Cinema
- Doggo (9th Jun 2020 - 07:59:26)

Hi all. Anyone have any update on the cinema? I know it’s uncertain times but cinemas will be allowed to open eventually. Just wondered if it’s still in the pipeline or has been abandoned.

Still an eyesore in our lovely village....

I do hope it’s still going to happen.

Passing through the Square yesterday evening I couldn't help look at the state of the 'cinema' development and the eye-sore it has become.

I recently heard that it may also be having something of an impact on perception of the area to potential house buyers.

I've gone from being excited for Liphook when it was first announced what seems like a lifetime ago, to wondering if it will ever be finished (as in, ;really' finished not just words).

Maybe the owner of the site should be given a deadline to complete it or sell it, or to start compensating local businesses and residents in some way for the state of the centre of the town (probably impossible, but I think it's time the owner got on with it).

It is a shame it is taking so long but I live in hope that we will have our cinema soon.

As for the impact on property prices, I doubt it makes any difference. Unless you have been specifically told by a reputable estate agent that house prices have been reduced as a direct result of the physical appearance of the building, chalk this one up as no more than hearsay.

You were ticking along quite nicely there until I noticed "a reputable estate agent". Then it all fell down.

Re: Cinema
- Si (3rd Jul 2020 - 09:02:38)

We recently moved from Liphook and a local estate agent did tell us the state of the cinema, and other buildings in the town centre, were affecting house prices in the area.

I think they posted an update on their social media in the last few weeks saying some major barriers had at last been overcome, but I agree, action would speak louder than words.

The owner of the building does not appear to be the lady who put plans in for the cinema and associated developments, as seen on the thread regarding the trapped doves in the building. Cinemas are being allowed to re open on the 4th of July with pubs.

It does not seem likely to open this year with no activity on the site for many months now. I am sure if you put these questions on the Cinema website you may get an answer.

Re: Cinema

It is such a shame that the residents of Liphook have had to put up with two derelict looking buildings in the centre of our village for too long.

The old Motor Colours building on London Road has taken upwards of 10 years to be redeveloped by Arthur Lord Organs, but hopefully it's in it's final throws and we may see a new building built at the front this year......or maybe next year???

I do hope that the old Liphook Garage site/Cinema doesn't go down the same route.

It is such a shame that although the developer has great ideas, and a passion to push them through, they do appear to have missed the boat, and possibly not got proper backing for the scheme in the first place to accommodate all eventualities.
Covid-19 has now highlighted this shortcoming which is such a shame for everyone involved.

I wish her well, and hope she can push it through, but maybe it would be best to cut her losses, knock the building down and build a block of flats on the site, with maybe a shop or restaurant/bar on the ground floor?

Exactly the same thing should happen at the old Countrywide Store site too, before that too becomes a derelict eyesore.

Re: Cinema
- Anon (3rd Jul 2020 - 19:07:46)

Obviously no one knows how long the virus and it’s effects will be around for - but a cinema and a restaurant/cafe would both be difficult to see working currently. I would love to have a cinema here - and would use it under normal circumstances.

Hopefully they’ll get it going soon - it does look terrible and if planning needs to change for houses/flats then the whole process could drag on for another few years.

Re: Cinema
- Moviebuff (5th Jul 2020 - 08:19:32)

The cinema has had massive hurdles to overcome , if you follow them on fb you’ll see what they have had to deal with , hence the delays .
What with Lockdown etc , People in the village need to be a little more forgiving , I saw one Local resident really laying into them on social media the other day ( I must hasten to add that they were ranting on the Everyman cinema page which has no affiliation , so the rant was rather amusing because of that ) but was totally uncalled for and as for ‘ reputable estate agent ‘ saying that a rundown building would affect house prices .... well what a load of rubbish ... we should be supporting local people who are trying to breathe life back into our village not put them down all the time

Re: Cinema
- Sarah (5th Jul 2020 - 09:54:33)

I absolutely agree that we should be supporting new (and old) business ventures in Liphook and if all goes well a small cinema will be lovely. I do follow the cinema project on social media and am aware of the problems they have faced and their keenness to persevere, plus the local connections of the people running it.

I do think people have a right to express concern about the state of dereliction of a key building in what is a heritage square though. It really does look terrible and has been now for quite some time.

Some simple ‘Coming Soon’ posters in the window - perhaps the development plans themselves might sooth the concerns of local people and also anyone visiting the area?

To be fair, there are a few businesses in the area that could also look at the state of their own buildings - nothing expensive - a quick lick of paint on the external walls, some more sympathetic signage to what is a heritage square etc, would make the whole place look lovelier. The new architect building looks fab.

- Anon (5th Aug 2020 - 00:07:04)

Perhaps some more regular updates about the project would keep us all on side a bit more? It would be appreciated!

Seems to be some cars there most days now, fingers crossed it’s still on the cards

Re: Cinema
- Beef Wellington (27th Dec 2020 - 18:43:25)

Just wondered if anyone had any recent news on this?

Would love to see it get going for when we’re all allowed to do stuff again.

Re: Cinema
- Paul (29th Dec 2020 - 18:19:00)

Probably the worst time to build a cinema, then again as it's not built it might be possible to make it Covid-friendly from the outset.

But - even before Covid this was a total eye-sore in the village and there was little in the way of progress, and no updates locally that I could see.

Re: Cinema
- Local (29th Dec 2020 - 18:56:29)

Seems very funny they knock the building half down gut the other half but up a board fence and use the land as a yard. Is using it as yard compliant with the planning approval.

Re: Cinema
- Joe (30th Dec 2020 - 16:39:02)

The lady who started it up lives in Church Road Bramshott. The company " Living Room Cinema liphook Ltd " is registered with companies House. I do not think there has been much movement but perhaps there is no point in getting on with it until we are sure we are all safe from the virus.

Re: Cinema
- GT (30th Dec 2020 - 17:09:20)

Rupert Gavin looks to be bankrolling it. Claire Beswick is the local lady that would presumably run it.

Seems to be two ltd companies involved. One that will run the cinema and one that will own the building.

The property company changed its name in Nov 2020 so I guess things are still happening.

Would just be decent for Claire or someone to keep people updated about it as it really is an eyesore at the moment. Just a monthly quick update would be useful, even if it’s just ‘no news this month guys, we’re still watching what’s going on with the pandemic’.... otherwise they’re not really winning over the locals are they....
