Stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives
- er (8th Apr 2020 - 17:42:48)

That was the message today from the government briefing.

The Guardian is reporting that the UK is forecast to have the highest death toll in Europe, 3 times that of Italy or Spain.

Read this extract:

'Looking at the measures taken by the UK to curb the spread of the disease, the institute says the peak is expected in 10 days’ time, on 17 April. At that point the country will need more than 102,000 hospital beds, the IHME says. There are nearly 18,000 available, meaning a shortfall of 85,000.
The same grim picture applies to intensive care beds. At the peak, 24,500 intensive care beds will be needed and 799 are available, the analysts predict. There will be a need for nearly 21,000 ventilators, they say. At the peak the UK will see 2,932 deaths a day, the IHME forecasts'

WOW! And a few runners still passing walkers within 2 feet and vice versa!

I believe the supermarkets should operate a one way system in every aisle to stop the brain dead shoppers who are still lingering here and there, changing their minds and going back to look for a chianti mushroom sauce to go with their chicken fillets and aubergines, you should go in alone, with a list of essentials, take what you can get, leave and be grateful!

I could go on, but most people are doing great, it's just a few idiots. We have been told the police cannot police social distancing, the only way to do it is by public shaming, we need to keep calling out those who aren't trying, they are risking us all, especially the vulnerable and the key workers.

At the moment hospital staff are having to make tough choices about who they can and can't ventilate, I read only about 50% can be ventilated, this will get worse before it gets better, theses are tough times.

There are many more ventilators being made, it will take time (months) there are treatments being tested in Japan and China, they will hopefully come on line soon, then there will be a global scramble to get them, the richest and most devious countries will secure them first, I read the US has already told China to give them to them first, or there will be trade repercussions! Everyone is doing their best, we need to give our politicians, medical staff etc time to get these things in place.

We have gone through the containment, delay and toilet roll hoarding stages, now please keep being responsible and give vulnerable people the best chance! Thank you.

Sorry, it's not correct to simply say that NHS staff are having to make decisions about who to ventilate and who not to - without also mentioning that this is standard clinical practice and decision-making in operation.

It's always a balance between evidence-based medicine and doing no harm to each patient, and well before Covid19 clinicians were making this type of decision every day in every hospital.

You are an expert in this area then Paul?

Sorry, I have missed the bit stipulating that to comment on this thread one must be an expert on the subject.
Normally, in my humble opinion, contributors are allowed to share and reflect their experience in real life what what they have seen and learnt elsewhere. Readers are welcome to apply common sense.
Having said that, Liz, I wouldn't take everything that is said here as an absolute true authority to follow religiously.

We all know

Stop going on about it, go on facebook the coronavirus, go on Snapchat the coronavirus, go on Instagram the coronavirus. There's literally no place to escape this coronavirus stuff mentally. I might end up creating my own community where we don't go on about the coronavirus and focus on the positives instead of the negatives all the time.

I have to say (and this is based on my experience alone) - I feel that too many people are not taking this 'lockdown' seriously enough... Early this morning when I was in my garden, it sounded as though the A3 was much louder than it has been in recent days... And the cul de sac that I live in was full of car noises this afternoon.. I could be wrong - and I hope that I am - but it feels like complacency is setting in and that people feel that it won't be an issue for them or their nearest and dearest..

In answer to yet another posting from someone (Paul) who cannot grasp the point? Maybe he us too young to have the worry older people have. In normal times Paul, the decisions are not based on whether there are enough ventilators to go around. At the moment the health service is short of manpower and equipment, , which is why we have to observe the lockdown and respect that if we do not the virus will kill more people and our hard pressed NHS staff will get infected through thoughtless behaviour. I do believe that Paul is living in an alternate universe

That is my polite version.

No it’s not paul if you read I am telling people stay at home you only alound out for 30 min walk or bike ride not hours at a time with map finding new walks this family go out more than once a day more like 4 times a day
So shut up joe

Just on the back of this post in relation to the "who plays God scenario" - this is a reality for those in Spain and Italy. I have family in Spain who are currently isolated and advised that due to the increased elderly generation along with Italy, their healthcare system cannot cope. It really is not hard to stay at home and keep yourself isolated.

The posting from Paul mentioned the ventilators that is the post to which I am responding.
