lovely place to go
- WENDY MARTIN (20th Mar 2023 - 09:40:57)

As it was Mothers Day and our 65th wedding anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal out. We went to the Deers Hut, and it was truly great. Our table was beautifully laid, with sparkling glasses filled with yellow napkins. in the centre of the table was a vase of daffodils. The service was brilliant, and when we left I was given a little pot of yellow primroses. Oh yes... the food was excellent too.

Nice restaurant but not the pub it once was. £30 for a steak!!! No thanks

Re: lovely place to go
- Al (23rd Mar 2023 - 14:24:29)

If you think £30 for a good steak is expensive try other gastropubs, majority ask that and more, it's the going rate. You pay for what you get, I'd rather pay for an excellent meal once in a while than go to a pub which serves Sunday lunch where you know the veg will be cooked from frozen and the meat of a lesser quality (not naming any names). I have no problem with the Deers Hut, excellent food and well worth the price, but as with everything people cannot always afford what they want so cut their cloth according to their means.

Re: lovely place to go
- Lifetime resident (23rd Mar 2023 - 15:23:09)

I just wonder why GASTROPUB we used to just have pubs the name just makes me shudder. The food in gastropubs is hardly any different just costs more. There are a load of pubs around here that do very good food and yes fresh vegetables at a very reasonable price. Meat depends where they get it from especially steak and how long it’s been hung but again we have some excellent butchers around here. I know one pub that gets their meat from a local butcher excellent meat and they are not a gastropub . So the debate goes on pay a lot of money or sort out a reasonable pub . The pub in question always seems to have a full car park with posh cars so we must have some money around here. Different to back in dear old Bert Orams day hard cheese rolls take it or leave it good old days.

Re: lovely place to go
- MarkW (23rd Mar 2023 - 20:43:30)

The Deers Hut long ago stopped being a pub! It’s a restaurant plain and simple, only interested in making as much from each table as they can. Not alone in this, Links going the same way, the day of the traditional boozer has passed.

Re: lovely place to go
- Realist (23rd Mar 2023 - 22:46:28)

£30 for a steak is a lot for most people, of course if you can afford it great, this area has enough wealthy people, look at the schools around here.

But in terms of what you get with gastro pubs we all know deep down its snobbery, not a real pub atmosphere but a place to take mother in the Audi.

Sure if you needed a good steak that bad, you could have got if for a fiver in Sainsbury's, if you needed to be healthy you could steam some new potatoes and broccoli to go with it, no added salt you health conscious lot!

You'll certainly not have a beer or spirit. You'll not have chips or any of those dressings, knowing that the more luxurious and indulgent food tastes, the more fat, sugar, salt, cholesterol it has,no matter what it costs, lettuce is not gourmet, lettuce is healthy eating, gourmet is not!

Moral being, cook healthy at home to compensate for those indulgent meals out.

If you have a ton of wedge when eating out, eat gourmet, if not have a beer and a burger with your mates at the Anchor, it's all ok once in a while, nobody needs to worry what anyone else is doing, make each other feel bad, rich or poor, going out is to be with your mates, overindulge, come home poorer and vow to be healthier tomorrow, no one is going to get healthier or less healthy if they do it occasionally, whatever the price🍺🍺🍺

Re: lovely place to go
- WENDY MARTIN (24th Mar 2023 - 08:59:02)

well, what a miserable lot you are on here. All I did was say we had a lovely meal, as I also said we had been married for 65 years, I thought perhaps someone would have congratulated us. Not on your life, just nasty comments. Dont you ever get fed up with always being negative? life is too short, try and enjoy it, where ever and whatever you eat

Re: lovely place to go
- CG (24th Mar 2023 - 11:08:27)

Hi.

Huge congratulations on your long and happy marriage. May you both continue to enjoy meals out for many many more years. What’s your secret to a long marriage?

Re: lovely place to go
- dave (24th Mar 2023 - 11:40:34)

Used to be my local but got barred as I made the place look messy apparently and also upsetting the landlady; go the The Dragon now, a proper pub and the food is pretty good as well.

Re: lovely place to go
- Joe (24th Mar 2023 - 12:30:02)

Yes congratulations - I ate at the Deers Hut recently and the food was really good. Everything was made from fresh ingredients no frozen chips etc. Yes it was more expensive but the chef was obviously trained to a high standard.

Re: lovely place to go
- paul earwicker (24th Mar 2023 - 12:34:47)

Hi,
Congratulations Wendy on your wonderful long time anniversary. May you enjoy many more meals out, where ever they may be.

It makes me laugh all these food critics of our local pubs.
Only one generation ago, these establishments offered very little in culinary delights. Eating out for most working people was a luxury, only for special occasions, birthday's, anniversaries, etc.

The choice people have today to eat and drink in the area is highly commendable, with budgets to suit.

Enjoy!

Re: lovely place to go
- PR (24th Mar 2023 - 13:47:59)

Congratulations Wendy

May I add my name to the list of positive comments.

We have eaten on occasion in the Deers Hut ~ expensive for us but always brilliant, and holds fond memories as it does for you.

Re: lovely place to go
- Realist (24th Mar 2023 - 13:48:53)

Sorry Wendy, I must confess I totally misinterpreted your initial post, I had thought you were giving a pub review, I now realise you were making an announcement about your special day.

In the past a lot of snobbery surrounding especially people putting down the Anchor and it's clientele, bleating on about how better the gastro pubs were, I think we all just getting a bit defensive about our favourite pubs here!

Anyway glad you had a great day, we also have mums here and we cooked for them, not quite the same but did the flowers and cards bit too, much rather talk about our mums than argue about pubs!

Re: lovely place to go
- Steve (24th Mar 2023 - 16:41:05)

Interesting post as it highlights how our use of the internet and social media can confuse.

Initially I thought it was a bit of freebie advertising for the very Dear Hut restaurant but from the OP's subsequent post its clear she was simply hoping for acknowledgment of a more personal event.

This internet driven world does lead to an awful lot of confusion, neediness and misunderstanding. I guess its early days in the "digital revolution"

Re: lovely place to go
- Realist (24th Mar 2023 - 17:44:51)

Couldn't agree more Steve, I think we used to sit down more with a cup of tea to read the newspaper, now so many of us with phones that seem to be surgically attached to our hand, skim reading all sorts of stuff while doing something else, good and bad to it I'm sure, anyway, guilty as charged!

65 years together is certainly something to celebrate, big congratulations Wendy, very much hope to get there myself one day!

Re: lovely place to go
- passfield resident (24th Mar 2023 - 21:33:08)

MarkW- you couldn't be more wrong about the Links. People who go there just to sit and have a drink are always welcome there.

Re: lovely place to go
- WENDY MARTIN (25th Mar 2023 - 10:05:35)

Well, thats a lot better, thank you everyone. And to the lady who asked how we have stayed married for so long. I would say, having your own space. Respecting each other. Agreeing on how to cope with the children(I had four boys) and most of all a sense of humour when things go wrong.

Re: lovely place to go
- George (10th Apr 2023 - 09:12:27)

2 pints of lager, crisps and peanuts- £17!!! Dear Hut indeed! Cost of living crisis or greed?

Re: lovely place to go
- Local (10th Apr 2023 - 10:31:30)

That’ll teach you George you have to be very rich to drink there. But they must be doing something right car park always full with posh cars that tells you something. We have a very good selection of pubs around here to all tastes and pockets.

Re: lovely place to go
- M (10th Apr 2023 - 11:09:31)

George how many bags of crisps and nuts did you have?
Seems a bit steep, guessing not too many at that price.
Thanks for the feedback and warning.
Last time I went the service was terrible and so just for a pint now visit the Links.
They are also more friendly and a pint was a fiver of decent American Pale.
Bit more reasonable.

Re: lovely place to go
- Jo (10th Apr 2023 - 11:12:01)

If we pay it, they'll charge it! Go where you can afford and enjoy. No need to keep up with the Joneses. Each to their own. Or have an occasional treat at home. Make a treat too regular and it isn't a treat at all!

Re: lovely place to go
- George (10th Apr 2023 - 12:29:28)

M, just 1 bag of salted nuts and 1 bag of plain crisps and 2 pints of lager (the Spanish one). Not that posh either as it looked like a load of aggro was going to kick off when I was there on Good Friday!

Re: lovely place to go
- A J (10th Apr 2023 - 14:40:46)

Hi all, to ask a question have you not seen the costs of the electric or the o2 phone bills going up by 17%!?

Bbc news reported a 17.9% increase on costs for Heineken alone, I have just googled and seen that approx 32 pubs a week closed in 2022. If you do the facts your argument is simply as silly as you!

I drove past after my gym session earlier and saw a total mixture of cars there, couldn’t stop as needed to be home to see the mother in law.

If it’s that bad why is the pub car park full?!

Clearly someone doesn’t like the fact a business is doing well!?

If all the pubs in liphook shut what would you moan about? The estate agents or the coffee shops?
Would life be boring!!

Re: lovely place to go
- Local (10th Apr 2023 - 15:28:08)

A J I think people compare prices around local pubs. George’s bill seems to be rather high but as you and I have said car park full so must be doing something right. Liphook has become a wealthy area and compared to London it probably seems reasonable times have changed this is happening everywhere. Salcombe in Dorset local people priced out can’t live there anymore 2000 people in winter 23000 in the summer Holiday homes. Similar happening around here with prices.

Re: lovely place to go
- Joe (10th Apr 2023 - 17:31:36)

Local the house prices here are quite modest compared with the south coast where a modest bungalow can fetch a million pounds.
I was in the Withies at Compton last week for a drink - one pint of beer, a small whiskey and one packet of nuts, 16 pounds. It is quite astonishing when a bottle of wine in the supermarket can be had for approx six pounds.

Re: lovely place to go
- Ben (10th Apr 2023 - 20:03:03)

It only follows that The Deers Hut charges restaurant prices for its drinks as it’s a restaurant now, not a pub!

Re: lovely place to go
- A J (10th Apr 2023 - 20:52:05)

Ben, I might have missed something along the line but am sure it’s called The Deers Hut Pub.

My good god if you visit Surrey you will be horrified and if you visit London. Well you might all be in for a shock.
My last visit to London the print was £9.00

Re: lovely place to go
- Ben (10th Apr 2023 - 21:55:34)

Yes AJ, you have missed the point completely! Because it calls itself a pub doesn’t mean it is still a pub. You cannot even stand or order at part of the bar now and unless you have reserved a table you are unlikely to find a seat to just have a drink. They make it quite clear they are not interested if you are just in for a drink, despite it being called a pub. There’re not the only licensed premises that have gone down this route. That being said though, I do appreciate that a traditional boozer is unlikely to survive in an area like liphook but it’s a shame!

Re: lovely place to go
- A j (11th Apr 2023 - 08:07:03)

Ben,

I have seen the football during the World Cup in there and strangely there was a lot of people around the bar, standing and on stools. The sofa area was packed with families enjoying the game.

With that in mind I believe it is still a pub, as people can order a pint and stand in a bar area, or sit on a sofa area which makes the conversation more intimate.

How many pubs do you know that do not do food? I run a business that is logistics and that has been horizontally integrated to offer additional services as it was a way to bring in income to maintain the business.

The Green dragon for example is a pub and they offer food.
Same as the Royal Anchor.

Re: lovely place to go
- Local (11th Apr 2023 - 09:55:22)

Green Dragon great pub fantastic food good prices great to have a good local in the middle of our village.

Re: lovely place to go
- dave (11th Apr 2023 - 12:54:05)

I pay a lot less than £17 for a couple of pints, nuts and crisps. Prices are killing off pubs

Re: lovely place to go
- geoff holland (11th Apr 2023 - 16:46:11)

I think the best way to view this objectively is to put prices aside for one moment.

You could walk into The Deers Hut, The Green Dragon, The Links and The Anchor and order the same pint of Guinness and it most likely would taste the same, if not identical, in each establishment. However, if I was going out for the evening I know which of those places I'd rather go to and it certainly wouldn't be any of the latter.

I have a strong suspicion that most of the people complaining about prices on this thread would also moan about the difference in cost between a Toyota and a Mercedes, citing that each have four wheels and a steering wheel and they should therefore cost the same.

As Oscar Wilde said, "The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing".

Cheers, Geoff.

Re: lovely place to go
- er (11th Apr 2023 - 20:32:47)

Horses for courses Geoff, but personally if I was going out for a night with my mates, both on price and atmosphere and availability of pool table, then good old fashioned Anchor for me, a lot of me old muckers were a bit dodgy in their day so they won't mind! Ok not been there since last summer but then I'm travelling a lot now.

But if money is no object and I want to compare Ferraris, especially pre 1970s varieties, The Hut, for a more than reasonable mid experience, The Dragon (as I guess JC would say, a reasonably priced pub), if I just want to show off my mid range BMW or Audi and talk mortgages maybe The Links, for a pint of real ale and a natter about books the Prince of Wales, maybe I'm out of touch and it's all changed but those are my simplistic markers:)

The Riser for me, combines the best of all worlds (although a sod of a walk from Liphook!)

Thought I would meet some pals to snatch a drink over bank holiday, bit posh but we had a laugh

Re: lovely place to go

ha ha Mickey, very clever moosh! It was a bit dicey on Good Friday wasn't it. Think you might have got barred

Interesting to see on Tripadvisor that The Hut has been awarded a Travellers Choice
