Pot Holes
- Mark (22nd Aug 2020 13:51:43)
I hate to raise this subject BUT...
I have never seen so many potholes on the Haslemere road, once you leave the village. Good news - many seem to have chalk markings to indicate they may be filled in again soon.
However there a couple that can do real damage and they all seem to reappear in the usual places every month or so with rain and less clement weather.
We use the road a lot and so do lots of lorries and heavier vehicles, which I guess combined with cold weather and water cause the road to disintegrate quite rapidly.
Is anyone an expert on roads - are we forever doomed to this or could the three councils responsible be persuaded to resurface with a really strong covering - like the A roads which rarely seem to get pot holes.
I appreciate this may be impossible or cost prohibitive but I just think it probably gets more traffic than most roads of a similar nature. Once you get into Hammer and Haslemere it is even worse with large parts of the road almost completely destroyed each year - especially when water flows down the hills.
Would be interested to hear what people think.

I agree it's a horrendous road from liphook right up until the old rex cinema, anyone under 40 won't have a clue where that is.
The problem is it covers 3 different councils and it's on the edge of their areas, getting 3 councils to work on a project together, i think the expression is "It's like herding cats".

You could try the conventional low rate of success methods of reporting a pothole, best of luck with that.
I have heard stories of councils rushing out to fill-in potholes when someone is reporting an accident with insurance claims against the council - even before the injured party have pressed charges. The council were keen to eliminate evidence prior to investigations.
If you or your vehicle get damaged due to poorly maintained roads, do not forget to keep a photograph of the offending element (pothole, obscured view etc) BEFORE you leave the scene. Get your insurers involved; would your travel insurance cover that?

Having just driven approx 2000 miles in the EU a few months ago the major surprise is the level of noise and poor quality of the roads as soon as I returned, it took a few weeks of driving elsewhere and that return for me to really notice that our roads are awful.

If you use FixMyStreet, it seems to get the council to move faster as the report becomes public, and they can't say they didn't know!

That stretch was resurfaced (properly) about 15 years ago. I think a new rain gully was installed near Highfield Lane about 7 ish years back; presumably to prevent standing water.
But pothole repair is of a poor standard around here. Just throwing some tarmac in the hole is a very temporary fix; it just starts to grow again around the patch, or the patch itself crumbles.
But officially it's been 'repaired'.....
