A plea to dog owners
- C (17th Mar 2022 - 10:51:26)

As the weather gets warmer and brighter, more dogs are being left in gardens - (fair enough!) But please don't leave your dog barking incessantly for ages. It's really triggering and disruptive, especially when working from home. All dogs bark, but when it goes on for an extended period of time it's a real noise nuisance. Thank you.

- AF (17th Mar 2022 - 20:56:13)

If it's disturbing your working from home perhaps you could return to the office, and be part of getting our city economies back on track.

- C (18th Mar 2022 - 06:50:02)

Thanks AF. I actually do work from the office three days per week so once again, a thoughtless and inaccurate comment made. Do you realise that many companies aren’t allowing workers back in the office five days per week, including mine? And your unhelpful point is unrelated to my original comment.

Many noisy things disturb my peace when the weather gets better, noise from parties, noisy children playing outdoors all day etc, children practising music with windows open, chainsaws, shredders etc. I have found though that if I speak to the householder concerned they usually do something about being more considerate. Alternatively, buy a house where it is not so built up. Also a dog which has a constant bark needs attention and possibly a long walk. Perhaps you could volunteer to help.

Re: A plea to dog owners

I couldn't agree more Joe except for two things:

- I cannot identify the location of this/ these dog(s) as the sound carries a long distance.
- Volunteering to help whilst holding down two jobs and a sick loved one to care for isn't viable. Plus, why do they have a dog if they don't care for it? I don't have a dog as I recognise I don't have the time or resource for it.
- The suggestion to buy a house in a 'less built up area' is unhelpful for numerous reasons I could list, including budget for one and the fact that dogs also bark in rural areas! D

My original comment was polite and reasonable. I used to have a dog and we ensured she was never left barking for more than a few seconds.

C-your original comment is entirely reasonable. Dogs barking for long periods is irritating, because of the noise and because the dog isn't being properly looked after-they don't bark because they're happy, do they? We have dogs and realise that making sure they aren't a nuisance is part of the responsibility that comes with having them.

I agree with C. Leaving a dog to bark all day is not on. Firstly, it's very inconsiderate of the needs of occupants of neighbouring properties and secondly, it's rather unkind to the dog, who probably barks out of distress at being left alone for so long.

It beats me why some people choose to become the guardian of a dog when they have no time to properly care for it. Dogs need company 24/7. If you can't provide that, then don't have one. Get a cat instead: they're much more self-sufficient than dogs.

Completely agree with C. A dog that barks constantly is not a happy dog. As C says all dogs bark from time to time ie when someone comes to the door etc, etc. We too have a dog and never let him bark for longer than half a minute. AF and D as usual are most unhelpful in their comments. Unless you have millions to spend (most of us do not) which would enable you to buy a house surrounded by acres of its own land you will always have and hear neighbours. Sound travels so it might not even be a near neighbour as it is in this case. In addition I think why people find that a dog constantly barking is disturbing is because it is not a happy sound. Unlike children playing in gardens or people having a good time which is part of everyday life. However D seems to find hearing people enjoying themselves and the noise associated with everyday activities disturbing. Perhpas he should buy a house with no neighbours and before he/she jumps in and says that he/she was talking about noise at unsociable hours I say consideration, consideration, consideration by all. It goes a long, long way to peaceful co-existence.

I can’t see any posts from D on this thread.

For some reason D's post was removed.

No posts have been removed from this thread. There hasn’t been a post by D here.

Oh well, I did try keeping out of trouble but people must be missing me. I experience all the noise issues mentioned here but they are not things that I would ever "speak to a neighbour about." I'm sure there are things I do that my neighbours would rather I didn't, but they leave me alone and I leave them alone. It's called getting on with people. Maybe the Liphook residents in the more affluent areas should be a bit more tolerant. It's not a perfect world and nor are any of our neighbours, no matter where you move to. If a barking dog is all you've got to worry about then you're doing very well.

Re: A plea to dog owners
- D (18th Mar 2022 - 21:25:14)

Are we sure that C's use of the letter D isn't a visualisation of a laughing mouth to indicate humour and not actually addressed to me at all?

We could be barking up the wrong tree here (oops!)

Penny Williamson, having carefully read through this post several times (something you should have done, perhaps) I think the derogatory comments you made against myself were actually pertaining to a post by JOE. Given that until the editors' intervention I had not contributed to this thread, I am at a loss as to why you made them against me. I am disappointed that you appear unable to acknowledge your error.

As you say, consideration, consideration, consideration.

D I misread the last sentence of Joe's post ending in D. Sincere apologies for my mistake.

Thankyou, Penny. That's most decent of you.
