New 40mph limit - watch out!
- C (10th Jul 2025 - 12:01:51)

I’ve just seen today that Portsmouth Road (old A3) is now 40mph all the way down to the dual carriageway approaching Rake.

It’s not at all well signposted so take care.

Hi,

Sounds like another money-spinner for EHDC, easy motoring targets.
No doubt there will be speed patrol vehicles around.
Also patrollers, with hand speed guns targeting.

It is amazing how a County Council that is always highlighting funding cuts, can install new speed limits and associated signage but won't fix the same roads they are responsible for.

And also have no consideration about slowing travel down for people who need to move around to earn their living.

If your urgent need can not be met, no matter, the new slower speed limits are all.

What is particularly annoying about this new speed limit is the road has been a National Speed Limit for decades, so we now have vehicles that stop more effectively and are safer around corners; and yet money is being spent on slowing light traffic.

We will likely see some Police enforcement/education over the next few weeks, and then it will be yet another road with a new speed limit that has not been re-engineered to slow the traffic down, other than putting up a sign.

As taxpayers we are paying for this, but rarely get fully consulted!

Think that’s in west Sussex there’s a sign just after the railway bridge.

The new 40mph starts about 100m inside Hampshire, it seems. But main section is in West Sussex 👍

Richard,
Yes we do have vehicles that stop more affectively and corner safely. Unfortunately we have many drivers whose interpretation of the national speed limit is foot to the floor, and any other speed limits are there to be exceeded.

Was there a public consultation before the speed limit was changed?

Will stand corrected, but my understanding is that statutory bodies and the public are usually consulted as part of the legal process to create or amend a TRO?

I imagine it was at the request of the local council of the area which is probably West Sussex they would have put out the consultation only for the immediate area not everywhere else as well.

I agree Jon. I went on a Speed Awareness Course many years ago and found it most interesting and informative. I learnt a lot and one of the things that has stuck in my mind was the gentleman running the course said that the setting of speed limits is reactive not proactive and speed limits are in place or changed because of incidents that occur and accidents.
