The state of UK politics
- Editor (28th Nov 2018 - 10:00:00)

Hi

I'm moving the general politics discussion from the thread "Liphook Herald: Jerrard did bully other councillors " to here.

Jane, thank you - as mentioned, happy to be educated.

But - it's not a great list is it? Maintenance and upkeep - while greatly welcomed - well, I'd expect that to be done really.

Grants - excellent. Well done to those who have put in the hard work.

But I'm still trying to quantify the value for money for having this structure at all. Would we be better off without it? Is it more trouble (look at it's history) than it's worth? Is it just another tier of government but lacking real teeth / accountability / value for the local tax payer?

As an ordinary Joe resident, I'm just waiting on the Parish Council to wow me with all the good things they've done - currently they seem to have a massive brand / reputation issue and I for one am not won over. I'm just trying to understand.

@ Paul - The same could be said for our national government, in fact the whole political system, both national and local is not fit for purpose.

Mind you, it will only get worse once the Millennial generation come of age. Will take self obsessed and self serving politicians to a whole new level.

Rolli

Millennials are 21-38 approx. They have come of age - quite a while ago some of them!

Re: The state of UK politics

Liz, yet they still have not contributed anything postive to the nation! How long will it actually take them to mature!

Rolli
Perhaps it would assist others to understand your point if you gave a few examples of other (presumably older) individuals who have in your view contributed 'something positive to the nation'

Margaret Thatcher!

Hmm yes I thought that you might say that. Personally I couldn't stand her, a sentiment that I now feel for Donald Trump! David Cameron is a close candidate to join them as a result of his nonsensical referendum which has landed us all in our current mess.

I try not to get too worked up about posts on this site but as I have four sons (of whom I am immensely proud) who fall broadly within the age range mentioned above I struggle to accept the broad generalisation that their generation is significantly lacking compared to those of us of more advanced years. From my perspective they, their partners and their many friends are very hardworking and extremely pleasant people.

It may be that you have had a less positive experience of that generation but I still see no reason for you to be so scornful.

Good recovery Rolli but it doesn't change my view that you don't really have any idea what you are talking about. Mrs Thatcher didn't even become leader of the Conservatives until she was about 50 so I suggest the Millennials have some time yet!

Re: The state of UK politics

Name one millennial that has positively contributed to British politics?

Most political parties have had in the past up and coming "young guns" bringing fresh energy, political creativity and some future hope to the country. As far as I can see we have no-one on the horizon that is remotely inspiring

As Liz said, give the millennials a chance. Can you name someone who contributed to British Politics when he/she actually was a millennial. Three names names spring to my mind - Winston Churchill who became Home Secretary when he was 36 but didn’t achieve greatness until 1939 when he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty at the beginning of the Second World War – he actually had made some appalling mistakes in the intervening years and crossed the floor twice – William Pitt the Younger who became Prime Minister at the age of 24. Duke of Wellington who became Prime Minister at the age of 39 having had a distinguished military career before that. I think in those days they started younger. Rolli, can you name any?

As a Millennial (well probably more a Xennial actually) I did type a long response detailing a couple of examples of the way folk of my era are put down unnecessarily by older folk (which presumably includes Rölli). Then I thought there wasn't much point in actually posting it because it'll just get put down and continue the argument. Sums it up really why we can't be bothered to engage...

If you want to look for someone in the Millennial generation who has tried to make a positive contribution then you should look up the maiden speech in the house of commons of Scottish MP Mhairi Black - I'm not saying that you may agree with her views but you can't deny she has passion and is trying hard to work for what she believes.
