Tobogganing on the Roads
- Resident (24th Jan 2021 - 13:16:17)

I know it's fun in the snow and yes I was young once, but please could I encourage people not to illegally toboggan on the public roads (won't say where so as not to encourage copy cats) the roads here are life lines for many vulnerable people to go out for food or walks and in an emergency ambulances will need to get through, you are all turning it into an ice rink by compressing it all and it's dangerous for walkers and anyone who may need to drive once the hill is unpassable you will just go home and leave us to it for days or weeks! Thank you very much!

- N (24th Jan 2021 - 13:43:32)

It'll all be gone by the morning im sure!
Give the kids a break! They too have had their lives turned upside down, let them have some fun FOR ONE DAY. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Z (24th Jan 2021 - 14:41:06)

Yes, you naughty tobogganing people...fancy compressing the snow like that, you weigh far more than a regular sized car.
Tut tut.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Joe (24th Jan 2021 - 15:21:47)

There are plenty of hills to use without having to toboggan down a road which has vehicles using the road today as well. It is dangerous if the car lost control on a hill with bends. I too saw this family and saw how dangerous it was. I saw two cars lose control in the same road.

- gareth j rees (24th Jan 2021 - 16:06:45)

nothing illegal about a bit of sledging on a quiet side road

how brave of 'resident' to post the message annonymously

my kids have had it tough

they've been indoors since christmas and they're a bit sad and a bit fed up

the snow put a big smile on little faces

we've been out most of today and it's been fun

editor: what about asking some of the moaning old people on here to post names?

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Pete (24th Jan 2021 - 17:23:26)

Hear HEAR! Ed can we get a system of validated email addresses please, I suspect 70% of this site is just one person with many different names.

I think it’s completely fair that validated emails are used and people should at the very least use a proper first name etc

I guess it depends what you are looking for. Liphook Rants on facebook allows anonymous posts, but you have to post replies from your own facebook account, as far as I know. Haslemere.com used to have a blog with real names but it is was very ‘sterile’ with no lively debates, it seems to have disappeared now.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Penny Williamson (24th Jan 2021 - 18:05:15)

I understand and can see both sides of this debate. Sledges do compact roads more than cars, not sure why but they do and snowy roads that are subject to sledging can become like an ice rink. Years ago some children were sledging on a quiet residential road with a slight hill going round a corner. The corner became like an ice rink and two cars skidded as they approached the bend and went into a fence.

The parents who lived in the house by the corner were approached by concerned neighbours and as has been said in posts on this Thread received the retort “The kids are just having fun”. Guess what the next day the father of said children slipped on that corner and broke his leg. His attitude changed after that – no more sledging. I wonder why.

Yes I agree kids must have fun and this pandemic has hit them as hard as everyone else, but we are blessed to live where we do with acres of accessible countryside, village greens and play areas which I understand are still open so I fail to understand Gareth when he says “my kids have had it tough - they've been indoors since Christmas and they're a bit sad and a bit fed up.” Why have they been indoors since Christmas? My grandchildren have been out every day, rain or shine, walking, cycling, playing football etc always abiding by Covid guidelines.

Resident was only making a point and a plea in a very non-confrontational way which did not warrant some of the replies.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- gareth j rees (24th Jan 2021 - 19:10:34)

they're really is no debate

it's not illegal to go sledging on a quiet side road

and cars compact the snow much more than a kid on a sledge

the point i was making that it has been very, very tough for children

i am always staggered by the lack of humanity on this site

the old people on here want cake and to eat it, they are ludicrously self centred and obsessed by themselves

despite the weather my kids have been outside

but they haven't seen their family at christmas, they haven't seen their school friends, they haven't had contact with teachers

but

they did see the snow today and loved it - we had snowball fights, built a snowman and sledged down our road

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Joe (24th Jan 2021 - 19:14:05)

In answer to Gareth J Rees, the road in question was not a quiet suburban level back road, but the B road between Liphook and Hammer which has a 60 mile an hour limit, nasty hilly bends, single passing places for cars and I myself have witnessed a few nasty accidents there. This morning 2 cars skidded of control and got stuck in the snow. There were quite a few cars going downhill around the bends. There are plenty of safer places to have fun on a sledge around here.
Also I find it a tad hypocritical, as in a previous post you moaned about fireworks going off and maybe waking up your children.
We have all been kept indoors, some of us since last March.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- D (24th Jan 2021 - 19:45:22)

How many new infections do you think taking your children out sledging today caused, Mr Gareth J Rees? We are all fed up with lockdown but activities such as yours today are only going to prolong it. Social responsibility? Oops! Too much time on my hands, of course I have!

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- gareth j rees (24th Jan 2021 - 19:53:35)

there's a general rule in life joe

and that's don't take p!ss

fireworks on a work night and late is one thing

kids sledging in the snow is quite different

and whilst sledging on a B road may be very stupid

it's not illegal

and btw thanks for confirming who the 'resident' is joe

care to give a surname next to your view of the world?

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Care Worker (24th Jan 2021 - 20:00:40)

I’d like to give a different perspective if I may. Whilst I totally understand that people want to enjoy the snow and sledging, I have 2 children myself please spare a thought for people like me that are working in all weathers in the community. We visit people at home when they have been discharged from hospital including those with and recovering from Covid19. We work 365 days a year. I was in Farnham this morning and I had to abandon my car and walk because the roads were so bad and the side roads even worse. Sledging on them makes it a thousand times worse and delays us visiting people who need our help. This service is available to all that need it and one day that could be you. Please could I appeal to you all & ask if you would kindly try and keep off the roads, major and minor when sledging. I made it home to Liphook because the good people in Farnham pushed me on more than one occasion today. I am extreme grateful to them all.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Mike T (24th Jan 2021 - 20:04:57)

Just thought I'd check in on Talkback tonight to see what time they started today and what type of snow complaints there would be.

I understand the safety thoughts behind the original post and this forum never disappoints. We're all so lucky (including me) during lockdown to have so much more time to complain.

PS- Thank you Editor for keeping this forum available for us all and trying to keep us all on the original topic- clearly not an easy task!

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- joe (24th Jan 2021 - 21:01:14)

Gareth, you had a moan about fireworks and felt justified. Others have moaned about your children sledging on the roads and felt justified. What others have not done though, but what you have done, is to start ranting about the moaning elderly, and complain that your children's lives have been curtailed by Coronavirus.
A lot of things children do are not illegal, but some actions, encouraged by you as a responsible adult , could be classed as selfish and
possibly dangerous.
Finally, the editor can confirm that "Resident" is a different I P address and email to mine.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Penny Williamson (24th Jan 2021 - 21:25:08)

Yes Gareth J Rees there is a debate. That is what this site is about. Debate with respect for other people’s opinions. You say in one post that “they've been indoors since christmas and they're a bit sad and a bit fed up” and in your next post you say “despite the weather my kids have been outside” so please make up your mind and be consistent. BTW I do hope you have read Care Worker’s post and taken that to heart. Everyone is suffering from this awful pandemic and lockdown but we in Liphook and surrounding areas are so much luckier and better off than many, many people in other parts of this country and the rest of the world.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Resident (24th Jan 2021 - 23:47:51)

Thanks for your all replies and debates on tobogganing on the roads!

If it is lawful to toboggan down these open roads then so be it, suprised but my sincerest apologies, but some slides I saw today were close shaves and not safe tobogganing and it does compact the ice!

As Ed said, he is fine with usernames which is common enough, I am not Joe all you need to know. I made a point of not mentioning any ages or locations, I certainly wasn't referring to any particular families, in fact there were all ages and quite a few groups out and about, snowballs etc all good fun, I don't agree with tobogganing on open roads that's my perspective I chose to speak 'generally' I don't need to prove 'bravery' to anyone as an older person I've been around the block and Ed gave you all your answer on that point!!

Personally I had no problem seeing parents pulluing their children along or children playing, having fun in these tough times is great of course parents will stick up for their kids, but rtound my way I saw groups of teenagers and young adults without children and suprised if there are not some suitable off road hills in this area it's the South Downs after all!

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Paul (25th Jan 2021 - 17:12:58)

How about the idiots who think it’s fun trying to get car side ways it’s not just the young people doing this people going to fast around corner saw today van lot control on corner and took out wing mirror on back of parked up lorry kids are having fun you was kids once so come on if it was main road yes

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- gareth j rees (25th Jan 2021 - 17:41:57)

we live in a divided country

and liphook is divided along many lines

one of which is young and old

the original post was unkind

i am personally exasperated with the general lack of understanding for young people from the old in liphook

and it would be good if some of the older posters reflected on that

and penny/joe if you want to win the argument it's always better to play the ball

not the man

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Joe (25th Jan 2021 - 18:45:05)

Gareth, the original posting was not unkind, far from it. You must be reading things into it which are not there. I refer you again to re read your postings complaining / moaning about fireworks. Which moan is more valid? Having children does not mean you should disregard the requirements / opinions of those not currently bringing up children.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Helen (25th Jan 2021 - 19:30:38)

Telling people what to do on social media forums is an interesting phenomenon of the pandemic. If you really cared about social distancing in Sainsbury's, the punch bowl, Covid snow balls or tobogganing in the road you would address the issue in situ vs hiding behind a social media posting where nobody is tobagonning in the road or get a bit crowdy in Sainsbury's.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Jules (26th Jan 2021 - 10:31:53)

Tobogganing on the roads = survival of the fittest.
Catching Covid out doors??
It is hugely passed on in the home, in the workplace and on public transport.
Outdoor sports events caused a spike in cases due to pinch points such as turnstiles, toilets and bars.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Penny Williamson (26th Jan 2021 - 14:19:44)

Gareth j rees I am not trying to win anything whether this be an argument or debate. I was merely illustrating in my personal experience of an incident where sledging on a road could be dangerous to other road users – in this case the father of the children who were sledging. I am not quite sure what you mean by “play the ball not the man” and for the record if you are implying I am Joe – see your reference to Joe/Penny, I can assure you I am not Joe. Please check with the Editor if you do not believe me. I have seen similar inferences and allegations on this site before when people want to discredit other posters with whom they do not agree by accusing them of being the same person using different names. If you were not implying this then I apologise.

The B road between Liphook and Hammer, isn't that Hewshott Lane? Legal or not, is it really a good idea for a child to play on a public road? I don't think so, it's a bit like flying a kite at an airfield. We have the rec and Radford Park after all.

As for the country and Liphook being divided along many lines, I don't think so, Mr. Gareth Jrees. But there are always insidious subversives with an agenda trying to convince us we are.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- D the keyboard warrior with too much time on his/her hands (26th Jan 2021 - 18:46:09)

Toboggan, or not toboggan. That is the question.

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- Joe (27th Jan 2021 - 20:24:45)

Yes D it is hilly Hewshott. Many near misses on the hilly road without throwing toboganning into the equation as well!

Re: Tobogganing on the Roads
- D the keyboard warrior with too much time on his/her hands (27th Jan 2021 - 21:12:35)

I don't believe it. Is that what today's parents let their kids do? Unbelievable.
