Allianz site
- rolli (15th Nov 2021 - 14:44:26)
Considering the population increase in Liphook would it not be viable for a mini sports centre/swimming pool to be built on this site? It would fulfil the commercial use only covenant and would be a huge benefit to the village

Unless someone pays for it privately and runs it privately the local authority will never find it as they have just built the new leisure centre in Bordon.

Great idea. I wonder if there would be an appetite for a community funded/community owned centre? Crowdfunding can be powerful.
Ie buy shares etc

If the 500 houses that the Mills family are trying for at Highfield gets approved then maybe this should be a CIL cost for the benefit of Liphook

Rolli the CIL on 120 houses would not cover the cost of a swimming pool / leisure centre. There would have to be 10 times as many houses built to get a facility like that from CIL. Think the CIL is changing as well. The local authority would not help fund this when they have just built the Bordon facility. Also there is the Herons ? The option is also there to join old thorns or forest mere.

It would be lovely to have a pool and decent leisure centre in the heart of Liphook which us locals and our kids could walk, jog or cycle to. Sadly will never happen plus the Allianz site would be a little too small, what with parking needs and the new housing developments they've put on the land to the North and North West of the site already, apart from all the larger ones elsewhere, means there's probably not enough space. Where these amenities are built they like to do it as big regional centres with masses of parking so people can travel for miles to get there. Localism is very last century!
There lies the problem of Liphook, surrounded by the bigger towns of Petersfield, Haslemere and Bordon.
Petersfield is protected by the National Park.
Haslemere isprotected by wealth and tradition.
Bordon took the King's Shilling and had become a mega town, got all the funding for the next 20 years and all the new amenities.
Liphook, cynically one might say, lovely as it always has been is becoming just an overflow dormitory town with a motorway, a second class train station (hourly slow trains), the grand highlight of it all being a small to medium size Sainsburys (now minus fresh meat counter or cafe) plus across from it a Community Centre that puts on flower and jam shows and films from our youth and some other stuff, but not the swimming pool we were awarded by the council in exchange for Sainsbury's planning permission, to be funded by selling houses on the new Sainsbury's Estate, sound familiar, that was something like 30 years ago, the money was all spent elsewhere before the pool could be built, then it was deemed too costly!

Rolli - please can you elaborate on the 500 Highfield houses? Thought this site was not selected by EHDC

Presumably the Highfield site is Chichester/West Sussex and nothing to do with East Hants.

Re: Allianz site

There is a site being approved in the EHDC local plan called the Chiltley lane chicken farm. The design and other features are being looked at now. There was a proposal for 600 I think in the Highfield lane area but EHDc chose to build that sort of housing numbers in Alton instead, so the Liphook site is unlikely to go ahead as those sort of numbers fulfill the housing needs for the district. There is a National planning proposal to remove the requirement for local authorities to have a 5 year land supply.

Nice idea for the Allianz site but for the reason given it will not happen.
There is a lack of facilities in Liphook, just one sub standard supermarket, no butchers, poor level of railway services, lack of recreation facilities for young people.
The only way for this to change is to do a BORDON and have a massive house building frenzy. Think about it for one minute, when Bordon started all the house building and its still going on they now have a new relief road, a leisure center, a skate park, a shopping complex(The Shed), a new secondary school, a wildlife reserve and in the pipeline a new town centre with shops, a health center.
The fact is more population more facilities.

The facilities do not automatically happen, the labour government designated bordon as a growth town and the local. Authority were given 10 million pounds to make it an eco town. The EHDc councillors have been pro active in promoting bordon to developers, they get special deals on their Cils and permissions etc. Liphook is not a special case.

Can I suggest to AF that if they like Bordon so much that they move there? Some of us moved to Liphook because it's quiet and doesn't have loads of facilities. Tar.

- AF (18th Nov 2021 - 06:36:40)
Just to clarify my point I'm not suggesting we build loads of houses in Liphook it just won't happen, there will be the odd small development here and there, but nothing major.
That's fine but my point is that people on talkback often moan about the lack of facilities well you only have a chance of these if there is a large enough population to warrant it and in Liphook there isn't.
