the view from the bench.
- MR V RODGERS (17th Jun 2020  11:48:22)

i was sitting by Station Road. i noticed there were lots of weeds around. so i've been getting down; clearing around the rowan trees. most of the shop fronts need attention too - also the side by the vets. i'll get things done, though a small financial return would be nice (also see my gardening advertisement in Hiscock's).

but the biggest blight on the road is the former COUNTRYWIDE store. why has this not been taken? is there a problem? who is the landlord of the site? are the rates too high? if anybody out there knows more than i do, i'd be pleased to see the revival of the road.

VINCENT RODGERS.

I think it's clear there is no need for a large retail unit in Liphook.

It needs to be demolished and a large residential block of flats built in its place. Perfect for the commuters, use the car park as well and build an underground car park for the residents.

Now we are in Liphook so 3 stories would be the maximum planners would allow.

Vincent are you the landlord of the shops you have put landlord after your name. If so you are responsible for the surrounding area surely .

Adrian me old bananas you are not thinking big enough. There are already a few old 3 storeys in that road, you can normally progress over time and right by the station, let's get all our need for affordable homes out of the way in 1 go, housing is in crisis, it's a big site on the wrong side of the road between the railway line and the trading estate, station road is a hodge podge of plain Victorian, some residential from whenever, 60s non style whatever and some uninspiring later additions, don't even worry about homogeneity or aesthetics, it's not exactly The Square, let's see something inspiring and bold like those modern blocks with fancy wood cladding and different coloured concrete bits stuck all over, minimum 5 stories but why not 7 or 8, 9 or even 10?

No need for parking, right by station and work placements all around, cycle store will suffice, use the whole space up, fancy penthouses on top for a million each, some bedsits for the youth, 2 and 3 beds for the larger families, stuff overlooking the railway for the Housing Associations it's about as green as you'll get, beats Bordon without a station, them just building more roads that lead to the A3, this is our big chance!

Er

Many a true word spoken in jest.

Should be a car park for the station but I can't see either Network Rail or South Western Railways putting up the money to buy the site.

er

If we want to go big lets have 7/8 stories and if we don't have an underground car park how about building a basement and making it a Gentlemans Club, sure to bring in lots of people to the village. Not sure how you maintain social distancing with a lap dance but to be honest who cares.

Vincent,

Whilst I understand, you are clearing the weeds.

You are seeking ÂŁ100 for 5% of your business and the likelyhood am going to see any return is nil as your already offering this service for free.

It is for this reason that I won’t be investing in your business….. am out

The countrywide site has been earmarked for housing in the EHDC local plan. The owners will probably have offered it as such in the EHDC call for sites.
