SW trains consultation
- Worried of liphook (22nd Aug 2021 - 10:52:37)

Morning folks. Talking to the guy on duty in the station today. he said SW trains is looking to move to a Sunday service from liphook at some point in 2022.

Forgive me if this is old news on here - but this was news to me. This seems like quite a bad thing for liphook - a growing community, whose roads are already very stressed. It will just throw more cars onto the road.

Is it worth submitting views about this? Or is this just going to be a waste of time? If indeed Covid has brought SWT to its knees - which seemed to be what this chap in the station was saying.

Thanks

I have spoken to SW Trains and there is NO consultation in progress and NO plans to downgrade the service at Liphook.

Of course there have been problems in some areas of the network with people isolating and they have had to cancel trains in the Salisbury area, but not in Liphook. Also this problem should now ease as double jabbed people no longer need to isolate.

The service is reviewed once a year and there are occasionally minor changes to the trains, but nothing major.

Also it should be noted the train service has been quietly re-nationalized. The franchise holder now receives a set fee to run the trains and gets the same amount of money regardless of how many people travel, and all ticket revenue goes to the government. Of course it is a loss making service.

On a separate note the massive bridge nearing completion is looking very nice but i've been told the lifts will only be on when the station is manned, so any disabled people coming home from London late at night could be stuck on Platform 2 all night. A ramp would have been a better idea.

AF there is definitely a consultation, but seems to be for Dec 2022 changes.

Seen on Haslemere FB page.

Alan

My apologies, you were right, I phoned SW Trains Customer services who assured me there was no consultation.

I have read through the document and if there proposals go ahead we will be down to one train per hour which in essence is a Sunday service.

We can travel to Haslemere but even the services there are being reduced.

It all comes down to the details of when these Trains run.

It's very sad that COVID and the overreaction to it by government, media and most people has caused so much disruption and problems to so many people.

AF I do know a lot of former office workers who are now working permanently from home. Why should they run empty trains? perhaps when the government ends financial support for workers things might alter back again but do not spread again that COVID is not dangerous, it is still spreading amongst younger people who have not been vaccinated.

Reminder: consultation ends 19 September 2021.

Re: SW trains consultation
- AF (23rd Aug 2021 - 21:56:22)

The issue is that SW Trains believe that the amount of people using the trains will be significantly lower than in pre covid times. I'm not sure how they can predict this as the new measures will start in December 2022 which is 16 months away.

Now as someone who has been travelling on the trains throughout the pandemic the trains are starting to get busier, I agree still not up to pre-covid times I will admit, but as the offices get rid of the safe covid practices which are basically less desks in the office more people will return.

A lot of companies want their people back in the offices even if the staff prefer to be at home. The trains are safe I have been fine on them and I don't wear a mask anymore, I only used the mask when it was law.

Of course covid is spreading amongst younger people, probably because they aren't taking up the vaccine. I'm no genius but even I can see the solution. Personally I think the vaccine should be compulsory except for medical reasons. It's everyone's civic duty and responsibility. Those who refuse it will expect the NHS to drop everything to treat them when they catch it.

Sounds like the consultation they were due to have a year or so ago. If I remember the proposal was that Haslemere would be a hub so to get to London you'd need to change at Haslemere for a fast train.

AF you are mistaken with the lifts, I believe they are going to be on 24/7. Look at Godalming, that station isn’t staffed 24/7 and the lifts are still on full time so why would Liphook be any different?

D.
You sound like a typical Daily Mail reader. How on earth can you say that any medical intervention should be compulsory. That is just ridiculous.
Everyone should have the freedom of choice. The vaccine does not stop it being spread, that’s well known. So it only protects those that have it. It doesn’t stop them passing it on.
In a nut shell if someone doesn’t have it then it’s only affecting them and no one else and that’s a risk they are entitled to take.
This isn’t North Korea. At least not quite yet.

Definitely would want the government or anyone else forcing me to have something injected into my own body

Re: SW trains consultation
- D (6th Sep 2021 - 20:40:14)

FO, I do not believe people are entitled to risk inflicting themselves with a potentially lethal disease which could be avoided had they had a simple vaccine. The fact that the vast majority of people in hospital with covid have not been vaccinated speaks volumes.

If my views are reminiscent of the Daily Mail then yours can be compared to Little Britain.

Re: SW trains consultation
- FO (6th Sep 2021 - 22:50:23)

D
Based on what you have just said then, I think what you are saying is that smoking, drinking alcohol , eating / drinking sugary items etc etc should also be banned as they cause self inflicted illness which cost the NHS millions every year because of, what you would describe, as people being selfish.
As I said earlier. It’s not quite North Korea yet but keep trying. You’ll get there 👍😁

Re: SW trains consultation
- D (7th Sep 2021 - 07:34:40)

FO, my conscience is clear in that by having the vaccine I have done my bit in reducing the spread of this disease. In having the vaccine I may even be saving other people's lives. I think that my right to refuse the vaccine pales into insignificance when one thinks of the benefits for the whole community, not just oneself. Sadly a quality in decline in our selfish self obsessed society. Maybe you're too young to remember the parents refusing to have their children vaccinated against meningitis only to watch their children die of the disease ten years later. As you say, carry on, you'll get there.
