Is Flora’s Bust Safe.
- Heather Lee (12th Jun 2020 11:32:22)
In these troubled times. I feel Floras bust is a open target for being pulled down. I propose we form a guard for Flora’s bust, something along ‘ Dad’s Army ‘ lines. Keep Flora’s bust safe.

There is no reason to think Flora had links to the slave trade she was quite poor.

So, anybody who was not rich was a saint, anybody who was rich was an evil slave driver according to Joe.
What we call 'slaves' these days not always had the same negative connotation and wasn't such a rare luxury reserved for the very rich. What we see as enslavement now was seen more normal in periods gone by. There is every reason to assume what we regard as legitimate employment these days will be judged very differently by future generations.
Careful with prejudgements.

Check out incidents of modern slavery at Sports Direct and Amazon warehouse staff.
If such things exist, I doubt that statues of these two will be in any danger.
After all, they alive and able to defend themselves.

No doubt the black slaves of the 17th and 18th century transported to America and the Caribbean were very profitable for the english owners. The protestors are
trying to remove statues of people connected to that trade,or those who had expressed rascism. A lady such as Flora Thompson (post worker) would hardly have been a slave trader. That was my point, not that she was good because she was not rich.

Please don't put your own words into somebody else's mouth.
I imagine what Joe means is that the infamous slave traders in the UK grew very rich [on the blood and enslavement of people who prior to being rounded up by thugs and put in chains were living their normal lives just like you and me].
That wealth was considered to be 'grubby' even in those days and to make themselves appear less grubby many of the slave traders gifted
'guilt money' to the government both nationally and locally. In that regard, they were seen by many as philanthropists - hence the statues, buildings, and roads that commemorate them.
No one is saying that these people didn't donate money to build important buildings etc, what people are saying is that one shouldn't turn a blind eye to the source of that money. They gained every penny at the cost of human lives ripped from their families.
There is a big difference between people who are commemorated because of their achievements or good deeds (such as Flora) and - fat cats - grown rich on the pain of others.

Thank goodness for the Parish Council being so hands on. Getting Flora’s bust off the streets and into a safe place . We don’t want outsiders damaging Flora’s bust. It is very gratifying to know Floras bust is safe in our hands.

The bust located in the Library has been there for several years after relocation from outside the Sorting Office

On a serious note though we do actually have a statue in the village celebrating Hugh Rose, 1st Baron Strathnairn, British Empire Field Marshall who on behalf of the Empire was responsible for the oppression of millions of Indians as well as through military action killing thousands in The Sudan, Syria and other places we had no right to be. Do we really want the memorial to this man shaming our village

Does that mean we have a empty plinth outside the sorting office. If so, can we put nominations forward for who can fill it. I will start the ball rolling. I nominate BoJo the blonde bombsite, for his handling of the Covid pandemic.

The strathnairn statue is privately owned on private land. I don’t think we can start telling people what they can have in their own garden.

There is no plinth outside the Sorting Office.
It was removed when the bust was transferred to the Library several years ago.

I assume Heather Lee is not your real name. Heatherly was the name Flora used for Grayshott.
I would think Flora would have been against slavery a she spent her entire working life working for the Post Office who were notorious for long hours and harsh rules for their poorly paid staff!
The past is the past let's concentrate on today and the future .
Stay Safe
