SAINSBURY`S
- Ann (10th Dec 2020 - 09:51:09)
Here`s hoping that Sainsbury`s in Liphook will be closed on Boxing Day. Family time is so important.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- non church goer (10th Dec 2020 - 14:51:45)
Don't take this wrong, but I think Boxing Day is not technically a family day, I think it was a day for Christians to do charity or something, for the majority of non practicing Christians (I think that's most Christians) and others it's not a holy day at all, or at least not in practice, why should the rest of us be unable to buy food, we don't shut down for Ramadan or Vesak or Hanukah or Holi or Diwali or Geeta Jayanti or Ostara or Beltane or a thousand others, in fact most of us probably no longer celebrate the claimed Abrahamic God's human birth at all in practice, the whole thing about Christmas has just mainly become a shopping festival in recent times anyway, so let's stick to celebrating our shopping and flashy lights and hope we can get out of our houses and mingle by then, as for genuinely practicing Christian families I believe they SHOULD be given the day off if they want it, but at double pay it's a tough sell (maybe an exemption letter from their priest could suffice)!!

Non church goer.
As a member of staff, I can assure you we DONT get double pay. Unfortunately that’s a thing of the past.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- Dave (10th Dec 2020 - 22:08:21)
As a non religious person, I disagree with completely with the attitude of it being about shopping and flashing lights.
To me, it's about actually getting some time off work and spending time with my family and making time to do more with them than I would normally be able to.
We are all different and each to their own, but just because I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons, does not mean it's not the part of the year I value most. No other time is it likely so many of my friends and family will be able to take time out and catch up with each other. And to be clear, that is both family inside the home and out.

I think generally the Christmas period is too prolonged BUT I also think supermarkets and retail do not need to be open on Boxing Day, especially this year. A lot of industries close down from Christmas Eve until beginning of January so I think 2 days off is not too much to to ask for Supermarket staff

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- AF (11th Dec 2020 - 15:18:42)
Lets all remember Christmas is not really a Christian festival for the following reasons.
1 - Jesus(If he existed) was not born on 25 December.
2 - Christmas is NOT in the bible.
3 - It is originally a pagan festivals that was hijacked by the Christians to increase their followers.
Lets face it the only Christian thing about Christmas is the name.

All supermarket staff should have Boxing Day off this year for family time as suggested by the original poster.

This Thread is typical of some many Threads on this site that move completely away from the point which is giving the staff at Sainsburys the day off on Boxing Day. Thank goodness David Lush has the sense to start another Thread under SAINSBURYS and hopefully this will not get hijacked.

You will notice, Penny, that some of us have tried to stick to the original thread.

Boxing Day for me is a day to relax, having entertained the family on Christmas Day. It is a quiet day of eating and drinking and not having to leave the house. It is not necessary to go shopping after one day of closure. Sainsbury’s should stay shut. Waitrose has never opened on Boxing Day.

Lets hope they are open as I need to to buy my yellow bananas :

Adrian
You should be a sensible fellow as you have the same name as me, and it's obvious that you will not be able to buy Yellow Bannannas as Sainsburys don't sell them.

I was I there yesterday and every one was yellow and bendy. We also need more green ones as they keep longer in the sock draw.

What is this 'sock draw' of which you speak?
Are you referring to the ancient Liphook version pistols at dawn??

Why do people divert from the original thread - they need to get a life - sick and tired of reading about bananas in Sainsbury`s.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- Knowledge (17th Dec 2020 - 10:47:59)
Apologies, liz, as I know I am diverting from the original intent of this thread.
We saw back in April and May how pollution levels fell during lockdown. You could actually see and taste the difference in the air.
We are now back to exactly where we were before the pandemic and pollution levels are on the rise again.
So, we've learned NOTHING! Nobody needs to go shopping every day, many of us survived perfectly well during lockdown by shopping once a week or even less. I'm guilty of this too, I shopped much more efficiently in lockdown when I had to consider the frequency of trips.
So, why can't we go back to the good old days when most shops were shut on a Sunday? Give both the shop workers AND the environment a day off once a week, every week.

Dream on Knowledge - your utopian vision of England has long gone. No returning to the way things were "back in the day" we need to look forward. The world will increasingly be 24/7, 365 days a year and that is not going to change. Hopefully awareness of innovation though will save the planet for our grandchildren and beyond

Re: SAINSBURY`S

Oh, don't I know it Rolli. My question was a frustratingly rhetorical one. I agree, it'll never happen. Doesn't mean it isn't an eminently sensible and easily achievable suggestion though.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- H (17th Dec 2020 - 13:24:48)
Dear Knowledge
Many of us didn't do very well during the first lockdown actually. We survived on the "Boris Boxes" because everyone panic bought online and used all the delivery slots that were meant for the Clinically vulnerable who were advised to shield.
The contents of the boxes included manky fruit and veg, long life milk, fray bentos pies, 1 loo roll, sachets ot tea coffee and sugar, soup and corned beef ,1 tiny guest soap to wash ur hands. Not one person or neighbour asked if I needed any shopping and back then the buddy system wasn't in place.
That's what we ate for 4 months.
Glad you coped well, perhaps people could look out for those who are chronically sick and stuck indoors.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- Knowledge (17th Dec 2020 - 13:59:01)
Thanks H.
Apart from the fact that you're missing the point of my original post which was to do with saving the environment largely, we did just that, collecting shopping for elderly relatives and people we knew who were isolating. I'm sorry that nobody helped you out.

Very sorry to hear your story. Presumably you have no friends or family who could help?

- S (18th Dec 2020 - 08:51:52)
Dear H, sorry to hear about your experience of shielding. Have you heard about the Liphook Help Hub? All the details you need are on these pages. They assigned me to a vulnerable family during the first lockdown and I did their food shopping, collected prescriptions etc. That’s a shame none of your neighbours checked you were ok but there is help out there and some kind people too!

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- RE (18th Dec 2020 - 10:38:50)
H sorry to hear your plight but you have the use of the internet so why didn’t you put your problems on talk back.
Liphook has some wonderful groups that help out. Community Laundry collect and deliver for one, Parish and District Council have special departments so there is help out there.
As for your Boris box several people in the Village had them and were very impressed with the goods, you must have had a bad one. A relative in Norfolk received theirs and was very impressed with the contents. Please don’t suffer there are a lot of good people out there to help.

Re: SAINSBURY`S
- Rachel (18th Dec 2020 - 19:03:46)
Just to say, I too was shielding being in the top most vulnerable group.
The local council ring me often, asking if they can help in any way, shopping for me if needed, collecting prescriptions or just having a chat!
If you are one of the most vulnerable and shielding, the council will help.
The boxes were not great but helpful at a difficult time.
