More chaos in the square
- Jean (20th Jun 2019 - 17:55:44)

I have just read in the paper that the 2 large buses that bring 180 pupils to Bohunt School are going to be replaced in September and pupils will be given train passes. Great I thought that should help the traffic during school times. But then it hit me. Another 180 children crossing the square at school times which is already a nightmare will cause utter chaos. I know there is a footpath route built specially for pupils which goes through Fletchers Field and pass the church centr which avoids the square but I have never seen many pupils using it.

They do not use it because it doesnt go near the shops

Oh dear! Grumble grumble Jean! Better that the students are walking, getting exercise and using public transport, than getting lifts in parents cars! Some people are never happy....

Maybe it's time to do away with the zebra crossing, there's plenty of crossing points.

The zebra crossing through the middle of the square seems to be the main cause of traffic jams through the village from my observations. It really should be looked at, perhaps crossings on Haslemere road and one on Headley road nearer the square and you'd have crossings on all the roads around. The trouble with the one on the "square" is that if you stop traffic there, you stop it on all the incoming roads, you often end up with traffic jams 1/4 of a mile long at rush hours, it is crazy.

Having got off the train twice this week at Bohunt exit time I literally am amazed how the students take up the whole northbound platform, throw bags each other, generally mucking around oblivious that passengers are trying to exit the station and are forced to walk perilously close to the edge to get past. This will only get worse.

Yes they do use the footpath near church centre , because when I pick my son up i wait in church centre and see pupils walking by , but really live near a school expect to see children walking through the village , drive near a school at 9 or 3.30 expect more traffic .

Here's an idea - leave for work earlier and stay abit later. That should ease the congestion.

So Julie wants to do away with the zebra crossing. Yes that is really sensible that is. Just so cars can get to their destination quicker.!!!!!. I walk to work. I walk because I don't own a car. So no I don't think that would be a good idea. It's bad enough trying to cross the road in the mornings as it is. Car drivers are always giving me dirty looks because I have had the cheek to press the button because I want to cross the road. Most of them ignore the green light and don't stop because they are too busy txting or trying to control little Harry and little Sophie in the back seat!!!. So they are not going to stop to let me across the road at other crossing points are they Julie.

I think Julie means the crossing by the Hungry Horse.

Its very simple, replace Zebra crossing with Pelican crossing. The issue is that at school run times the kids just stream across the Zebra crossing with no gaps so traffic then builds up. With gaps enforced by pelican crossing traffic lights cars will flow through more smoothly

Green light means go!

Several years ago when I was a Parish Councillor I attended a meeting with County Councillor Ferris Cowper, District Councillors Bill Mouland and Angela Glass and a representative of Hampshire Highways.

The meeting was held in the Square from 7.45am to 09.20 am, peak period during term time. All agreed that the pedestrian crossing outside the Hungry Horse was a major contributor to traffic congestion.

Bohunt students crossed in one continuous line so that traffic having cleared the roundabouts outside Lloyds Bank and at the juncture of Longmoor Road, Headley Road and London Road became gridlocked for long periods.

All felt that the discipline of a button operated Pelican crossing would ensure that pedestrians would cross at specific times allowing vehicles to pass through the square rather than stop / go as individuals and small groups dawdled across.

This proposal was sent to Hampshire Highways for their consideration but was subsequently turned down because they felt that it would slow the passage of vehicular traffic.

Lollipop man / woman / LGBTQ would solve the problem.

The problem with extra bohunt children on the train is their behaviour on the trains, they need to learn some manners and if they go in a quiet carriage they need to KEEP QUIET AND SHUT UP.
