Police car sighting Paddock Way
- Reginald Hollis (17th Sep 2021 - 20:22:49)

Wow just saw a police car! First time many years! Driving up and down Paddock Way and Weylands Close looking for the crims. One of the original coloured cars without all that rainbow nonsense.
Good at least to see a presence given all the council tax we pay them.

"One of the original coloured cars without all that rainbow nonsense" what exactly do you mean by that?

James, I guess this ….

I was more asking why they think it is ridiculous, is hate crime something not to be recognised and faught?

Probably made a wrong turn, and was lost!

Re: Police car sighting Paddock Way

The question then is 'would it be ok if they had a picture of Jesus carrying his cross?', I can imagine the outrage that would emanate that the police are going to protect Christians more and (as presumably the point is) people won't report crimes to the police unless they can prove to them personally that they support their own beliefs and that feeds neatly into the whole concept of 'if you don't look or sound like me I don't trust you' which I've often felt is an overlooked form of reverse discrimination wrapped up as victimisation, so then surely the point is, police, if nothing else, should try to look as impartial and above politics or sides of any kind in this turmoil of insecurity we are all going through. Funnily enough something they've tried to do for over 100 years and only recently they are being questioned by people who demand they show particular support to their causes, because otherwise they won't report crimes, what is that all about?

I'd say the biggest reason people don't report crimes is because they don't believe anything at all will be done about it so, as a Druid I'll never report anything again till they prove they support me, come on now I want a car too!

Re: Police car sighting Paddock Way
- James (18th Sep 2021 - 16:47:26)

er,

The idea is that people will report hate crimes more. A lot of LGBT+ people have been discriminated against even by the police, it was only a few months ago a police branch in Basingstoke was investigated and found guilty (i believe) of discrimination.

A lot of organisations have said that hate crime inc LGBT+ hate crime is under reported because of the lack of interest and respect by the police.

You mention, Christianity one of the least discriminated religious groups in England and Wales. So, that claim should be thrown out the window.

I am surprised that the Editor has allowed such blatant homophobia from the OP by calling the pride flag "ridiculous". What does that do to help improve our community? Nothing.

I see humans but no humanity.

Stop knocking the decision to paint them. My mate’s company makes a shed load money from applying these graphics. It might cost the tax payer and divert budget money away from some real policing. But it obviously keeps the Wokes of little Liphook happy, Thumbs up Jimmy young man well said.

- Joe (18th Sep 2021 - 22:53:16)

ER, I did not understand your references to Jesus and the cross in this context. My understanding is that it is so people will have confidence to report hate crimes if they think the police will take it seriously. What has it to do with Christianity?

Re: Police car sighting Paddock Way
- William Oddy (19th Sep 2021 - 11:04:32)

Firstly people rainbows are a universal symbol of hope which have been used for hundreds of years. No one owns the rights to a rainbow.
For example, the NHS have been using it during the pandemic.
Secondly why has this thread gone off on a tangent? The main issue here is why a police car was present. Something I agree is very unusual even in this, let’s say, slightly rougher part of this fine village.

Re: Police car sighting Paddock Way
- er (19th Sep 2021 - 13:57:23)

William, the OP referred to rainbow 🌈 cars and used the descriptive word nonsense.

Thanks for your question Joe, but my reference I thought was obvious. Do we believe Christians can't be victims of hate crime? Religion is protected by the same laws, obviously we know about antisemitism and Islamophobia etc, but did you know more Christians are abused for their beliefs than any other group, mainly due to their belief system requiring them to proselytise as instructed by their Messiah. This is their lawful, protected right and yet it seems anyone and everyone feels free to mock and ridicule them.

James mentioned use of the word 'ridiculous' herein to be homophobic, although did you mean 'nonsense', either way, that is itself ridiculous, adjectives can be criminal or hateful, but not when part of a civil debate about an issue of public interest, at least I hope not, god forbid, or should I say 'ones personal moral choices' forbid (or even 'The State' forbid)!

But let's imagine for one moment that we have become such an intolerant society that opinion beyond a strict pc edict becomes a crime, which to many seems to be the way we're heading step by step, then there will inevitably be a mad rush by influence groups to ensure their opinions are the protected ones, while others are proscribed and the result is further polarisation, hence my statement that the police, of all people, should be and be seen to be, completely impartial.

Hence if police cars have rainbows and presumably there will be others for BLM etc, then would they be able to have Jesus or say Mohammed, maybe Krishna or Moses perhaps? Would there not then, maybe be a righteous backlash by the very people who now object to anyone questioning the current images?

James, I don't doubt that some police have been dismissive of some crimes over the years, in fact most people feel the police have been dismissive of their personal concerns, from homeowners, farmers to women to LGBT to religious groups etc they all feel they aren't getting the service they need, except maybe the very rich who are😁, the police are simply overwhelmed and fighting a tide of beaurocracy and self interest groups, it's been proven time and again that if any group organises and seeks out examples of poor attitudes to them, they will find examples, even if they have to trawl Facebook going back 10 years, the fight in this country against homophobia has been necessary, but that's not the debate here at all, it's about a car advert!

If we are seriously saying that someone who is attacked will not report it to the police because they don't see a car with their beliefs on, then they have a problem, but if it's because they don't believe the crime will be dealt with seriously or effectively, then no amount of expensive advertising or slogans will solve the problems (a little research suggests car wraps can cost thousands of pounds per car livery, then there is the cost of artwork etc on top, is it even money well spent?)

Most of us who have lived in bigger towns and cities know from experience that you don't bother reporting every insult, drunken threat or even in many cases, muggings or burglaries, because you spend hours waiting to fill in a report and nothing at all often happens. But if you are attacked you will, you would n't need a livery with someone 'like you' on the door, or would you? Well I wouldn't, so whose being inclusive or exclusive?

How is this different for any of us, in fact if the sort of crime they are encouraging us to report is things like name calling or ridiculing, then Joe, social media is full of anti Christian mockery and comments like 'keep your views to yourself we don't want to hear about your imaginary friend' are prevalent, intolerance and bullying are simply reversed from the mockery and abuse of one group to another and soon we'll all need our own policing services, in parts of London such things are already running and groups are closing off from one another, not uniting in one giant belief (our belief of course!) as we might have hoped!

Hence I asked should the police be wrapping their cars in flags of special interest groups and if so, is it inclusive or divisive, when maybe they'd be better trying to solve actual problems and install real confidence in everyone, irrespective of what group we identify as, because today we might be happy if it's our group they're showing, but tomorrow they could, just maybe, be promoting Jesus😂😂😂

I think you will find ER that the legal definition in this country of is very specific, mocking religion does not get covered by that.
It is not so easy to "turn the other cheek" if there is Physical abuse. Racial abuse and insults would be covered as would incitement to violence.

Re: Police car sighting Paddock Way
- er (19th Sep 2021 - 16:40:48)

Joe, I think you'll find the same law applies to religious hatred as to sexual orientation, I'm no lawyer but the laws on this are set by Parliament in the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 which was updated from the 86 Act to include religious hatred against all and no religions (ie atheists are protected equally by the Act) whereas in the past only Jews and Sikhs were protected on religious/ethnic/tribal exceptions.

Incidentally the Act was brought about mainly by Muslim groups sick of being mocked and attacked, not by Christians who as you rightly point out, largely turn the other cheek or just couldn't give a damn.

Incidentally this Act was vigorously opposed by many comedians furious at the prospect of losing the right to mock and ridicule Christians and Muslims, they pestered and lobbied until the House of Lords allowed (against the will of Parliament) an amendment to include the words 'if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred', although this would not include Judaism or Sikhism, which are still protected by virtue of other protected characteristics!

As you can see, the law is a complete mess and is written largely based upon who shouts the loudest, in short religious people are protected and allowed to believe homosexuality is a sin, but they cannot discriminate, society may mock Christians and Muslims up to a point, if not done out of hatred but none may discriminate against each other😂😂😂

Anyway, it still drifts away from the car point!
