Liphook carnival ignorance for local businesses
- Jo (22nd Sep 2019 - 14:13:07)

I have recently been trying to contact Liphook carnival to see if they would be interested in a burger van.But I have been ignored for the second year running. Considering Liphook carnival is suppose to support local businesses & organisations but sadly does not seem to be the case no longer .

I have had similar issues , I mainly focus out of area events .

I don’t believe this would be the case!. Have you tried calling or Emailing the committee?.

Hi Jo & R,
Please call me on my mobile to discuss the queries regarding burger vans. Thank you, if I don’t answer, as I also run my own business in Liphook, pls leave a message & I will call you back. We are always looking for new members to join our Committee to make sure you have a voice & input in our local community. You would be very welcome. Sally Cameron, Chairperson Liphook Carnival & Bonfire Committee. Mb: 07717 313440

Liphook carnival is a charity event. I don’t believe they would ever turn down local business. I believe local business is the heart of Liphook carnival. The committee do a wonderful job and work awfully hard. So please be a little more understanding that everything the committee do is in support of the local community.

Hi all

Sadly the commitee are in the dark ages, not wanting to change to 2019. Sadly myself and a dear friend have seen another carnival shut down as they didnt listen to fellow commitee members ideas and knowledge.

yes they do a good job but every year Karen says "its the last ever carnival" and it has to be front page of the local herald and post. its getting old, we do need to change a few things and yes i agree again, the commitee does a good job but when they have their meetings there is little in the way of clear communication of what is happening and when the meetings are. a meeting around a table for 8 which allows no space for other to attend, or wanted

i do hope the 2019 carnival is good as I really dont want to see it end,

all the best

Steve, you might be in the dark ages, Karen left a couple of years ago. In my opinion the carnival has gone from strength to strength under Sally’s leadership. The current committee is large with people of all ages from a varied back, there are a couple of the oldies hanging in for good measure, but generally it’s quite a forward thinking, vibrant bunch!

Such a shame some people use forums like this to be negative about volunteers trying hard to do something for the community.
Sad.

Imagine f they put as much effort into helping on the committee as they do being critical about it?

I bet when asked to join they come up with a million excuses not too?

Been on a few committees myself always those that shout loudest do nothing to help.

I believe there should be more focus down the recreation ground or towards the station.......The square is to crowded .

- Mandi (4th Oct 2019 - 05:34:01)

I remember the carnival 50 years ago at the railway yard such a big event back then.We would have the kids fancy dress standing at the osu reception and then down the rec for fireworks and a toffee apple, good old days.

Completely agree with Josh. It's dead as a dodo by the time it gets to Station Road

Stop moaning and volunteer to help, without volunteers none of these sort of events would even exist.

Three cheers for the volunteers

The rec wouldn't be good, too dark and muddy if it rains. How about Sainsbury's car park (if Sainsbury's would lend it out of communal spirit, the roads are closed anyway). They would still get loads of footfall, if they kept the café open for teas they'd make a killing. Plus the route could be shorter (square to station road loop) and with loads going on at Millennium green it would all be more compact and yet not cramped (I know I'm a genius), or my tuppence worth anyway.

Nah you should sell at the recreation ground, there will be stoners who will have the munchies and will pay ANYTHING for food.

Judging by the forecast, selling umbrellas might be a good little earner

Re: Liphook carnival ignorance for local businesses
- Liphook Carnival Committee (25th Oct 2019 - 17:37:54)

Hi Debbie,

London Road is closed 9-10pm due to the fireworks in Radford Park.

Tower Road is closed on the night. The Co-op end of Tower Road opens at 9pm. The London Road end of Tower Road remains closed until 10pm.

Having lived in the village for the last 20 years I remember going to the Carnival when I first moved here and it was a much busier affair and there seemed to be more going on. I went last year and thought it was pretty pathetic, the floats were great but that was about it.

Re: Liphook carnival ignorance for local businesses
- D (25th Oct 2019 - 23:25:56)

Having lived in Liphook for 50 years, I remember when we used to have a celebrity crown the carnival queen:- John Noakes; Mike Reid; Brian Murphy; Trevor Baker; Peter Clark, to name but a few. There were more floats then to a better standard and more people turning out, strange when the population of Liphook was less. I can't go tomorrow because I'm working as no doubt other Liphook residents will be, and I will have to add several miles to my journey home because of the evening curfew. Time it was knocked on the head.

Oh you miseries, get down there if you can. As a town gets bigger and bigger the community gets smaller and smaller, plus kids would rather spend 100 quid on a ticket to see Stormzy or Ariana than go to a free event, it must be a thankless task putting on a free local event when we are all so modern and sophisticated we want bangs and laser light shows and things that float down from behind a mist of fog of smoke whilst Madonna belts out a tune to a backdrop of a fire breathing dragon, but this is Liphook, just open your door and walk down there for a bit!

Ariana? Mad Donna? No, PET SHOP BOYS!

- Resident (26th Oct 2019 - 14:18:15)

Oh you miserable bunch?! Where is the community spirit? It’s a free event that the kids (and most adults) enjoy!! A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes for YOUR benefit- stop being so ungrateful! So what if you have to make a slight detour due to the community enjoying themselves (for those who will attend to support it)... life is too short to moan and groan all the time. Just make the most of what is being put on for the community and let those who want to enjoy it do just that!! If you don’t want to participate then get some cocoa and find something on the tv to watch or settle down with a good book. The carnival happens each year and each year we get people moaning about it. Put your moaning energy into something good for the community - you never know you might enjoy it!!!

Have a fantastic carnival Liphook :) xx

I run a business that does candy stalls and side stalls etc. And even though I did contact Liphook carnival for a pitch , I was declined but events work like this . 80% of my work has been north Hampshire/ Waverley . East Hampshire doesn’t have many big events like carnival so many businesses do try to join in but with limited space and similar traders they cannot really allow any business to come and join in . Many businesses have been working with the carnival for many years . I understand it can be frustrating for local businesses but Its business at the end of the day .

Re: Liphook carnival ignorance for local businesses

Liphook carnival needs to expand with the village!. Yes there is a fun fair & a few Burger vans but this is leaving local businesses at a disadvantage. I think the Liphook carnival committee do a Top job but all I see is the funfair and outside businesses making the money.
