Lost Labrador
- Angela Glass (28th Nov 2021 - 10:07:30)

Lost yesterday afternoon near Rectory Lane, Bramshott a young fox red female Labrador. Still missing. Could by now be on commons near Passfield, Grayshott, etc. Any info or sightings please contact Jenny on 07973 562390.

Any update?

Re: Lost Labrador

Sadly no. She has not been sighted since shortly after leaving a field. It is a long time to be missing especially in this weather. Can only hope she is inside somewhere.

Re: Lost Labrador

Might be worth going into Downlands and asking them to keep a lookout in the woods

Re: Lost Labrador
- Angela Glass (30th Nov 2021 - 09:47:49)

Yes, Downlands are aware and their keepers have been keeping an eye out for her, as have local dog-walkers.

Re: Lost Labrador

It is now one week since Nelly went missing from Bramshott.
Perhaps you may know someone who has heard of a new rescue dog near to them? Not everyone uses social media and may not be aware, so please spread the word. Any information leading to her safe return will be gratefully received.

Sadly, dogs are lost like this all too often. I so often see notices pinned onto gateposts by people who have lost a much-loved pet dog.

Why do people allow their dogs to run around off the lead when they must be aware that their dog does not have good recall and is not fully trained to reliably come back to the owner immediately when called?

The countryside in this area is full of deer, rabbits and other creatures that a dog might either be frightened by or excited by and wish to chase. So it's no surprise, surely, that dogs run off after another animal, are chased by another animal or go exploring, chase an animal and then get lost?

If owners were to keep their dogs on leads when walking in the countryside, they could spare themselves the heartbreak of a lost pet.

There are designated, safe, fenced dog-walking fields that owners can take their pets to if their own back garden is too small and they feel the need to let the dog run around unfettered.

Jen, your post seems rather cruel. I’m sure the owner is going through enough.

Jen.

I am sure that your message on this posting will come as a great comfort to this family who have lost their dog

I thought this particular lost dog was found a few days ago. Maybe it's a different dog?

Re: Lost Labrador
- Angela Glass (5th Dec 2021 - 14:28:55)

Nelly went missing from her owner’s field, not on a walk.
She has been found this morning in Bramshott, badly injured but alive, thank goodness, after 8 days. Fingers crossed for her.

Re: Lost Labrador
- Angela Glass (5th Dec 2021 - 15:23:35)

Update. The vet believes Nelly was stuck in a snare for 4 to 6 days, and sadly she will have to have her leg amputated.
Thank you to everyone who looked out for her.

That's such good news that Nelly was found and I'm sure she'll recover well from the op.

So glad to hear Nellie has been found I wish her well poor girl she must have been In so much pain,a huge relief for her and her owner that she has been found .

Re: Lost Labrador
- Joe (5th Dec 2021 - 19:28:15)

What a horrible ordeal for both pet and owner. I am pleased she has been found alive though.

Re: Lost Labrador
- Bella (5th Dec 2021 - 19:36:50)

I hope Nelly will be OK. So glad she has been found.

Jen - What a nasty message to post when someone is already feeling awful

Re: Lost Labrador
- Jen (5th Dec 2021 - 21:32:41)

Oh, poor little Nelly, what an ordeal for her (and indeed her owners too). I do hope that she makes a good recovery.

To Bella - and anyone else who interpreted my post as "nasty" in some way - I can only apologise. Suffice it to say that there was absolutely no malice intended. I was actually trying to be kind, just trying to, hopefully, save other poor dog owners from the heartbreak of losing their pet in the same way that so many others have done.

- John (6th Dec 2021 - 16:50:41)

Thanks for the update Angela. I had seen the posts on Facebook and on posters around Conford and I had been looking for her whilst on my own dog walks. Great news that she has been found although her injury must have distressed her greatly but hopefully she will recover well from the surgery.

I'm sure that her owners are just pleased to have her back. Nice to have a story on here with a happy ending.

Re: Lost Labrador
- Sarah (6th Dec 2021 - 19:17:39)

So glad Nellie has been found, thank goodness she got free from the snare, such a cruel way to trap animals.

Re: Lost Labrador
- passfield resident (6th Dec 2021 - 19:56:37)

We had a dog that got caught in a snare but fortunately lay still until we found her so wasn't hurt. I think snares should be illegal. They are barbaric. If rabbits or foxes need to be controlled there are better ways to do it.Before anyone accuses me of not understanding how the countryside is managed, I have friends who are farmers or work in estate management and think I do understand perfectly well.

Re: Lost Labrador
- Angela Glas (7th Dec 2021 - 10:26:01)

A friend of Nelly's owner has set up a Gofundme page to help pay for Nelly's amputation and rehabilitation. If you feel you would like to help, please visit gofund.me/d93645c2

Many thanks for your vigilance, and please take care when exercising your dogs on the commons.

- diane (7th Dec 2021 - 11:38:02)

Anyone know who is setting snares and causing danger to wildlife and our cats and dogs

Re: Lost Labrador
- Joe (7th Dec 2021 - 13:26:34)

I think only certain types of snares are illegal it would be good to know if this was on private land or publicly accessible land?

Re: Lost Labrador
- passfield resident (7th Dec 2021 - 17:53:18)

Gamekeepers set snares with thicker wire for foxes, then shoot them. Some people will say these snares are more humane but animals still can suffer terrible injuries or be terrified for a long period.

Re: Lost Labrador
- Angela Glass (7th Dec 2021 - 23:23:46)

Very pleased to report that Nelly has survived her amputation, and although extremely skinny, is able to stand on her three legs.
