Ultrafast Internet for Passfield & Surrounds
- Julian (9th Dec 2020 - 17:44:17)

Sign up today!

For over two years we have been working with OpenReach to provide Ultrafast Internet services to Passfield and the surrounding areas. The service will replace our ageing coper and provide speeds of up to 1Gbps.

The total cost for the project is £675,000 and each residential property signing-up will receive a voucher for £3000 towards the total cost. Business connections will receive a voucher for £3500.

If your property is connected to Passfield Exchange (usually an 01428 751xxx number) and you would like to sign-up for Ultrafast Fibre, you can make your pledge on the Openreach web site by visiting the link below.

Areas covered by Pasfield Exchange are; Passfield, Conford, Hill House Hill, Burgh Hill, Hollywater, Headley (some), Standford (some) Gentles Lane, Bramshott Road, Tulls Lane,

To achieve our target we need as many to sign up as possible.

How much will each house need to pay for installation and what are the monthly costs?

Why after 2 years hasn’t the few in passfield signed up? If it’s just a matter of signing up why has it taken two years?

are you saying that each house has to pay thousands of pounds?

Just to confirm as the wording does look a little bit scary……

The Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) are paying – not individual households.

Households register / pledge that they want fast broadband.

There is a target number of households required.

Once the target is met – ie enough households have signed up to fast broadband – the DCMS will send householders a voucher.

The vouchers are a government pledge to cover the network build costs (like gift vouchers to BT Open reach!).

The ‘gift vouchers’ have to be filled in and sent to BT.

Then – hey presto – Ultrafast Full Fibre broadband exists.

All you have to do is let your current service provider know about it.

When your service provider has upgraded you to Ultrafast speeds, you need to let the DCMS know.

I hope that explains it. PLEASE encourage everyone you know in Passfield to sign up. We really need this.

Have you worked out how many householders are needed to offset the initial cost?
I have read about a community elsewhere who managed to get the price down as the promise from the government about every household being entitled to this should stand surely?

Re: Ultrafast Internet for Passfield & Surrounds

@ John - The installation cost is covered by a voucher of £3000 for each residence that signs up.

It has taken Openreach over two years to provide the quotation.

@Barry - The voucher covers the cost of installation. There is no cost to the householder.

Once fibre has been installed, the householder can choose their fibre internet service with their current (or a new) provider.

As a guide BT are currently offering retail pricing as follows;

- 150Mb down 30Mb up @ £39.99
- 300Mb down 50Mb up @ £49.99
- 900Mb down 110Mb up @ £59.99

@Joe - To achieve the Openreach target of £675,000 we require 225 residences / businesses to sign up. Each community is unique quoted on its own basis.

Hi Julian

My understanding is that there are around 480 phone lines out of the Passfield exchange including business ones.

Obviously not all have broadband on them, probably less than 400.

So, for this to proceed you’ll need over 50% of the exchange customers to commit to higher speeds and costs. Good luck.

Please tell everyone you know about this.

We are desperate to have a normal working internet that will allow us to work from home without having to take it in turns to open our emails!

Lots of people don't know about it, so please try to spread the word

Some great news .

... a year and a half later, the UK Government have released our Fibre Internet vouchers. The project is go!

If you reside in Conford, Passfield or surrounds, please check your Inbox, Junk and Spam folders for an email from Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

To confirm your Voucher you must still follow the link in the email and make your application.

Thank you
Julian.

Swish Fibre look to be installing along the Haslemere Road at the moment near the Maltings, is this going to improve speeds for local residents?

It's not clear from a very quick glance at their website as to what they are doing exactly but seems to indicate it's only available through their own ISP and not overly cheap.

Hi, about to move to Passfield Road and would be interested to know if it is still possible to obtain vouchers to be a part of this scheme or if it will now be available to the masses? I gather that max download is only 12mpbs on the copper line at the house we are moving to at the moment which is probably just about enough for what we need but I know that that is a maximum so day to day could be lower….

Thanks
Tim

Have said it before, and will say it again. Digging up roads, carbon footprint, all for a cable.

Starlink is the future!

Re: Ultrafast Internet for Passfield & Surrounds
- Tim Cullis (11th Jan 2023 - 12:28:15)

Yes, cant disagree on the carbon footprint point, but the upfront cost and ongoing rental is a bit prohibitive for me at the moment. Am hoping (!) that a fibre solution, if available will be a bit cheaper than the £75/ month cost that I was quoted for Starlink.

Hi Tim,

I have been working on the Community Fibre Partnership project for Passfield and surrounds. Openreach are currently installing fibre and we have been given a 'ready to order' date of 31st January 2023, however I feel that this may be extended slightly.

Please could you email me your details, including full name, address, postcode and telephone number to gu30internet@smallworldit.com. I can then send your details to Openreach for a voucher.

Kind regards

Julian.
