Smoke at night
- Paul (7th Sep 2021 - 08:01:56)

A number of nights in recent weeks there is clearly smoke blowing across Liphook at night. Someone is likely burning material at night - not garden waste, more general waste.

It seems to be coming from an area near to / south of the railway line, from Portsmouth Road through Devils Lane.

It smells of inorganic material - general rubbish. The fact that it’s being burnt at night may mean someone is collecting rubbish during the day (is it their job?), or needs to burn it under the cover of darkness for some reason,

It has happened a lot over recent months, and I think it’s time for a chat with EHDC to see if the cause can be identified. However, if anyone has any info they can share (dates, times, general location) it would be great to know?

Again, this is not about occasional burning of garden waste, this is most likely commercial waste and someone needing to regularly dispose of it at night.

We’re Haslemere Road and it was horrendous last night. From early evening and right through the night the house was filled with the smell of smoke. I’d assumed it wasn’t one individual as it was going on for so long and thought maybe it was stubble burning on fields somewhere but maybe you’re right and it is someone up to no good. Whatever it is it was awful especially with all the windows open after such a beautiful day.

And .... early evening, and a good amount of smoke now starting again. Definitely coming from the southern area, and as there's nothing burning near where I am it means it probably is a good sized fire around half a mile to a mile away.

Wonder if this will go all night as before? It's the fact that someone needs to burn regularly at night that's suspicious.

There has been a lot of night time resurfacing work going on this side of Petersfield on the old A3 the past few weeks which is to the south of us with a southerly wind, maybe it's that. I live in the area mentioned and I've not smelt anything.
