Traffic, local station and Commute to London
- Emma (9th Jul 2020 18:25:20)
Hi everyone!
Me and my husband are looking at moving to Liphook as it sounds absolutely amazing :)
We both work in London so wanted to ask what the parking is like at and around the station -is it easy to get parking spaces between 6:45-7:30 am? We are looking at the 07:19 train to Waterloo and wanted to ask if those who currently get this train if there are plenty of seats and how the commute is as we aren't used to a commute longer than 45 minutes.
Thanks x

You will find there is lots of space at those times, both in car park (when no engineering works) and in the train - towards the rear where you will be able to sit side by side.
However, depending where you drive from you may prefer to go to haslemere which has a higher frequency of trains.

As the other person said you will be able to get seats and can park in the station car park.
The commute from Liphook is around 1hr 10 mins. Be aware the SWR are attempting very successfully to be the worst rail franchise in the country. So far pre-covid they had become the worst franchise that ran trains into London, they have managed to turn one of the most profitable franchises into a loss making service and are re-negotiating their franchise deal.
There are more trains from Haslemere but to park you need to buy a yearly season ticket to get a yearly parking ticket and have to join a waiting list.

The commute from Liphook is about an hour or just over, depending on which train you catch of course. In the evening allow time to get to your train at least 5 minutes before it leaves to get a seat. There may be more people working from home for several days a week post Covid though.

I used to catch the 7.19 or the 7.28 train before lockdown. The 7.19 always had plenty of seats but these are more squashed together with less elbow room. But never an issue finding seats. The 7.28 is much more comfortable however with larger seats - fewer spaces however, but still I never had a problem finding a seat. Lots of people prefer to wait for the 7.28 for comfort.
I would always allow 10 mins to be sure of getting a seat before departure at Waterloo however.
Lots of cycle racks too at Liphook station by the way.

I used to commute on a daily basis. It was fine when everything ran on time, and you'd mostly get a seat on the train in the morning, bit more difficult coming back, but then the train is generally half empty after Guildford. I mostly used to take my little 125cc motorcycle to Haslemere, it gained me an extra 20 minutes in bed in the morning, free to park at the station and the cost of fuel, maintenance etc is negligible. After a while I just gave up on the trains and commuted all the way in to London by bike. It was easier, cheaper and quicker... Buy some decent gear and it isn't cold or wet, you can always do the train thing through the worst of the winter weather if you can't face it, but most of the year it's fine. The permanent, every morning, traffic jam at Guildford isn't a problem on a bike either :-)

I don’t recommend moving here purely because the train service is awful. SWR are a nightmare. I’ve been commuting for 11 years and I must be the only person in lockdown who’s life has improved since not having to travel on their stinking, filthy delayed and 3 days out of 5 in each direction often cancelled trains.
Liphook is lovely though!
