Cinema news
- RH2 (10th Jun 2020  21:07:24)

I received this email today. I’m really pleased it’s still going ahead....

Dear Friend,

It has been what seems like a lifetime since you signed up to this mailing list and I last spoke to you. I hope that this newsletter finds you and your families well in these unprecedented times.

The past fifteen months have been quite the roller-coaster ride for The Living Room Cinema and currently, life as we know it has changed for us all. As we now begin to edge towards some semblance of normality, I wanted to take this opportunity to explain exactly where the project is up to and what we can hope for in the near future.

Opening a new business is hard at the best of times and a cinema in particular is an incredibly complex and multifaceted operation; the average amount of time taken for a cinema to open from start to finish is around four years. At all points during this project we have worked closely with, and relied up other key stakeholders, all of which have had to deal with their own economic and operational challenges.

In the past year and a half we have experienced what I would refer to as a perfect storm: a difficult and protracted planning process, Brexit and now a global pandemic. Behind the scenes changes have been made, and the business re-structured. We have overcome these bumps in the road one by one and most importantly, we have concluded a deal to secure our future on the site in Liphook.

We have a wholly committed team – both internally here at The Living Room Cinema and all of our construction partners, professional advisors and other collaborators who are continuing to work hard – even during a pandemic – to move this along.

I am fully aware that an empty building in the centre of the town (my town) is unappealing, and personally, every time I drive past it I feel a touch of sadness that it is not complete and thriving. But right now, nothing is thriving and so for that reason I am also grateful; if we had opened on time last year we would have almost certainly had to shut our doors for good within our first year.

Now more so than ever, I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. At the beginning of 2020 I posted on our social media channels that I felt a new sense of optimism. Despite all that has happened, that sense remains. During lockdown, we have been starved of two key things: social interaction and out of home entertainment. The independent cinema experience provides escapism and entertainment in a social setting, and this pause for breath means that we have plans in place to safely guarantee the wellbeing of our customers when the time comes to open our doors.

The UK cinema industry re-opens its doors on 4th July and that is when we will be commencing the next stage of our plans, with our sincerest hope to be back on site within several weeks. Your support during the upcoming months will be absolutely key to our progress and it is my intention to keep you all up to date as much as I possibly can.

In the meantime, all of our good wishes to you all. Please do get in touch if you’d like to talk to us: hello@thelivingroomcinema.co.uk

All the best

Claire

Does anyone have a contact for the owners of the old Renault garage/cinema? There are five white doves trapped inside with no means of escape. One is already dead, others at the window facing onto the square trying to get out.

7.50 am Have just walked past and seen 2 very forlorn doves looking out of the window. I hope someone gets there soon as these doves are a lovely feature of the village.

As Claire is a local person hopefully she can do something about the doves. I am looking forward to the cinema opening and hope the owners are caring people.

Thank you to everyone who has brought this to our attention.

We have contacted the owner of the building who is coming over to address the situation today.
