Liphook care shop
- Gloria (17th Oct 2018 - 14:15:09)

Has anyone else been put off going into the liphook care shop recently as the overpowering smell of dogs makes you want to vomit .Surely all the people who bother to donate there are as disgusted at the stink as much as I. It is like walking into a dog kennel and obviously all the clothes will have Eau de dog perfume impregnated !!

Re: Liphook care shop
- A.R (17th Oct 2018 - 14:29:52)

Gloria, what a rude comment you have made. I would imagine you have an axe to grind here. It is a charity shop, not Harrods. I expect a lot of the goods given here have come from homes with dogs in them.
Award for the most rudest and pointless post of the year.

Re: Liphook care shop
- P.R (17th Oct 2018 - 15:38:02)

I love the smell of my dog, warm, happy, generous being he is, far better than that of an unwashed human being !

Liphook Care is trying to benefit your community - think on ....

Re: Liphook care shop
- Bettie B (17th Oct 2018 - 18:26:05)

Sorry I've got to agree!!! Absolutely disgusting smell in there makes me want to vomit (I actually think I did a little in my mouth last time I entered)
Totally off putting.I know its meant to be raising money for a charity but the charity shop opposite gets my vote and donations 100%

Re: Liphook care shop
- Marcus (17th Oct 2018 - 18:49:27)

I have to totally agree with Gloria the dog smell in there is horrendous. I know it's a charity shop but is there really any need for it to smell so bad. Also a lot of people are allergic to dogs

Re: Liphook care shop
- Conrad (17th Oct 2018 - 19:49:22)

I wasnt going to mention this as I was a little embarrassed, however now gloria has raised this issue I thought I needed to air my grievance. I bought a new item last week for my house and when I got it home I noticed a strange smell, apon further investigation I came to the conclusion that it was dog related. I think a dog must of cocked its leg against it before I purchased it, needless to say, im devastated. Thankyou to gloria for giving me the confidence to get this off my chest.

Regards conrad.

I don't understand. Where is the doggy smell coming from? Is there a dog living in the shop?

Re: Liphook care shop
- Helen Rolf (18th Oct 2018 - 11:39:08)

Are we sure it is a dirty dog smell? Might be something else festering away under the floor. I know they used to have a bad problem with the drains in the area.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Dawn Hoskins (18th Oct 2018 - 11:41:56)

Hopefully, this will at least encourage people to go in and buy stuff - even if it is just be inquisitive about smelling the place.

I may go and check this out today armed with my grandads old gas mask!!!

Re: Liphook care shop
- Pb (18th Oct 2018 - 14:20:52)

Why don't you go in and voice your concerns instead of plastering bad things all over the Internet, I'm sure the ladies and gentlemen that work there would be more then happy to listen to you and see if they can find a solution. They may have a snell but they are still a charity shop and are still trying to do there best to help people in the community.
Just go and talk to them.

- Georgie (19th Oct 2018 - 19:22:14)

I won’t be going in there in a hurry I can’t tolerate the smell of dog Has anyone got to the bottom of this mystery yet I am intrigued

Re: Liphook care shop
- A.Ryan (19th Oct 2018 - 21:18:43)

No mystery, no dog smell. I went in there today , Absolutely no bad smell at all. It is a great charity shop at reasonable prices. Lovely staff, and I have been going in there for years. Well done to you all.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Alan b (19th Oct 2018 - 22:59:40)

The lady who works in there always has her dogs in there with her. It’s probably those that are making the place smell so rank

Re: Liphook care shop
- Freya (20th Oct 2018 - 10:11:41)

Do they not steam clean the clothes before they put them out for people to buy.
When I worked in a charity shop in Petersfield. We had to steam clean items of clothing before they where allowed to be put out for sale. It helps with the moth ball smell.
Clothes were only excepted if they had been washed first.

Mind you this was about 20 years ago. So things may have changed since then.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Fatima (21st Oct 2018 - 10:11:58)

I have to agree too. Popped in yesterday and yes definitely a doggy smell in there ... not nice at all

Re: Liphook care shop
- roo (22nd Oct 2018 - 10:04:34)

yet another keyboard warrior not brave enough to go and speak to the shop management. but come on here and slag the place off

Re: Liphook care shop
- A w (22nd Oct 2018 - 10:51:05)

I would just like to congratulate Gloria Bettie b Conrad Georgia and Fatima on their community spirit on slagging a charity shop off.The VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK THERE MUST BE WELL PLEASED THAT THEIR TIME IS APPRECIATED. Perhaps the named above would like to go and volunteer and find the source of the problem

Re: Liphook care shop
- Fatima (22nd Oct 2018 - 14:39:47)

No not slagging them off just speaking the truth. I think I will pass on working there the smell is bad enough on a brief visit let alone a job there ! Thanks anyway

Re: Liphook care shop
- Penny (22nd Oct 2018 - 15:01:05)

Fatima, have you or any of the other critics actually taken the time to go into the shop (albeit with a scented handkerchief) and talk to the volunteers? If you really cannot bear to go into the shop then email or phone on one of the following contacts taken from Google (I am sure you could have Googled this information if you feel this strongly, but I am saving you the trouble) info@blhcharity.co.uk – Tel: 01428 727211 – Head Office: 01420 477787. You can also write to them at

Penny where do I buy a hanky from in this day and age ? Oh I know the Charity shop that smells of dog !!!! I must go get one right away

Re: Liphook care shop
- roo (22nd Oct 2018 - 17:03:25)

perhaps someone had a dog in the shop just before you visited as i went there today and it didn’t smell of anything let alone a dog smell perhaps these critics could actually help the shop instead of criticising it. but heyho the keyboard warriors strike again

Re: Liphook care shop
- Ian (23rd Oct 2018 - 19:07:33)

My mum is 83 and works in there free of charge to give some thing back to village people should have respect for these people who give there free time

Re: Liphook care shop
- Jen (23rd Oct 2018 - 21:59:03)

The doggy smell seems to be an intermittent problem. Perhaps one of the volunteers brings their dog with them - hence it sometimes smells doggy and sometimes doesn't, depending on who is working in there at the time.

Some dogs, especially older ones, can be very stinky. Their owners love them and don't seem to notice the smell, but to other people it can be very unpleasant.
I think, ideally, it would be better if the dog could be kept in another room and not inside the actual shop.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Dawn Hoskins (25th Oct 2018 - 17:15:19)

I suppose it's like the smell that some smokers carry around with them. They seem oblivious to it and everything about them stinks.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Margaret Lawden (26th Oct 2018 - 11:49:01)

As a Trustee for the Bordon Liphook Haslemere Charity I was concerned to read that customers had been put off visiting our Liphook Care Shop due to unacceptable dog smells.

I therefore visited the shop and have to say that I found nothing untoward, certainly no emesis inducing odours! My main concern with posts criticising the shop in this way is that they could have a negative effect on footfall, both in terms of donations received and sales achieved, not to mention the effect on our staff and volunteers who give their time to benefit others.

The BLH Charity is a unique organisation providing financial support to individuals and community groups within a strictly limited geographical area around the respective towns. Since its inception in 1992, the charity has given grants which have amounted to over £1,000,000, primarily to families but also individuals and community groups.

For those in need, the BLH Charity has literally been a lifeline but, in order to provide the funds required, we need support from the local community who donate goods and make purchases from our shops.

I don’t want to enter into negative dialogue online – if you feel there is an issue with regards to odours, or indeed anything else, then please speak to staff/volunteers directly or call the office on 01420 477787; if you are more comfortable using your keyboard then please email info@blhcharity.co.uk.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Penny (26th Oct 2018 - 11:53:23)

Particularly to Bettie, Marcus, Conrad and Fatima – none of you have said if you have approached Liphook Care directly so I assume you have not. That would have been the courteous thing to do rather than write the rather unpleasant posts some of you have put on this Thread. I have been in Liphook Care twice in the last few days and on neither occasion could I detect the smell of dog. The second time I had some items to donate and took the opportunity to have a polite word with two of the volunteers. They said that they had never received a complaint and never noticed a smell of dog even when they opened the shop in the morning. They were very grateful to me for talking to them and said they would speak to their manager. It was so simple. Why didn’t one of you do that?

Re: Liphook care shop
- Mandi (26th Oct 2018 - 17:28:21)

Ive never smelt any dog smell in there either.i think these people who are moaning just want to jump on the band wagon .

Re: Liphook care shop
- Helen (26th Oct 2018 - 20:25:10)

Do you think the original poster may have had an ulterior motive for posting the comment? Maybe had a disagreement with the manager or someone else?

Re: Liphook care shop
- Penny (27th Oct 2018 - 09:58:38)

Yes I do Helen. Having been into the shop and spoken to the volunteers that is exactly what I think.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Penny (29th Oct 2018 - 14:49:06)

What a deafening silence there has been from the initiator of this Thread, Gloria and the Merry Band of followers, namely Betty, Marcus, Conrad, Georgie and Fatima. Says it all really. I sincerely hope that their posts, some of which were rather unpleasant and now it seems inaccurate, do not have a detrimental effect on Liphook Care and its staff. I have always found the staff who apart from the manager are all volunteers and give their free time for nothing, to be polite, pleasant, approachable and friendly. I know this is a free country but was it really necessary to start a Thread like this when the simplest thing to do was to politely speak to the volunteers in the first place?

Re: Liphook care shop
- Dawn Hoskins (30th Oct 2018 - 10:48:09)

Oh - how horrible.
No dog smells just people with an axe to grind with the volunteers?

We should all get a bag of stuff and take it in just in case they have suffered a loss of contributions as a result.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Linda (1st Nov 2018 - 15:09:30)

I have visited the shop twice in the past couple of weeks to drop off clothes and the ladies who were working there were lovely, very friendly. I can honestly say that I couldn't smell anything at all in there. Don't let other people's unkind remarks put you off going in there, you will receive a warm welcome.

Re: Liphook care shop
- Rachel (2nd Nov 2018 - 21:43:09)

I bought a pair of trousers in there today and all was well, no smell and the trousers smelt fresh!
