Bumble bee nest
- Allan Ireland (22nd Jun 2020 19:21:53)

I have discovered a bumble bee nest in my garden.
No children in house. Is there any risk ? Any ideas what to do ?
I would welcome any comments or ideas.

Absolutely harmless so long as you don't annoy them. They'll move on when they're ready. Be happy that they chose your garden.

We had one in our garden two years ago. Used to sit within feet of it and watch them all going in and out. They never bothered anyone 🐝

Agree with all the replies. We have had them too. They are wonderful creatures completely non agressive and ecologically important.

Worker bumble bees do not sting, except as a last resort when attacked or cornered, since that worker dies. There is a large penalty for their small colony in losing a worker. A single worker in a nest of under one hundred, is a big loss of labour.
[Compare this with a honey bee hive/nest, where the loss of a single worker is one in several thousand. A small reduction in the productive capacity.]

Queen bees (of any species) do not die when stinging, so in Spring, be more careful of bumble bees.

Drones have no stinging capability.

Thank you for your comments. Very helpful. Watching them is like watching planes land at Gatwick (pre Covid of course!).
