Smoke smell
- starman (26th Dec 2021 - 13:20:00)
Please stop smoke smells in this small town/village well at least not all day every day whether it's bonfires, heating, it's Christmas, can we have a break from it. I apologies if this is offensive.

You live in the countryside no offense but get over it.

Actually you read my mind. I live on a large village estate, the houses downhill all seem to have 'country living' woodburners, opening a window can quickly turn more toxic than living the M1. You have to do an area stove chimney smoke test first.
Then I read this:
theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/16/home-wood-burning-biggest-cause-particle-pollution-fires
'Just 8% of the population with woodburning stoves cause 3 times all the air pollution in Britain from all cars, vans, taxis, lorries together.' (and people are rightly, very very worried about traffic pollution!)
If you happen to live uphill of one you may as well live in Picaddily Circus, it could be up to 1000 times less polluted depending on the wind direction!
The worse is if people put the wrong woods in, often ones from their own gardens theyve left out and got wet:
'Tiny particle pollution is harmful to health as it can enter the bloodstream, be carried around the body and lodge in organs. The government is not planning a ban on wood burners but a ban on the retail sale of wet wood will come into force on 1 May, as will a ban on bags of house coal, the first such restrictions since the clean air acts of the 1950s. Wet wood has not been seasoned and produces higher levels of pollution.'
'..government statistics show that domestic wood burning in both closed stoves and open fires was responsible for 38% of all the pollution particles under 2.5 microns in size (PM2.5) in 2019'
(Quotation marks from Guardian Article.)
So don't dismiss it quite so casually, it may be lovely, I know people do it to save money and it's very cosy, I'd like one myself, I nearly did till I read the article ,so it should be discussed, if we can talk about traffic air pollution!
I'm now looking to buy something a little cleaner, like an articulated lorry.

er,
In that case why don't you talk to Damian Hinds about rising energy bills or making insulation for houses more affordable? That's of course if he cares, he's probably profitting out of it.

James, I could do, I'm sure he already knows, as for retro fitting wall insulation I think that whole industry is a bit of a cowboy land, it's one thing putting it into new builds, you can design it in and fit neatly with solid fibres, but retro pumping various products deep into questionably water proof older build cavities has caused untold misery for many people now plagued with interstitial damp. Another case of good intentions but poor leadership and training of fitters, where is the government guarantee to step in, rip open the walls and scoop it all out again if it goes wrong?
We could do with more of the greenest and overall cheapest power stations ever designed, nuclear, but the greens don't want them, they want us to leave our gas, coal and oil in the ground, build windmills that don't work if it's too windy (or not windy enough), solar units but we don't have (and don't want) enough sun. So we end up held over a barrel by the Middle East and Russia, no doubt the Americans will already be planning our role in the next geo political war, to keep the plebs from getting too cold!
Either way, I'm not prepared to glue myself to a motorway about it, like those idiots on TV!
Happy New Year, let's burn all our wood, the 21st Century can be like the 1800s again in so many ways! πππ

Just love the last two posters' responses.
One just wonders how our species and civilisation has survived so long without snowflakes and the woke lobby. Fortunately they've not been around too long and will hopefully mature and disappear in the not too distant future.

Something that many people don't realise is that the air pollution in their own home probably poses a far greater danger to their health than any that they will encounter outdoors.
We are all at risk from fumes and airborne particles in our homes - from cooking, cleaning, furnishings, air fresheners, perfumed toiletries and the like.
Here is an interesting article from BBC Future.
