Gurkha Chautari
- Tim (12th Feb 2019 - 20:55:10)

Hi.

Does anyone know what’s happened to Gurkha Chautari. Sign on the door says technical fault but it’s been shut a long time. We miss it, used to go a lot. Great food there at a reasonable price.

Hope they haven’t folded.

Funny you should say that Tim. I had plans to go there at the weekend. Tried phoning and it says this number is no longer in service. Doesn’t look good.
As you say good food at reasonable prices.

They had a cashflow problem, what I hear is that owner has returned to his home country.

Real shame, food was brilliant, fresh, light and so nice after me-too Indian restaurants. However their marketing was Non-Exec and hence they just didn't get the footfall

It has been closed for about six weeks.

I put on talkback sometime ago that it was never very busy and I said then too all the locals USE IT OR LOSE IT and it looks like the later.

A shame.

Just goes to show there is more to running a restaurant than simply serving up delicious food.

Always great food but for time now it seemed to struggle to pull in the punters.

As a regular user since 2001 I was pleased when it opened after the last closure and phoned for a delivery. They had decided not to include this as part of the service for some reason, surely a mistake as from what I was told by the previous driver this was a large part of the income.
I phoned in and picked up a meal and was really disappointed by it. As it was a different chef the meal would be different I was told which is true so I changed to another selection which was also not very good. I went in a week or so later and made my feelings known and got a complimentary meal. The service was at all times spot on and the owner was really friendly but unfortunately this meal also was not very good so I stopped using it for a while.
I had been intending to go back in the last few weeks but the closed signs have gone up. A real loss to the village but, I feel they did play a large part in their own demise.

Unfortunately, we (landlords) have had to repossess the shop and flat due to non-payment of rent.
Lovely people, however they weren’t managing to sustain their business for a long time. We tried to help, but it wasn’t enough.
We will be working hard to find appropriate tenants.

If you can’t cook a simple curry at home then you can always get a Stainsbury’s readymeal or enjoy a juicy steak at the Anchor.

Agree with SGM, a few years back the food was amazing. I used to try and go with my wife every now and then. However, after the ownership change the food was inferior and it just wasn't worth it anymore.

Always very sad when any business fails. Fingers crossed that a new business moves in and is a success.

This restaurant has not been as pleasing since March 2013, when Sudha Rai and Mani sold it to concentrate on their Grayshott site.
The earlier Nepalese dishes were then replaced by a fusion with Indian cooking.
After that the number of customers reduced rapidly.

A juicy streak at The Anchor - you must be joking.. The one I purchased last week was tougher than old boots.

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Adrian (18th Feb 2019 - 21:34:44)

I always give my false choppers a good old sharpen before I nosh on a steak. It’s s shame the Anchor is now the last fine dining establishment for salt of the earth types

Hi Sarah. Completely understand but it is such a shame, speak to madhuban to see if they want to open a dine in branch in Liphook!

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Grant (19th Feb 2019 - 13:08:35)

No thanks to the Madhuban.
How about a restaurant that serves fresh food rather than pre prepared junk.

Sorry about the closure, have had some nice meals there, however it would be really great if an Italian restaurant opened in Liphook. It would make a nice alternative from the Indian, Chinese or Thai food available at the moment.

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Neil (6th Mar 2019 - 18:54:51)

As long as it’s not more chain Italian garbage.

What about a good old English pies, steak and chips / fish and chips restaurant. It would better suit this part of the village which is rather scruffy looking and stuck in the 1970s. We need to get back to proper stodge food non of this foreign muck. We need more affordable joints like the anchor to hang out in our string vests. The big juicy steaks on steak night are belching delicious

On a serious note, it does not have to be another restaurant there could be changed into another use? if it is going to be another restaurant, I went to a new thai restaurant in Alton near to the cinema there, it was really lovely all freshly cooked nothing bought in, not cheap but a good experience, hope something like that goes in there.

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- SteveA (7th Mar 2019 - 00:04:31)

We've already got an excellent Thai restaurant in the village at the Green Dragon - I don't really think we need another one.

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- liz (7th Mar 2019 - 09:12:49)

We have Thai - but no Italian. A decent Italian bistro would be great!

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- john (7th Mar 2019 - 10:37:27)

I agree the green dragon is good, I have tried both and they are vastly different. We have the Italian chain restaurants in Haslemere. A good greek restaurant would also be welcome!

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Rölli (7th Mar 2019 - 11:15:07)

Anything as long as its not;

Hairdresser
Charity shop
Estate Agent

Personally I think it could work as a wine bar type place along the lines of The Townhouse in Petersfield. Alternatively a proper traditional Indian Restaurant that's open on Fridays and Saturday nights until midnight

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Ann (7th Mar 2019 - 12:59:25)

A newsagents would be good - just like we used to have years ago.

Re: Gurkha Chautari
- Adrian (7th Mar 2019 - 15:44:46)

Estate Agents would be good or green grocers that sell yellow bananas. Any news on the vacant site near the station? Is the bail hostel still coming there?
