Train Strike
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (4th Dec 2019 - 08:57:36)

As I write we are in the 3rd day of the Guards Strike on SWR. The strike is causing problems for all train users so lets all hope the guards with no pay for December have an unpleasant Christmas and un-prosperous New Year.
The only good point is the useless MD of SWR has been moved, and replaced, he has proved himself to be completely inept and unable to run an efficient railway franchise.

Seriously...?

They are striking for a reason. Don't be so stuck up. If their Managers weren't so stuck up with a similar personality to you then this won't happen.

I read that those on strike will be having their wages paid by the union.

Yellow Bannanna Adrian.
A completely unnecessary and unpleasant thing to say.
Either you’re playing the devils advocate, or you’ve been born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
The guards are striking so they don’t loose their jobs.

Re: Train Strike
- Julie (4th Dec 2019 - 23:12:56)

I get why they're striking but this has been going on for years now and the only people being inconvenienced is the passengers.

Re: Train Strike
- Common sense (5th Dec 2019 - 09:46:30)

I thought strikes could only go on so long and then they had to be decided by a third party. This strike is just ridiculous no one will lose their jobs they are just not taking on any more guards.I am afraid it looks very political . Trade Unions should Not be able to hold the people to ransom.

I represent Deaf vulnerable adults on a regular basis who suffer immense problems when using public transport which often borders on illegal discrimination.

They can often be stranded at 'wrong' platforms as last-minute changes are announced on tannoy systems only, can often board wrong trains for the same reason and are often the subject of late-night ridicule and abuse by drunken revellers who think that sign language is a comedy show to which they must interject. Don't even get me started on cancellations and bus replacements as then they are completely stranded.

If there was no guard on the trains it would make their travel almost 100% impossible. As they have such anxiety about public transport (through personal experiences) they need the reassurance that if they have problems that a guard is available to assist them.

It is not just the Deaf that are vulnerable, I often travel alone at night on my way back from giving Legal Compliance training around the country. Most stations are dark and unmanned both in the ticket offices and car parks. If there was no guard on the train as well as no humans at the start of the journey or at the end - that would greatly concern me as a single lady travelling alone. How long ago was it since that poor man was stabbed whilst travelling with his teenage son by a drugged-up idiot? How long would you lay dying in an empty carriage if there was no guard?

I fully support the strikes and the onus should be on the government to lay down the law. Public transport is not a luxury, it is a necessity and as such the government should draw a line under this and read the riot act to the penny-pinching train companies trying to put profits over safety. It has gone on too long - but only because the guards are right to pursue it and the general population support them.

Number of points here

1/ If Corbyn gets in get used to Unions being back in control and causing misery and disruption. After 5 years we will end up with another Margaret Thatcher!
2/ SWT is a dysfunctional business with inept managers; combined with radical left union members a recipe for public misery
3/ Ignore Adrian, his posts on SWT are completely self centred, I recall him having a rant about how inconvenienced he was by service disruption caused by a suicide and blaming SWT

Yes let’s get a Maggie to sort this country out. If we let this loony labour lot in god help us.

Re: Train Strike
- er (5th Dec 2019 - 21:12:46)

What are you lot on? How are the Tories going to make trains better? It's already been privatised! If this is about guards, then you'd think Labour and the unions will protect the service best, mind you it's all irrelevant you lot are so confused, these are private companies now running ex public services (is NHS next?), the workers are not public servants (any more) so if they are willing to give up pay for something they believe in, a privatised system, it's really outside of government control now!

Surely there are some rules in this forum, hasn’t anyone noticed that banana man is flaming everyone?

@Pete - good points. Best to never reply to any of his posts, he'll get fed up and vanish eventually. I hate that I've replied to this (!) but if we all ignore him he will go away.

PS - if he replies, I won't be bothering to read it or reply :)

Pete, the only rules on this forum seem to be "editors discretion". I had some particularly nasty comments when I objected to the carnival road closures. A few weeks later somebody on this website was ridiculed when they made an urgent appeal for a powered wheelchair, by his/her own admission subsequent comments attacking the person mocking the disabled person were censored by the editor. No connection between the two but one was thrown to the trolls and one was not. Referring to the powered wheelchair thread, I am surprised the editor saw fit to publish a post ridiculing a disabled person.

- Editor (6th Dec 2019 - 13:09:20)

Hi D

Yes you are correct, the main rule on this site is editors discretion.

I suggest you re-read the thread - 'Wheelchair'.

There was no ridicule of the disabled person. Just a tongue in cheek comment about the wording of the OP.

I guess you were referring to comments in this thread Liphook Carnival Litter Pick

Or did you mean Great carnival where you say "Interesting how those who threw the worst are now hiding behind their keyboards."

But I don't believe you ever use your own name on TalkBack. But not for discussion on this thread.

Alan

Re: Train Strike
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (6th Dec 2019 - 20:09:47)

I stand by my original comments.

However I would like to get some facts which some people are unaware off:

1 - No guards will lose their jobs. In fact extra guards will be employed.
2 - The only change is to the new trains which they don't have yet, and are only on short distance Surburban routes(These start at Guildford)

When and if the changes take place the guards will no longer have to open and close doors, which I can remember doing myself a number of years ago.

The guards are not going but over the next 30 years the jobs may change and evolve, lets be honest can anyone say that over 30 years their job role hasn't changed.
