Scam
- Mrs M (28th Dec 2020 - 22:52:28)

Beware! I had an email today apparently from Amazon saying that my Prime membership was due but “unfortunately” the credit card which I used for payment in the past had expired and I should click on the button and give details of my current card. I’m told that to “prevent interruption of benefits” they will try other cards associated with my account. Firstly, my membership is not due when they say and secondly, my card will not be out of date for some time. So good luck scammers !

It’s worth mentioning that they also use the phone. My mother has received a few calls over the last month to say there’s a problem with her account. After the recorded message ends you’re put through to a foreign call centre. Amazon will NEVER call or email you directly with a link for you to click. If there is a problem with your account they will ask you to log on to your Amazon account and resolve any problems through your “My Account” settings.

We had lots of calls purporting to be from Amazon, several times a day.

After I while, I stopped just putting the phone down on them and actually spoke to a person, ignoring their script and telling them I knew it was a scam and they were committing a crime in calling me. Same with those saying they have detected a Windows fault, broadband issue etc.

Funnily enough, no more calls since!

Look for the mis-spelling of Amazon on any so called E Mails.

C I will try that. Normally I put the phone down immediately and then block the number.

Plenty of scams are active currently. I've seen scams from BT (re-enter credit card details or your account will be cancelled), Amazon, DPD (enter credit card details for a refund on delivery), DVLA ....

Appreciate many people are wary, so 2 quick points to help others who may not know. Firstly, if you are not actually expecting an email asking for details then assume it's risky and start from the viewpoint that it's a scam. Secondly, sometimes you can select / reply to the email and see what email address you are replying to. For example, the 'DPD Accounts' title might become something random (e.g. Dave31544454@onmail.rs) again suggesting it's fake.

Always be wary!
