The Anchor
- Bella (22nd May 2018 - 12:25:46)

I've heard a rumour that the Anchor pub is about to close down for a refurbishment!!!! Anyone know if this is true!! Noticed skips out the front this morning!!

Re: The Anchor
- Ann (22nd May 2018 - 12:56:40)

They were having a food delivery at 0730 hours this morning.

Re: The Anchor
- nick (22nd May 2018 - 18:04:17)

the answer is no they have already had a refurbishment
Best to ask at the pub for clarification

Re: The Anchor
- Fred (22nd May 2018 - 22:19:02)

Are you joking? When did they get it done, 1987?

Re: The Anchor
- Paula (23rd May 2018 - 16:57:17)

When i caught the bus to liphook, this morning, there was a huge skip, full up,to overflowing, at the left side of the Anchor.

This refurbishment story has been doing the rounds year on year for a few years now, sadly head offices perspective is that this location is reaping far too much cash week in week out for the same microwave food you could otherwise microwave at home for them to even dare interrupt the lorries of cash it collects. Seriously the place takes more cash than some premier league players do a week. Why would you interrupt that? If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it.
You can carbon date most of the place, carpets, tables, knives/forks/plates and some of the chicken and beef back to 1856. Rumour has it that at least a few of the empty glasses on the bar has been there since 1981 but they just never managed to collect them all and wash them each night and one of the toilets still has a log refusing to go down that supposedly belongs to George Best! The 3rd floor is officially condemned and out of bounds but as long as it does not collapse on the tills no one cares.
Why would head office throw £ XXXXX at it to do it up when doing so will lose them £ XXXXX a week whilst it’s happening when they already know the majority of people in Liphook will still attend and hand over our money at exactly the same rate without any renovation. It will remain patched up on life support for as long as possible.

I love your sense of humour, Jason. Total joy.

Re: The Anchor
- Rob (23rd May 2018 - 21:39:57)

Sadly too true, it could be a real destination b and b /Inn with nice food in a historic building set in lovely grounds. Instead it's a grotty place with sub standard beer and tasteless frozen then microwaved / deep fried food.

- Jan (24th May 2018 - 05:57:03)

Well said I totally agree rob make it more classy just full of down and outs give it a proper refurb make it a proper inn with rooms

Re: The Anchor
- Jan E (24th May 2018 - 14:31:26)

I remember the 1970's and 1980's when the anchor used to an oldie worlde pub where you could have a wonderful meal, steaks to die for, with great service from the staff, how things have changed.

Re: The Anchor
- Mandy (25th May 2018 - 06:26:23)

The outside needs doing

Re: The Anchor
- Annoyed local (25th May 2018 - 11:09:34)

I take Jan's comment as very rude and insulting quote full of down and outs,,, yes pub needs a spruce up but to say people who go in with families and those looking for a good value meal and this pub gives them that then don't be so rude as to insult them. You can find other pubs near bye that are more expensive and if that floats your boat then fine just accept not all can afford that. Remember we all have our budgets.

Re: The Anchor
- Mandy (26th May 2018 - 13:25:17)

Agree with last post its not full of down and outs theres some nice people in there how rude

Re: The Anchor
- Andrew (26th May 2018 - 16:35:33)

Its not "full" of down and outs, but it definitely has the highest ratio of down and outs for any pub near Liphook.
Hard fact is, when your the cheapest boozer in the area you will attract the cheapest clientele. Sure plenty of lovely families on a budget looking for a decent value meal attend, but they will stand amongst a higher proportion of down and outs than anywhere else.
Everyone is going off topic now, its not a very nice place, given the tens of thousands its pocketing every month it wouldn't hurt them to renovate and clean it up, but instead its nosediving.

Re: The Anchor
- oldie (26th May 2018 - 18:06:21)

On behalf of all those who may find themselves down, or even possibly out, I apologise on behalf of the snobs of Liphook.

As a very successful oldie, who has often been down and nearly out, I say you deserve a drink!

There are plenty of cool 'poshe ' pubs in and around Liphook but the Anchor seems to welcome anybody, in a sort of chilled out, affordable way, and if that's their marketing policy, good luck to them.

To all those who say it's a goldmine, asking, nay demanding, why don't they do it up and cut out the lesser classes, if you're sure why don't you club together and make an offer to buy it, like they did in Thursley, now a lovely, up market little pub and hardly a down or nearly out in sight!

Re: The Anchor
- Annoyed local (26th May 2018 - 19:45:14)

I am appalled that certain people of our village describe others as down and outs, frankly very sad. Even if pub was to get much needed upgrade I as a liphook person would still expect and welcome same clients I am old enough to remember these pubs welcoming all types on their Way home to grab pint and chat builder's coal men gardeners as well as office staff all mixed all shared a chat. Yes get pub tidied but stop your disgusting snob attitude please

Re: The Anchor
- John (26th May 2018 - 19:48:10)

Oldie, there is a massive difference between a failing pub in Thursley and the Anchor, the Anchor is hitting 5 digits a week, to buy the Anchor on business alone is a 1.5m min bill

Re: The Anchor
- Ian (28th May 2018 - 10:43:11)

In every way this pub is at the bottom of the food chain. Just horrible and a tragedy that this landmark building is in such a sorry state.

Re: The Anchor
- helen (28th May 2018 - 21:34:37)

Yes the 3 horseshoes in thursley is a lovely pub in a beautiful location, the food is great but there is a long wait for it as it is all cooked from scratch, I had a lovely panini, basically a hot sandwhich, with freshly
cooked triple cooked chips and salad, £10.00. Although the Anchor is very basic food it is at least catering for those who cannot afford the Deers Hut or 3 horsehoes. Horses for courses as they say!
