New BMW Building
- R.H. (14th Jun 2020 - 22:14:12)

Does anyone else think that the new building currently under construction on the old Severn Thorns is an eyesore. How did the planners ever pass this in open country?

Re: New BMW Building
- paul (15th Jun 2020 - 00:22:26)

Hi,
Was not the previous building, with dubious local history, an eyesore for far to many years.
Barons BMW our investing for the future, and local employment.
It is a modern building fit for purpose, by a busy A road location.

- Bush (15th Jun 2020 - 05:50:35)

Yes. Money.

Re: New BMW Building
- Joe (15th Jun 2020 - 07:50:22)

It was built on the footprint of a derelict nightclub. Not really a business which the houses all around would encourage. Hopefully it will provide stimulus in the economy and business rates will be paid to the local district council. Better than keeping a derelict site.

Re: New BMW Building
- Jennifer (15th Jun 2020 - 10:06:27)

I agree, it's pretty hideous. It's too tall and totally out of keeping with its location. A blot on the landscape, definitely.

Go back in history the land around there was all army wooden buildings two world wars. The building next door was a little chef. You have garages in the New Forest you have retail parks way out in the country. This business will create jobs for local people not everyone wants to commute to.citys. There original site was right next door to the Devil’s punch bowl a scenic area. I wish them well.

Re: New BMW Building
- Bob (15th Jun 2020 - 10:26:03)

Yes a total blot. And to think that the a3 was so picturesque and serene before hand... shame really

Re: New BMW Building
- liz (15th Jun 2020 - 11:28:13)

Lifetime resident

What you say is true but it doesn't rule out a more sympathetic construction. I think even the second storey set further back would have been an improvement. Too late now though - we'll have to live with it!

Re: New BMW Building
- M (15th Jun 2020 - 11:45:57)

Standard BMW/Mini building which is a "brand building" for BMW.
Much better than what had been there for decades, that was definitely a blot on the landscape!
We should be thankful that a Company like Barons wants to invest locally and that they chose that site in our Parish to do it.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but it's a bit late to complain now, should have done it when the planning permission was being applied for.

Re: New BMW Building
- Rölli (15th Jun 2020 - 13:35:43)

M - quite agree

Re: New BMW Building
- Paul (15th Jun 2020 - 13:42:03)

Be fun getting onto A3 when doing test drive Don’t know how control work like indicators mind you don’t use them anyway just pull out accident waiting to happen

Re: New BMW Building
- liz (15th Jun 2020 - 16:16:58)

Paul - you are wrong. The indicators do work it's just that they are an optional extra!

Re: New BMW Building
- Dawn Hoskins (15th Jun 2020 - 20:19:03)

I've seen numerous cars drifting out of their lane as they are looking up at the windows and not paying attention to the road.

As far as the old argument ' its better than the eyesore it replaced' landowners deliberately let properties on landbank fall into disrepair so that locals will agree to 'anything' rather than looking at an eyesore.

- JH (17th Jun 2020 - 12:35:44)

BMWs don't have indicators ..... well, I've never seen a Beemer driver use them.

Blimey, never knew we had so many experts in Liphook.
Planners, Highways experts, architects?
Get building and crack on with the economic recovery.

Surely anything is better than this view?

Re: New BMW Building

Paul,
There are certain people out there that find fault in everything around here. From developing brown field sites to even building modern sustainable houses in Bordon.
It is mainly due to ego and ignorance.
Why anybody would object to re developing a site that has been derelict for 30 years plus on a Major A road is beyond me.
Why do people go on about peeps who drive BMW's, what's that's about?
Could go on but I leave that to someone else......

Re: New BMW Building
- Jennifer (18th Jun 2020 - 13:04:04)

Grant: - "Why anybody would object to re developing a site that has been derelict for 30 years plus on a Major A road is beyond me".

I don't object to the site being redeveloped per se, it's the design of the building itself that is objectionable. I think the development could have been a lot more easy on the eye. As it is, it's one of those "monstrous carbuncle" sort of buildings that are totally out of keeping with their surroundings.

Re: New BMW Building
- Grant (18th Jun 2020 - 14:38:17)

Like the Little Chef building ....
The building is designed to sell and showcase cars.

Re: New BMW Building
- liz (18th Jun 2020 - 17:42:06)

Grant

A building designed to sell and showcase cars does not have to be a blot on the landscape. Actually I don't think the building is that bad - it just needed stepping back a little - it's now an unsympathetic start to the Canadian Memorial Planting. And yes, there are architects, planners etc in Liphook, but but why do you need to be one to have an opinion?

Re: New BMW Building
- Antoinette (20th Jun 2020 - 11:54:02)

Having worked for BMW in the past I may be able to explain why BMWs do not have indicator lights. It's because they they don't need them. They come with built-in right-of-way...according to an old Bavarian joke. Sorry!

Re: New BMW Building
- Bob (20th Jun 2020 - 14:37:44)

I like it

Re: New BMW Building
- Karina (8th Jul 2020 - 14:52:55)

Actually I find it pleasing. A good example of modern functional architecture. I was pleasantly surprised that it is not a vast building dominating the surrounding countryside, or another example of ‘traditional’ architecture regurgitating Victorian/Georgian/Tudor features.

Re: New BMW Building
- LGR (8th Jul 2020 - 23:54:31)

I like it. Just a normal looking car dealership and showroom building..

Re: New BMW Building
- Pete (9th Jul 2020 - 12:45:00)

I like it.

Re: New BMW Building
- liz (9th Jul 2020 - 13:33:20)

Typical unimaginative car showroom design. Not offensive but not a particularly good start to the Canadian Memorial Planting or the scenic views.
