Be careful, my son worked for them for a year turned out in all that time they never applied for a work permit for him. After highlighting this to the powers that be at the EHDC it seems this was not the first time. If your child is working without a work permit they are not insured.

Children 13 and over can work in some jobs including paper rounds. I am sure lots of children in Liphook have benefited from the experience of working for such a kind employer who is an asset to this village.

For parents who want practical advice if they are considering letting their children work in any type of paid employment, please read these two links. And then make sure you have given your consent and the paperwork is in order. Sometimes, people do slip up.

We had children's work permits when I was at school decades ago. If I remember our school sorted it out for us, I should imagine our parents could have. You don't have to wait for the employer to take the initiative.

Pete

I am surprised that you as a father did not check the regulations regarding your sons employment. Having been made aware of the regulations it would have been more appropiate to have brought this to the attention of Mr Patel rather than publishing it here

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Richard (13th Feb 2022 - 10:14:34)

Well, I have learned a new thing. Many, many years ago when I did a paper round, it was viewed as character building...no paperwork required...How times change :(

At least I have learned something new today!

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (14th Feb 2022 - 07:39:21)

Jaybee- I was well aware of the regulations thank you, my mistake was thinking that because my daughter had worked there and had a permit it was all taken care of. If it had just been my son then it could be put down to an error but when EHDC tell me it has happened to others you have to question their employment process.
Richard- My paper round was 37 years ago and we needed a work permit then so not exactly new.
D- It is the employers responsibility.
This may sound like a minor (excuse the pun) error but insurances would be invalid if anything untoward were to happen.

Such a shame that someone chose to post on here as a 'warning' to others.

My son did a paper round and worked in Gables for many years and he learned so much from Kash and Babs.

Pete's "tone" seems to be that of someone with a grudge or axe to grind. I'm sure there is probably a hidden agenda to this post?

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (14th Feb 2022 - 12:52:01)

Jane- "As a warning to others" very different tone to what I actually said "Be careful" as I said my daughter had worked there previous to this for a couple of years.
Ian- No real axe to grind and my tone was very neutral unlike the barrage of replies.
Just one question really for you all, what makes it ok for this business to break the law and others not. If something is not right then its not right no matter how nice the people may be.

Pete, daughter or son worked there!!!!

You don’t put it on here you go and see the employer and have a chat and sort it out. If he then still doesn’t do anything you go to the right authority and report it. Business in a small community have a hard enough time as it is with out unnecessary agro . We all make mistakes.

My goodness how times have changed. When I was about eight years old I worked on a farm driving tractors and working all sorts of machines it was about learning about life. It made you ready for work at 15 . The mind boggles you have to have insurance to be a paper boy I suppose that’s so you can blame someone else and claim compensation. I think we oldies had the best times.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- D (14th Feb 2022 - 16:16:28)

Thanks for the information, Pete. Presumably a young person doing what I used to do (mow a dozen elderly people's lawns once a week which took about an hour each) would have to obtain a work permit from each of those elderly persons?

- Ginny Stacpoole (14th Feb 2022 - 21:02:03)

What an interesting thread this is turning out to be; whoever would have thought that there was so much red tape and form filling for simply being a paper boy. I wonder from where it emanated?

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (15th Feb 2022 - 07:30:01)

Anne- If you read the thread properly its daughter and son.
To all -Whether you agree with the principal of work permits or not, if they are required by law then they are required.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (15th Feb 2022 - 09:34:15)

Hi D - I don't know about informal arrangements but I suspect not needed the difference being this is not informal. My son signed his contract and abided by their rules I would expect them to do the same regarding the rules of employing minors.

- passfield resident (15th Feb 2022 - 10:05:59)

Pete-you say in your first post "this was not the first time". How do you know this? If the council told you then they shouldn't have. The business you are criticising in public is run by really nice, caring people I have known for a very long time. You probably don't need to publicly air your grievance against them.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Richard (15th Feb 2022 - 10:20:16)

@Pete. I wish my paper round was only 37 years ago! LOL

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (15th Feb 2022 - 12:22:51)

Passfield resident- As I said in my earlier post EHDC gave me this info and why should they not have, surely its an important matter. I'm sure many people think they are lovely people I have no opinion "apart from when it comes to employment law" but right is right and wrong is wrong.
In my mind and the laws it makes no difference the size of the business. I work in a small business and have to abide by the same regulations as my much larger competitors.
The Irony of this is the more you keep replying the further up the page this thread goes.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Re (15th Feb 2022 - 13:38:13)

I think people are just wondering why you put this post on .You say you work in a small business if you’re employers made a mistake how would you feel if it was plastered all over the media. Your last post smack’s of I can do no wrong right is right wrong is wrong come on step into the real world. Many business make mistakes it’s the way of the world. But perhaps you are a staunch union man all out because of a mistake.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- BD (15th Feb 2022 - 14:10:54)

Pete - EHDC had no right to give you this information, if in fact they did so, as they are bound by numerous laws and regulations relating to "disclosure".

I am not surprised you are involved in a small business. If you spent less time concerning yourself with the running of other organisations you would have more time to develop your own.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (15th Feb 2022 - 16:35:58)

Re- hardly all over the media now is it and evidently it wasn't a mistake or certainly not an isolated one.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Pete (15th Feb 2022 - 16:38:16)

BD- Or maybe if I ignored the rules as well our business might be bigger unfortunately we trade within the law.

Re: Gables Newsagent Vacancies
- Dave (15th Feb 2022 - 16:45:50)

Pete, your contributions are coming across either as a jobs worth or an embittered individual looking to damage this business. Either way the good people of Liphook don't seem that much impressed!
