River Wey is grey
- KennyB (27th May 2021 - 14:40:42)

Not sure what has happened to the River Wey. It seems to be cloudy grey water today through Radford Park area. I wouldn't let my dog swim in that for all we know it could be sewerage from somewhere. Anybody know what has happened?

In a past event of effluent polluting the Wey, we contacted the River Wey Trust, the matter seemed of little interest for them. Neither do they seem to show interest in local volunteers (not even a courteous 'no thanks').
See TV BBC News this afternoon.
We know that all publicly funded services that aren't electorally lucrative have suffered badly since the 2008 crisis. Why should we expect river water quality to be any different?
A chronic lack of funding had placed the UK at a very shameful place on the European river cleanliness charts.
Privatise the river authorities? Sounds like jumping from the pan into the fire.

It would be good if you would expand on why you think the Rwt turned you away from volunteering?

The correct Authority to report pollution is the Environment Agency who are responsible for water courses.

Bush

We note your comments on Talkback regarding our alleged lack of interest about pollution on the River Wey.

We are always interested in these events which are of great concern to our Charitable Trust; which is run by volunteers.

The Environment Agency is responsible for monitoring pollution on the river system and if we are aware of any instances of pollution we always contact them to let them know of the problem. However it is also the responsibility of members of the public to contact them direct if they notice any problem. gov.uk/report-an-environmental-incident

If you could provide the dates that you reported any pollution events to The River Wey Trust we will check our records to ascertain what action was taken.

We are always looking for volunteers and cannot understand your comments about our lack of interest.

In this regard we refer you to our web site riverweytrust.org.uk where you will see that we have listed dates and locations for the next local activities where volunteers would be most welcome.

We would like to invite you to join the River Wey Trust and look forward to working with you.

The report of suspect pollution we attempted was pre 2012, we have no further details.
Filling in forms on the website offering our volunteer help went unacknowledged. To us that indicated lack of interest, something might have gone wrong.
Indeed, our experience may well be out-of-date, let's hope things improved since.
