Please Slow Down
- Russ Ellis (7th Jul 2020 - 15:59:03)

The Avenue Today at school time afternoon the traffic was very heavy . But the speed was ridiculous it’s a 20MPH limit please slow down. There our children running around and residents trying to get into their driveways. My Wife was so scared because a woman came up behind her so fast she clipped a parked car outside of our house. So Please Slow Down.

When Lockdown started people got used to there being no cars to slow them down along the Avenue and ignoring the speed limit became almost normal. Now drivers need retraining that this is a residential road with schools.Would the Highways dept. allow temporary signs to remind drivers ?

Yes it’s about time the EHDC and HCC gave us the promised relief Road. Someone will be killed at school time the speed of the cars is horrendous. With more and more traffic coming in on the Headley Road wanting to access the A3 it can only get worse.

Nobody promised a relief road. There was a study of 6 options possibly available but there was no definitive promise to build in the conclusion.

We have only lived here for just over one year and have certainly noticed the traffic changes with the lockdown and now that it has restarted again.
We don't live in The Avenue, we do use it at times and I agreed with Russ Ellis that it is a dangerous road during school times and just hope there will never be a serious accident there.

It is difficult to know what the solution could be though, as not all children will be able to walk there, especially when it is raining. Maybe they should build a car park on some of their land and put traffic lights at Headley Road and Longmoor Road for safety. The Bohunt pupils already make it difficult when they arrive by car for dropping off.

Always walked to school rain sleet or snow
Wore a coat and hung on the back of the chair
Kids seems to be afraid of wearing coats

I agree with gr, I don't remember ANYONE being driven to school in the 70's. There weren't any obese kids either. Could there be a connection, do you think?

Re: Please Slow Down
- JP (13th Jul 2020 - 00:13:49)

Your memory must be failing D. There were plenty of people being driven to school in the 70's (especially to Bramshott) although maybe not as many as now.

Re: Please Slow Down
- D (13th Jul 2020 - 07:47:20)

Maybe at your school, JP but not at mine. If you remember (maybe you don't) schools had catchment areas in those days so no child lived beyond cycling distance.

Re: Please Slow Down
- er (13th Jul 2020 - 12:52:48)

Not everyone went to the local school but anyway nowhere near as many mums worked in the 70s, so now having to drop their kids off and drive to work, mums could take the time to walk the kids to school. Surely this is progress but comes with changes to how busy the roads are. That's why I said on a previous post we need more dedicated cycle routes and asked for input on where they could go, but not one single suggestion, lets face it we moan about cars but really we are totally in love with them, even the whiners only want other peoples cars to go away!

Re: Please Slow Down
- Rob (13th Jul 2020 - 14:41:58)

There are a lot of kids driven to school who really don't need to be. There's no reason why a kid living even as far out as the Berg estate couldn't walk to school, it's not even a mile! That's a 20 minute walk. It is more difficult with Bohunt kids as they come from all over but certainly primary age ones mostly come from within the village. We live closer than that and so never drive the kids, but even if we didn't I'd still make them walk, as others have said, buy them a decent coat once a year and they'll be fine. It isn't like we live in Canada with 10' snow drifts, the worst we get is a bit chilly and some rain and wind.

Re: Please Slow Down
- Linda Morris (13th Jul 2020 - 15:10:51)

Walking should be encouraged - healthier and less traffic, which is already a problem in Liphook at times. In fact is must surely be quicker walking than braving the traffic when it is rush hour.

Re: Please Slow Down
- JP (14th Jul 2020 - 01:17:54)

D - you were only allowed to cycle to Bramshott in the 3rd and 4th year (if I remember right). And if there were both girls and boys in the family the parent would need to be in two places at once to drop off and pick up (London Road for the girls and Bramshott for the boys). Car sharing was common though - I have memories of half a dozen of us squeezing into the back seat of a car on the way to Bramshott school. For some reason we always had to walk home though.

Re: Please Slow Down
- D (14th Jul 2020 - 08:08:59)

JP, so you went to Bramshott boy's school then? My sister was one of the very last to attend the girl's school (now the library as you know) prior to the building of Liphook Junior School in the early 70's. Where in Bramshott was the boy's school exactly? Teachers used to mention it frequently.

Re: Please Slow Down
- Russ Ellis (14th Jul 2020 - 13:45:18)

Well D I am surprised you don’t know where Bramshott School is I thought all the girls knew that an all boys school. If you look at my other contribution on the Radford thread about the book there is a map inside the front cover.

Linda Morris Yes all you say is quite correct but we have said the same for years. I moved to the Avenue in 1986 and I cannot remember how many meetings have taken place but nothing has been done. Yes one thing the crossing in Headley Road but again sold short it’s not a controlled crossing as we asked for very dangerous so I wish you luck. I’m afraid Ehdc and HCC don’t no where Liphook is.

Who are the people who take all these young goats to school, I think they must mean CHILDREN.

Re: Please Slow Down
- lIz (14th Jul 2020 - 16:17:52)

D The boys school was in Limes Close. The building is still there converted into housing.

Brian. I think they are only kidding.

- passfield resident (14th Jul 2020 - 18:05:47)

Going back to the beginning of this thread, virtually every time I go out I see someone speeding. The only answer is more enforcement . The idea that they might injure or kill someone isn't enough for some people-they need to be caught and hit in the pocket.
