Cockerel
- Anne (19th Apr 2021 - 12:13:54)

Need I say more? I thought cockerels only crowed early in the morning but someone in Liphook has one that does not stop ALL DAY LONG. I don't know exactly where it lives but I'd hate to be the next door neighbours. Surely in a semi urban area cockerels are not the most welcome "pet"

Semi-Urban?

Liphook might be now to some (I'd argue it's not) but this is still the countryside.

Semi-Urban is places like Farnham and Alton.

And it's not out of place to hear wildlife in the countryside

Surely Anne you are just trying to be provocative?

Depends which part of Liphook it is in. If it is in the back garden of a house in the middle of a housing estate then hardly countryside. We have a population near to 10 thousand people railway station and large ish supermarket. The district council describe Liphook as an urban centre I believe. Hardly countryside, but some semi rural and rural parts, (which a lot of people want to build over).

It's the pampered cockerels of today, no bloomin respect, probably hangs around Muddy Lane smoking and drinking, never done a hard day's work on the farm in its life!

Whoever it was that told you that cockerels only crow in the mornings was pulling your leg! They crow all day, as you've discovered (and sometimes all night!).

Here's an interesting article about them.

As to the urban/rural debate, I would say that Liphook itself is definitely semi-urban (or semi-rural, whichever is your preferred term). It's not "the countryside", in my opinion, as the whole area is quite built-up and developed.

It’s in the mead somewhere,

He certainly does have a lot to say for himself but I would rather hear him than dogs yapping and barking or loud music of someone else’s choice.

I think there may be two!

There is one at the back of Malthouse Meadows, you can see it from the road by Radford Park.

It is rather vocal for quite a lot of the day! I would not like to be their neighbour!
