Bramshott Rectory apple
- Claire Matthes (10th Aug 2021 - 11:53:51)

We recently discovered that Bramshott has its very own Heritage apple variety!

Thought to have originated in the garden of Bramshott Rectory, Liphook, England, it was received by the National Fruit Trials in about 1938.

As a Community Orchard Project based in nearby Haslemere, we find these stories of local fruit varieties fascinating and not a little romantic.

So my questions are, does anyone knowingly have a Bramshott Rectory apple tree? Does anyone know of any local orchards (an orchard is six fruit trees or more)? And does Bramshott Rectory still exist (from circa 1938)?
We'd love to know!

I expect you have already Googled this Apple, there are many sites which mention it, and I did notice one which offers to supply it in grafted form if you order it. So presumably there is going to be a donor/parent tree somewhere.

Hailie, on Portsmouth Road, was Bramshott Rectory from around 1917 to 2000 - see research.hgt.org.uk/item/hailie

The orchard was sold off for development when the house was sold by the church, and there is now only one original apple tree left in the garden. I didn't know that there was a Bramshott Rectory apple - I wonder whether the remaining apple tree is of this variety!

I am confused. Glebe house is in Rectory lane Bramshott. It would make sense to have previously been the Bramshott rectory. Why would Bramshott Rectory be in Portsmouth rd Liphook?

Maybe because LIphook is in the parish of Bramshott

I believe that Glebe House was the rectory prior to Hailie

The Parish church is in Bramshott the church centre off the Portsmouth Rd is a relatively new building and would not have had a rectory. The entries on the website that links to the thread has several errors on it relating to Liphook.

Apologies for earlier post -an online article explained why it was known as the rectory, as it was owned by the church commissioners for many years. When Inigo Triggs first designed it, the house was called Hailie. Do not ever think it was referred to as Bramshott Rectory just “ The Rectory”.

I know that back in the 70's or 80's Lord Selborne, who owned the Blackmoor estate, was very interested in unusual apple varieties so it may be worth contacting the Blackmoor Apple Farm to see if they have any examples of this variety. I can remember Lord Selborne coming out to look at one of our apple trees to see if it was a rare ancient variety although I don't remember the outcome.

Thanks everyone!
I too followed the leads and yes, it would appear that Hailie down Portsmouth Road was Bramshott Rectory in the years that the Apple was presented to the National Fruit Collection. It had orchards until removed for development at the start of this century.
Our hope is to source one and plant it in Liphook near where it originated from.

Just a little further information about Bramshott Rectory.

If you look online at 'Detailed old Victorian Ordnance Survey maps 6" to the mile. 1883-1913, the original Bramshott Rectory can be seen marked clearly in Rectory Lane, Bramshott, next to Downland Cottages.
However, the information about the house in Portsmouth Road Liphook is fascinating.
The maps I mentioned above are very helpful, because you can overlay the modern maps using a slider which fades them in or out.
Be warned though, when I first found them I couldn't stop looking at all the places I'd ever lived until about 2am in the morning.
Happy viewing!

Probably you guessed that I've been doing a bit of research prior to this announcement about proposed plans for a Community Orchard in Bramshott and Liphook?!

I'm so grateful for the chatter and information that has been generated here. I feel that this is a particularly special orchard proposal due to the fascinating story behind the Bramshott Rectory apple. And there's still more research to do! Which will be shared as I verify details and seek certain permissions

We know that here in Liphook we are blessed with several wide, open recreation spaces which have been a particular boon to local residents during the pandemic. Bramshott and Liphook Parish Council are now proposing to provide its residents with a quieter, contemplative and fruitful space in the form of a Community Orchard on an area of parish-owned land at Fletchers Field. They are working with us, Community Orchard Project South East (COPSE www.copseorchardproject.org) to explore this idea in more detail and gather residents’ thoughts and ideas about how they might use this very special space. MORE info to follow...

Hello,

I grow two trees of Bramshott Rectory here in Ohio, United States. Great tasting apples.

Derek also commented "The best pic I have of them is from National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in Kent and is attached. The pic I took of them a couple years ago is blurry and I have not retaken it yet. I also grow Howgate Wonder which is from Hampshire.

I grow 1,700 heirloom and unusual different apple varieties of which probably a third are from England.

thanks,
Derek Mills
