Car Key Jammers operating in Liphook
- John (12th Nov 2018 - 08:53:40)

A number of cars have been found open/unlocked on London road, seems a signal jammer is in operation which stops your key fob locking allowing the thieves to return at night to go through your unlocked cars.

Please check your car is locked after you use the key fob,

Yeah that sounds about right
They obviously tried to get into our bmw last night but spooked by my dog, I went out and the driver door was open after I know I had locked the car.
Had a mooch about and no sign of anyone.
Keep your eyes open for vehicles hanging about looking into drives etc as one was seen outsdide ours a day before.
My dog is never wrong about someone on the drive.

If you have a car with a keyfob to open/start your car then theives can likely open it and even start it without holding your keys.

Thieves use equipment available online to amplify the signal from your car’s keyfob in your house to the car. The car then thinks the keyfob is close by. To help prevent this you need to block your car’s keyfob signal. When not in use place your car’s keyfob and any spare keyfobs into a metal box or wrap in tin foil. You can also buy pouches to blook your car’s keyfob signal similar to the ones used to protect contactless cards.

Thieves may also have a key jammer. A device they leave hidden near where you park your car to stop the doors locking. So always check your car’s doors have actually locked before leaving it.

It's not just at the moment that you try to lock your car, it is also after you have got in and chucked the keys in the bowl (on the hook).

With these new jamming devices they only need to be in the vicinity of your keys and their readers will simply unlock your doors by reading the signal emitted from your fob.

This is why they work in teams so one has to approach your door and the other hangs around outside by the car.

Put your keys in the fridge or the microwave if you have a valuable vehicle or keep tools in your vehicle.

The 'relay attack' only affects cars with 'keyless' entry systems, where just approaching the car with the key will unlock it. If you car has this feature check with the manufacturer if it can be turned off. If not keep both keys in any form of metal container.

Could this be what I encountered in the car park by Lloyds chemist this afternoon? Went to click the key fob in the usual way to lock the car and it did not work. Tried again and still did not work. Tried spare key fob which was fortunately in my bag - still did not lock. Risked it and ran to the chemists leaving the car unlocked and was fortunate in nothing happening while I was away. Drove home and car locked as normal outside my house !! Was there a jamming device in the car next to mine ? And no ! the battery in my key fob is ok.

Would be interesting to know if it is only PKE (Passive Keyless Entry) equipped cars that are affected. Because I understood even cars with push button key fobs for door opening and keyless push button start are still potentially at risk. If the thief can gain entry the amplified signal will still start the car without the key being present?
Also on a BMW (I have had two broken into) smashing a window did not set off the car’s alarm. The thief seemingly can quickly reach in and steal valuables without the alarm sounding. So beware of this and never leave valuables on show in a car.

There have been so many car thefts and also thefts from vans in the last month or so - it has to be a concerted effort by a gang of thieves with hi-tech technology.
No local police = mini-crime spree.
I expect they're the same lot who do all the cashpoints locally.

Or invest in a steering wheel lock.

Jayne - that would be using low tech technology to defeat high tech technology :-)

If your car has keyless entry and it can’t be turned off, a steering lock is not a totally silly idea.

Yes, a simple old-fashioned steering lock would at least stop them from taking the car as well as the possessions inside it.

Petersfield was targeted last night with lots of cars ransacked and left with open doors - despite the owners knowing that they locked the vehicles up.

As Christmas approaches, I expect there will be a big demand for 2nd hand satnavs, CD players and any other devices left in vehicles!

Another option is to wait in your car with a bat!!!

Steering lock bars might deter a break in. But they are easily removed by hand tools as the actual lock points are often a weak point. A 1980s Disklok is probably the most secure option available and maybe worth investing in. It covers the entire steering wheel and has a high security lock. To remove a Disklok quickly the thief will likely need a power tool to cut it.

Howie has a point, we rely too much on computer tech for our security it seems really advanced and sci fi to many of us, yet to teenagers it's just another challenge to get past. I hear you can buy electronic key reading devices and cloners for a few pounds and they can actually stand behind you in a shop and clone your keys and contactless bank card in seconds.

So far I've heard wrap your car keys, or is that car fob, in tin foil or lock them in a metal box, (bear in mind any slight gap in the tin foil might negate your efforts completely) so maybe do both and hide the box under your bed, invest in a hefty iron 1980s set of steering wheel locks/covers. We've tried to make our lives simpler (I think I'll pass on keyless internet controlled front door for now thanks!) it seems the old ways are still often the best as the oldies know!

I wondering if this jamming leaves sticky door Handles.?
Will I get accused of drug sniffing with all this tin foil in my pocket?

You can get Faraday bags on Amazon for about £10.
That's probably the most simple and inexpensive option.

About £10 delivered unless you have prime in which case your delivery is free I think?

OR - maybe a local shop should take the initiative and start selling them?
