Iridium satellite or ...?
- John (23rd Jul 2018 - 00:50:04)

Good evening, lovely people of Liphook,

Did anyone else see that bright, orange in colour ,static "fireball" in the night sky, which slowly disappeared at around 3.25am???
Did I see my first Iridium satellite or it was something else?
Thank you in advance for your comments, much appreciated :)

No Iridium flares at that time last night .
It was more than likely a Perseid Meteor (debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle), as we approach the peak of the shower in a few weeks time . Not forgetting the Space Station is back in the evening skies & on Friday we have the Lunar Eclipse (it'll be rising during Totality though) - plenty to see :) #lookup

Too add....here's what an Iridium flare looks like facebook.com/astronicks/...

There's a useful app called Stellarium that let's you rewind & fast forward the night sky, if ever you wonder "what was that ?!" :)

Definitely not the ISS.

You can sign-up for emails telling you the time and direction of the ISS (when visible) for your location by visiting http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/
