Hedgehogs
- Gilly (7th Nov 2021 - 14:21:48)

Two dying juvenile hedgehogs within the last month on the junction of South and Midhurst Roads. So sad when they are struggling anyway. The first was found in a bad way with a horrible slashed leg. The second was confused by day then maybe got caught out with nowhere to go in the recent cold nights.

We are sure there is a correlation with strimming and leaf blowing around here in recent weeks.

Please please look carefully before indiscriminantly using your garden machines. Leave a few piles of leaves for the wildlife - less property maintenance AND you can feel good

Well said Gilly! Too much obsession with gardens looking sanitised to the point of sterile. For goodness sake remember the wildlife that our outdoor spaces are designed to accommodate and did so long before we came along with our destructive strimmers and leaf blowers. Oh and garden bonfires - they’re totally outdated along with those who continue to light them.

Gilly, so sad to hear about the young hedghogs, were they to far gone to help them? It’s good to highlight the problems our over tidying in the garden can cause to our wildlife. Many people don’t realise they could be harming the wildlife in their gardens. So many people have been brought up being told to cut back perennials and clear all the leaves in the autumn. Good to only tidy what is absolutely necessary, whilst having a gentle poke around to check your not upsetting anything. Then just enjoy watching the birds rummaging through the piles of leaves for food and eating the seed heads, and the stems and seed heads really look lovely on a frosty morning.

Hi Abbey. The first little hog had a badly sliced leg which, we assume, was probably inflicted by a strimmer. I took him down to the lovely people at Small World Vets, but there was nothing they could do by that time. I found the other two separately on the verge with no apparent injuries. I guess they were disturbed, but then got caught out by the couple of colder nights we had last week. Probably all from the same family, poor little things. Very sad to find them in such quick succession.

Hydestile Animal Rescue in Godalming are absolutely wonderful in caring for injured and debilitated animals. Those they can cure they release back into the wild and those who would never be able to lead an independent life, they give them a home for life. Lynn and Graham Cornick who run the centre are the most amazing people and they have great staff and veterinary support. Cannot recommend them highly enough. 01483 860313
