The Links too good for the locals??
- James (31st Oct 2021 - 12:39:50)

Out for a dog walk and fancied a quick drink amd some cheesy chips as needed a quick fill before roast at home later.
Sat outside and was told by (very polite) member of staff, that he could Do chips but not cheesy chips, this is because the company does not want to go in this direction.
Not sure what that means !

However when I asked for these at the Deers Hut 5 minuets after leaving the links the reply was simple from the barman, do you you want it on fat chips or skinny fries!!
A proper local pub for local people l, The Links something to be learned here I think!!

Sorry to hear about your traumatic chip experience😂.

In my humble opinion:

The Deers Hut clientele is just very upmarket so they can afford to be as decadent as they like without ever worrying about being chavvy!

The Links customers however are just desperate to not to be seen to be chavvy, like what them lot in the Square are and on average they are probably more likely to live on the Berg!

The Anchor clientele are just very happy to be chavvy or whatever, they really couldn't care as long as it's cheap, cheerful and fun!

The Green Dragon clientele probably think they are on average a slightly better punter than those across the road and maybe they are, certainly you get a better class of cuisine here than in most!

The Prince of Wales is interesting, those who have been bothered to go that far are probably there for a book club or ale tasting treat, so are definitely a mixed bag of the more interesting among us😁

This is just my very light-hearted take on the good people of Liphook and may not meet with your own approval, so please don't get angry but feel free to enlighten me if you like!

I'm not here to venerate the food or service at the Links.

Commercial establishments are free to select their products and their clientele. Up to them what food they serve or not serve.

Please explain the 'local' connection in your posting? One's special request can be respected or rejected in Liphook just as well as anywhere else.

Are cheesy chips chavvy? Would they be okay if called Pommes Dauphinoise? Yes I know the latter have garlic and cream in them, but still spuds and cheese…

Joking aside, it’s really up to the chef/proprietor to serve what they please, surely?

Really? When you went "I'd like cheesy chips" the waiter told you that this "wasn't a direction the company wanted to go in"? Like he, a waiter for a Fuller's pub, was aware of the company's philosophical position on the placing of melted cheese over some fried potatoes and they'd taken such a strong position as to inform their wait staff that should a customer request an item such as cheesy chips, that the staff should push back most vociferously?

The waiter didn't just reply, like I imagine any waiter at any other restaurant would "we don't do cheesy chips".

Furthermore, how are cheesy chips a mark of class in either direction. I'm pretty sure you can't go down to McDonald's and go "hi yes, I'd like some fries, and can you slap a plastic slice on top, I'd really like to establish my cred as a commoner with some unmeltable American cheese caked on top of my French fries"

From the menu choices it does not appear that they do “hot bar snacks’ they seem to be more of a dining pub. I expect that having ‘ cheesy chips’ on the menu would encourage people not to have a full meal there. I have been there and had a bowl of nuts or bag of crisps with a drink, have not had a meal there for a while.
Whether some one is local or not is not relevant to what is on their menu? If you want that sort of thing go to the Anchor.

Your poor dog must be exhausted if you walked from the Links to the Deers Hut in 5 minutes!

"Establish my cred as a commoner" ???

We had a very poor evening meal there a couple of weeks ago. Supposedly triple cooked chips were more like soggy oven chips, no mashed potato, no steaks. Tempura batter was ordinary batter. Far too many olives in a salmon dish completely overwhelmed the taste of the fish.

They had a big sign outside the door advertising for a chef so should have seen this warning!

@Steve that's exactly what I thought too when I read the original post! I've done that walk many times - and it's a 20-minute walk at a brisk pace!
