Hindhead Tunnel
- Sideshow BoB (19th Apr 2019 - 17:57:04)
Hi
What is the correct speed limit thorough the tunnel and is overtaking allowed
Ta
| | Unless signed otherwise it is the national speed limit 70mph. Overtaking is allowed in the tunnel. The ‘lane control’ signs refer to the cross and tick over the lanes, it does not mean ‘stay in lane’. |

The hindhead tunnel is a great example of how people have little knowledge of the road and law. People are constantly slowing down then staying in lane and this is a recurring problem and shows peoples driving incompetence and arrogance and that fact that as soon as they leave the tunnel they will then break the speed limit anyways makes it even more ridiculous and pointless.

70mph except if you are driving a transit size van in which case it's only 60 - not that many van drivers seem to be aware of this.

Think of the tunnel as simply a dual carriageway. The fact that it has a roof over it makes no difference at all.

I'm always amazed at how many people slow down to 50 when the signs are very clear all the way through?
Sometimes, obviously, the speed signs are lowered, etc, but otherwise, the speed signs are every fifty yards or so and lit up like Christmas trees!
That big round sign with a diagonal stripe through it...... Can you imagine if they set a ''''National Speed Limit''' and then had it being a different speed for every different type of road [and tunnel]? What a laugh that would be... the very point of a National Limit is that every person will know what it is on every road that is not indicated otherwise.
For cars, 'national speed limit' means a limit of 60mph on single carriageway roads and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways [lorries and vans it's less].

I drove through yesterday and BOTH lanes were stuck behind vehicles doing 50.
Infuriating that:
a) they don't recognize the national speed limit signage, and
b) that they don't pull over into the inside lane to let people who want to drive at the regular [legal] speed to go past them!
