Small children riding bikes on public road
- Helen (9th Oct 2018  17:46:40)

Today there were many very small kids on bicycles riding in Paddock Way / Weylands Close . Why were there no parents or responsible adults supervising them when they are playing / riding on a public road. Surely a bit irresponsible and unsafe for children and drivers.

Was it the kids doing Bikeability?

They would have been supervised

Does Bikeability involve small kids screaming and shouting whilst riding on the wrong side/ middle of a public road ? With NO adults seen supervising anywhere. I think Helen was right to raise her safety concerns

It wasn’t bike ability kids, these kids are riding round dangerously towards cars on the wrong side of the road and zig zagging all over the place they have no road safety or knowledge and are going to cause an accident.

Probably kids from disfunctial families from the nearby estate! Bikeability is done in The Avenue area!

Offer to supervise? Offer to teach them road skills?

I think I saw this when I was driving and no adults about
When we take our child out on there bike we are always with our child.

I must admit people drive way to fast down our little roads they should be ashamed of themselves. Especially at the dead end bit at the bottom of the road where you cannot see anything as coming out round the bend and people tend to drive fast or deliberately put their foot down when they see a child on there bikes, disgusting.

I been wanting to write about this for ages. It's not the younger drivers it's the older ones that do that being they prob take a dislike for children playing out and disturbing the peace for them.

Please can we take care whilst driving down paddock, etc
It should be 30 mph or less for a reason not for only children playing but also I wanted to say that how many cars drive in the middle of the road as they are coming down the road which is Tunbridge crescent / the mead they fly down that road car drivers do and people try to cross the road or drivers tend to take up all the road forgetting it's a two car road where cars do go up cars go down at the same time because there's no lines road markings people tend to forget to stick to there side of the road something needs to be done there !

It's very dangerous I have been waiting to share my views on how many drivers do not stick to their side of the road and drive in the middle of it!

I'm hoping the children have lights on there bikes if playing out as gets dark quickly now and bike helmets is a must whilst riding bikes at any times.

To Residents
Whilst I understand your concern about people driving too fast, that is not actually the subject of this Thread. This Thread is about children riding their bikes dangerously and unsupervised on public roads.

However as you have deviated from the subject I cannot let two of your statements pass without comment. The first one and I quote “It's not the younger drivers it's the older ones that do that being they prob take a dislike for children playing out and disturbing the peace for them.” That generalisation was bad enough but your statement that and I quote “people tend to drive fast or deliberately put their foot down when they see a child on there bikes, disgusting.” I find this very hard to believe as if it were true it is absolutely horrible. If you have seen this then please take the numbers of the cars or a photo and report them to the police.

Penny I was totally in a rush writting I didn't mean to say the younger or older people I meant to put majority have been older drivers in there cars I had reported a couple to the police last year.
Tbh I'm not bothered about if it's older or younger drivers (all as bad as each other )
But yes We think next time I catch someone speeding up we will say something

And yes children need road sense /safety
I'm not debating they don't and yes this is about the children !

Weylands close paddock way is used as a playground for children on bikes and in general it’s a accident waiting to happen

I start doing the sign saying no cycles in liphook

The bottom line is parents in the area should be supervising their young kids. Especially when they are in groups riding bikes / running around playing games on what are public roads. Roads are NOT a playground. Kids should be using their back gardens or local parks and NOT playing in the road.

That’s harsh AJ , I love my bike .....maybe no small children in Liphook is an alternative??

Re: Small children riding bikes on public road

Isn't it the same on any estate road? The gardens are so small the children need to play outside and parents can't constantly be taking them to Radford Park or the Rec. I believe the children were of an age where you wouldn't expect a parent to be on 24 hour watch. It's bikes, scooters, skateboards, 20-20 in, playing football in the road. My children are past that stage now, but they did the same.

Shouldn't we, as adults, be the ones to be more responsible and take care when driving?

The roads mentioned are cul de sacs and the people using those roads should have in mind that amongst all the badly parked cars on the road and pavements, there are likely to be free range children and animals as well.

Having said that, if you see the children and think they are unsafe, why not have a gentle word with them and just point out the dangers and/or speak to the parents? I would have wanted to know if my children weren't taking notice of cars when out playing. Safety for everyone is the most important thing and we all play a part in that whether it be in the speed that we drive or where we "park" our cars.

I drove through The Avenue a couple of times on Tuesday and all the groups of children I saw were being supervised by adults.

Jay I wish there was a like button for your comment, children playing outside on quiet roads has been going on for a long long time, ok they do have to be careful but so do the drivers! Kids being kids & not stuck indoors on Xbox etc! Sounds like the good old days
