COVID Opening hours
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (8th Jun 2020  07:54:48)

Can anyone explain to me why shops are reducing their opening hours to limit the spread of COVID. Surely if you reduce your hours the customers coming in are compressed into a smaller time frame thereby increasing the amount of customers at any particular time.
You need to extend opening hours to spread out the customers.

They are limiting customers, so your argument about more customers being in store is not valid. There are 2 reasons that i can see for limiting the hours: 1. Any business that cares one jot for their staff will understand the extra pressure they are working under and 2. They need extra time outside of customer hours to clean and restock the store as they are not able to operate in the same way as before covid-19. It's pretty obvious, not rocket science...

A lot of shops have taken advantage of the Furlough scheme and have reduced the staff that are actually working, therefore less staff mean less opening hours.
Now more shops are allowed to open and more people are out and about I suspect (hope) businesses will start to open up and people will start to come off furlough and be able to get back to work.

Many supermarkets are back to nearly normal opening hours.
definitely many businesses have over egged the virus and have taken advantage of the furlough scheme even if they didn't need to.

However to keep social distancing many businesses have and will have to modify the conditions their employees work under until we have almost no virus like New Zealand.

My take is that any business that furloughed their staff and then made them redundant should pay back 50% of the furlough money to the government.
