Nigel Marr Memorial Bench
- Anon (19th Feb 2019 - 14:08:47)

A couple of years ago i donated to a justgiving account that was set up to, as it stated, place a memorial bench for the ex chairman of the football club at the recreation ground. Before i donated i checked at the council offices that this would be allowed and was told it had been passed at a meeting.

My rant, i have been made aware that this said bench has now been, sadly, sited in radford park ! I feel i have been duped. This is not what i donated to.

I have asked and the council were asked for permission to site it there instead.

Why ????

Shocking!

This is very disturbing as I too also made a donation to the Justgiving page to provide a bench at the Football Club in memory of a gentleman who was an integral part of the development of the football club.

Why has this been sited away from the place that Mr Marr loved and looked on as his home, I am sure this is not what he would have wanted.

There are some questions to be answered here and I am sure that there are many others who donated in good faith who are horrified by this.

Hello Anon,
Thank you so much for bringing attention to the fact that my Dad’s memorial bench has been installed today, and already bringing joy to people in Radford Park.

It is true that the original plan was to install the bench at the Rec, and due to certain developments, this has not been able to happen. Without going into too much detail here, if anyone needs specifics, they are welcome to call me on 07763634092. Anyone who feels ‘duped’ is welcome to have their money back, although the remainder of the money is due to be donated to The British Heart Foundation.

It may not be to the original plan, but I feel the bench honours my Father’s memory beautifully, and brings help and joy to the people of Liphook, just as he did. Maybe we could celebrate that instead? It’s been a very difficult few years for my family, and many others who lost this great man, and the bench finally being installed has brought great peace.

Why don’t we focus on that instead of a small relocation? As soon as the concrete dries I welcome you all to take a moment at the bench and remember the legacy my Dad left in the village.

Well said Grace. The important thing is that your fathers memory is honoured. People online are way to quick to jump to conclusions and they never look at the bigger picture.

I will visit the bench and I hope it offers all who knew him comfort.

Hi Grace and Anon

I am currently the president of the football club but I was a mere football team manager when Nigel was chairman of the club and I have fond memories of him. Just to set the record straight, at our last monthly committee meeting, we decided to install a memorial bench at the recreation ground ourselves after having heard from the Parish Council that there was a change to the original plan.

I have no wish to engage in any politics regarding this as the main aim from Anon appears to address the point of Nigel's memorial bench being in a place that he loved.

This was unanimously agreed at the last meeting (a few weeks ago) and a bench has now been ordered and will have a memorial plaque on it also. I hope that this will make sure that all money raised still goes to The British Heart Foundation, a charity equally close to my own heart. The cost will be completely covered by the football club.

I hope that Nigel's children; Grace, Olivia and Luke will be happy that we have taken this decision and that many people can sit with Nigel's spirit on the 'North Bank' at the Rec for many years to come. I, for one, will be there.

I watched them installing it this morning and thought what a lovely spot. As a newcomer I had no idea who he was.

Thank you for letting us newbies know who he was and what he did for Liphook.

Wow I am truly shocked, to anon and concerned I would just like to say this, how low can you get?!

You feel you have been “duped”, and it is “disturbing” I feel you should get a life.

You talk about what Nigel would have wanted, yet you make his passing even more hurtful on his poor children by putting something like this on a public forum? Ask anybody that knew Nigel his children were the most important thing to him, and he would’ve been truly disgusted by this!!! How dare you!!!!

I first met Nigel when he first moved to the village over 20 years ago and he was involved with far more than just the football club, the millennium hall and opening a shop in the town to name but a few.

I donated to this bench, quite a considerable amount may I add, not that I’m looking for a pat on the back, and I can say I am not in the slightest horrified by this and I say that if you are then you need a stern reality check.

Grace may I also add if anybody truly is low enough to ask for their money back please do name and shame them for taking money away from a charity that gave so much to Nigel in the final few years of his life.

I would also like to say Liphook talkback this should not be up on here! If you have that much of an issue with this bench, talk to his poor children face to face rather than being such a low life and posting here. I am truly disgusted with this behaviour and send my absolute love to Grace, Luke Olivia and Beth.

Jon
How nice to hear that the Football Club are installing a Bench in memory of Nigel. His heart and soul was in the Football Club and it is good that his friends and family have somewhere to go and reminisce about his good times supporting Liphook United.
He was truly a great man and the contribution he made to the football club should not be forgotten.

Sorry to say but this is what happens when you do these things you get people for and against - that's life.

I have lived in the village for nearly sixty years and I have been involved with Liphook Football Club not Liphook United Football Club and during that time the club has had some very good chairman and they have not been honoured with a bench Mr. Eric Jackson and Mr. Fred Mason come to mind and I know these two gentlemen did as much for Liphook Football Club as anyone has ever done including the late Mr. Nigel Marr.
