Red Kite over the Bohunt Manor estate
- Liphook Community Magazine (18th Jun 2018 - 15:29:47)

We were pleased to see a Red Kite soaring over the Bohunt Manor estate this afternoon.

The Red Kite features on the front cover of the Liphook Community Magazine together with an article on page 37 of the Magazine.

The Magazine is hand delivered throughout the Parish and an Online version is available by clicking on Community Magazine on the blue tab to the left of this Post.

I too saw this majestic bird this morning.
Funnily enough I mentioned to my partner the fact that the community magazine featured this very bird on the front cover and showed him!

We have seen them on two or three occasions in recent weeks over the headley road. They are stunning creatures.

Interestingly enough, I read somewhere that they are have become something of a pest in the chilterns, where they were first re-introduced several years ago. And certainly if you drive out of Town on the M40 the sky is full of them. There is a view that they are bad for other species like cuckoos. Which would be such a shame if it is true.

Red Kites eat carrion, worms, and very occasionally small mammals - most cuckoos are on their way back to the African continent now and are sadly more likely to be shot on route.

The red kite was in this area last year as well as recently. Not sure if it’s the male or female, but it regularly gives wonderful
displays riding the thermals sometimes with the buzzards.

I too love watching these birds - kites & buzzards - and wonder at their fantastic eyesight. Often they are so high up - buzzards especially though I am not an expert - they must have fantastically good eyesight to spot what they are looking for on the ground.

I saw a cuckoo near Headley Road in 2008 but sadly not seen or heard since, such a shame.

Not too difficult to tell red kites and buzzards apart even from a distance as their profiles are different. A kite has a forked tail, a buzzard has a fan tail. Also the kite has narrower wings so looks more elegant. (Sorry buzzards!)

They are beautiful birds, they mainly feed on carrion but sad to see the remains of the smaller birds and mammals they have managed to hunt.
