Covid Hysteria
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (9th Jun 2020  18:02:13)

I know we've been overloaded with statistics but i want to give you a few to put COVID into perspective.
We have had around 50,000 deaths of people who had COVID when they died, remember they had COVID but was not the definite cause of death but it probably was a factor as most victims were elderly or had other conditions. As the year progresses it will go up and i estimate the final year end figure based on the decreasing rate of deaths will be 70,000-80,000 it will probably be less.
This does seem high but each year the normal death rate is well over 600,000 and this is steadily rising.
So we will have an increase of maybe 13-14%.
And as i have said before the chances of dying from COVID if you catch it is very low under 1%.
My point is are all these measures we are taking necessary. They are wrecking this country and it's economy.
This madness has to stop.
Let people make the decisions, if i want to give a friend a hug i should be allowed, if i want to go and visit a friend i should be allowed, if i want to go to the theatre or Cinema and sit next to a stranger that should be my choice. I'm an adult and i can assess risks and make a decision, we are allowed to smoke and drink alcohol, we know the risks and make a choice.

Banana.

What you haven’t factored in is this abject Govt. Changing decisions daily, making up the figures, losing the nations trust.
God help us.
With the mess they’ve made over coronavirus. I hate to think what sort of mess they’re making with Brexit and what’s going to materialise after.
God help us.

A significant modelling of what would have happened if we did not impose the lock down has shown that 3 million would have died in Europe as a whole by now rather than the 180k that so far have, i.e. near x17 times the death.

That would have meant near 700k deaths in the UK and deaths per million of not 600 but 10200 i.e 1% of all. Translate 1% that into the 10000 odd population of Liphook it would be been 100 odd deaths in Liphook and we do not even have 100 different street names in Liphook, so in theory an excess of 1 death on every street by now !

The bodies would have been piling up across the country!

Given the choice of listening to the views of hundreds of epidemiologists, scientists, major health organisations and governments across the world versus listening to an online troll whom identifies as a banana I have an easy choice to make.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Fyffes Robertson (10th Jun 2020  00:22:45)

Johnny,
Have you taken into consideration the SAGE experts who stated that our death toll would have been significantly lower if we had locked down at the same time as the rest of the world.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- johnny (10th Jun 2020  17:49:27)

Fyffes, I hadn't no, merely took a significant models results and took its output at x17 the death if we did nothing at all translating that into 100 deaths in Liphook pro rata.

What we are seeing now is the fed up and bored of it crew silently recruiting themselves as the 2nd wave through a lack of common sense.

These people are the weak ones, the sort that wouldn't have made it through basic military training and got turfed out as they simply cant follow or respect instructions from an overwhelming mass of minds far superior to their own.

Bananaman likes to troll on here and loves the attention he thinks his fruit branding get him. I understand he is upset with its all, but as I said, its weak...

Adrian you are now free ( if you are single) to spend the night with another person.
Use your bananas up.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Fyffes (10th Jun 2020  20:16:19)

Sorry Johnny,
What you have come up with is just supposition. Whatever figures you want to use , we are still in the top 3 or 4 Covid death rates in the world. They’re proven figures. What we are actually seeing is a Govt. that doesn’t seem able make its policy on this clear. Using your military analogy . If this cabinet were the Generals, we are looking at World War 1 competency.

Johnny - barely literate, unbelievable

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (11th Jun 2020  02:12:31)

What no one seems to have mentioned is all the extra deaths the hysteria and fear of COVID19 has caused.
People with potentially serious but treatable conditions too scared to attend A + E. Cancer suffers missing treatments, numerous operations cancelled.
People becoming mentally unwell due to the isolation.
I don't agree with everything Donald Trump has said but a quote from him at the beginning of the pandemic "We have to be careful that the cure is not worse than the disease". That is absolutely correct and the cure of lockdown and social distancing and everything else is worse that this virus.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Editor (11th Jun 2020  06:39:07)

Latest figures show we are not the highest death per capita in Europe (as regularly quoted on Talkback).

Not all countries record deaths in the same way. The data comes from the WHO dashboard.

1. San Marino - 1,235 deaths per million people

2. Belgium - 830

3. Andorra - 662

4. UK - 601

5. Spain - 580

6. Italy - 563

7. Sweden - 467

8. France - 448

9. Netherlands - 352

10. Ireland - 342

11. US - 335

Re: Covid Hysteria
- H (11th Jun 2020  09:35:07)

1 in 1000 people currently HAVE the Virus , government advisors said during yesterday's conference. R is still high just below 1.
What's the population of Liphook? You do the Maths.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Joe (11th Jun 2020  16:20:39)

Hi Editor, do not know where your figures come from but the population of San Marino is roughly 38k population of Andorra is approx 77k.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Penny Williamson (11th Jun 2020  19:32:35)

Euronews - April, 2020 - quote- San Marino is currently the world's worst-affected country in terms of COVID-19-related deaths per capita of population.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Fyffes (11th Jun 2020  23:18:39)

Total Covid deaths.San Marino have had 42 Covid deaths. Andorra have had 51 deaths.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- M (12th Jun 2020  18:09:35)

Yes "Fyffes" you are correct so when you present them as deaths per million residents (even though Andorra has only 77258 residents and San Morino has only 33927 residents) it comes out as the figures presented by the Editor.
Statistics can be presented in many ways, neither of those above are incorrect.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- John (12th Jun 2020  19:56:00)

Yeah San Marino and Andorra can safely be ignored here, we are referring to significant country’s not ones with a population of Guildford!

In addition if you remove NI, Scotland, Wales and focus on just England I think you will actually find it is the worst, beating Belgium.

If the NHS and government and country was as amazing as you all think it was we shouldn’t even be arguing about England being 4th or 1st worst !!! Over 180 countries have Covid, if we where so good we should be at position 90 or below, not lamenting oh we are 4th not 1st so it’s fine and everyone is wrong to say we did badly.

Put it this way, Andorra or not, England got to the final of crap place in the Covid World Cup

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Dollypops (12th Jun 2020  21:35:46)

Well, John, if you're not happy living in this country, choose another which you may feel would benefit from your presence

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Fyffes (12th Jun 2020  21:36:46)

John.
You are absolutely right. What I find most disturbing is that the Government keeps saying how well they’re doing.
We are told we are doing the right things albeit completely at odds with most other nations.
Why is it, if we are doing it right, we have one of the worst death rates and countries that have been doing it wrong have a much smaller death rate. Funny old world.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Brian (13th Jun 2020  09:00:42)

8 people have DIED in Liphook/Bramshott (GU30) from Covid*

So I think the use of the word Hysteria on this post is inappropriate, the risk is only as low as some of you have suggested it is by sticking to the measures.

*data from office of national statics and also on BBC site from yesterday allowing you to search for deaths by postcode.

Re: Covid Hysteria
- I (13th Jun 2020  09:56:46)

Interesting Brian, I would have expected the figure to be higher based on some of the reporting I have heard. Individually extremely sad for those who have lost their lives and for their families, terribly distressing. However when removing the emotional impact and as is often in the case with mortality, this figure is statistically very low and would indicate that as a community we have been very lucky; perhaps a reflection that we have followed social distancing, our businesses (principally Sainsbury’s, the chemist, takeaways and bank) have been responsible and our youth (despite what has sometimes been posted on Talkback) have generally complied with the lockdown restrictions. In these difficult times where there seems to be Such intense criticism and challenges directed at our society both now and in our history we should actually be proud of the people we are and how we are coping so well with these difficult times

Re: Covid Hysteria
- C (13th Jun 2020  11:47:05)

I suggest 8 reported deaths in Liphook should be put in the context of the population which was 8491 in the 2011 census and is likely to be higher now. Less than 0.1%.

We don’t have a local “excess deaths” figure to indicate how many of these people may have died anyway during this period.

Separately what is the logic about opening shops, zoos etc and allowing to single parent families, grandparents and grandchildren to meet at less than 2 metres distance but not reopening the schools?

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Peter (13th Jun 2020  12:14:48)

If 8 people got murdered in Liphook over the last 3 months, with the perpetrator still at large you find the same comfort from saying it’s just 0.01% ?

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Ian (13th Jun 2020  13:01:45)

But Peter, 8 people have not been murdered, what a stupid thing to say!

Re: Covid Hysteria
- Peter (13th Jun 2020  17:38:24)

It’s hypothetical Ian, grab a dictionary and look that up, your response is so very stupid.
