Prince Phillip moment probably! Witnessed a geriatric driver scrape down the side of a car in Midhurst Road car park yesterday, absolutely oblivious to the impact and damage and just drove off (details noted and left on damaged car).
With an ageing population we need to be realistic and accept our faculties decline, so I think those over 75 really should take an annual competency test to retain their licences

Well shame on them. Never mind the car, fancy not reading Liphook Talkback!
Rolli - wish you'd been around when our car was hit.

Although it doesn't help you Liz, my car was hit whilst I was sitting in it some years ago in Sainsbury's car park. The elderly lady who reversed into me said that she hadn't hit my car despite the rather large red mark (and dent) from her car on my blue car. She also refused to give her insurance details as 'she had shopping to get on with'.
It did get sorted in the end but one of the Sainsbury's employees in the petrol station advised me not to use the car park on a Thursday as it was apparently the worst day for older drivers colliding with other vehicles. I have taken this on board since, maybe they are all after the green bananas (or bannanas) on a Thursday :-)

The general tone of the correspondence is older drivers = poorer drivers.
I have driven over 1 million (yes million) miles in my driving lifetime and as a 65 year old am now referred to as "elderly". I can assure the readers of this correspondence that age usually has little to do with driving ability.
Poor eyesight and judgement can happen at any age. I have seen drivers of all ages texting, phoning, eating, putting makeup on, combing hair, driving recklessly, etc etc.
I certainly acknowledge Liphook has its fair share of elderly drivers, some probably suffering from poor eyesight and early dementia. However, having seen John Surtees driving fast at Goodwood in his 80s I can assure the readers age can have nothing to do with poor driving.
In practical terms ALL drivers should have to prove their eyesight is good (regular eye tests), are medically fit, and friends / relatives / doctors should be encouraged to make sure ageing drivers are still fit to drive. Legislation is clearly needed here.
It doesn't help the lady who had her car damaged but I too have witnessed a clearly incompetent driver (elderly) hit another car in a local car park. I left a note on the windscreen of the hit car to allow them to pursue the driver. I urge others to do the same. Remember the driver may well be confused with early dementia and be unable to remember what to do next. Pretending nothing happened and driving away is the easiest way of them dealing with it. Helping a hit driver take action by being a witness (note on windscreen) may be the first steps to taking a medically unfit driver off the road and preventing much more serious future accidents. Driving the wrong way down a motorway anyone?
Please remember though that fairness is key to all this and simply because someone is older / younger does not mean they are better / worse drivers!
