E.H.D.C Housing
- Freddie (11th Apr 2018 - 20:55:59)

I called the council this morning asking for advice to get a flat for my 21year old son and they advice that my son should carry on living with me as it can take years to find him a flat ? what is going on? . when I was about his age I got my first flat within months .

Perhaps they think that, at 21 years of age with no dependents, living at home with parents, he should be able to save the deposit to rent his own property rather than council tax payers subsidising his desired single/separate lifestyle.

Has he tried rightmove?

You need to put their name on the list when they reach 16 so that by the time they get to mid twenties (and perhaps have finished uni and wish to return to Hants) their name is higher up the list. They still might not be a priority unless you make them homeless though or that living with parents is detrimental to their mental health - there is a list of reasons on the EHDC website as to why they would fall into which priority group. Even the size of their bedroom counts -if it is less than a certain size they might move up the list of priorities.

Why the sense of entitlement for tax-payers money? Time have moved on...

- Debbie (12th Apr 2018 - 08:57:08)

I agree with Dollypops and Lips.

People need to lean to pay their way, the rest of us have to, and we don't want to be subsidising your off-spring, who, incidentally, you chose to bring into the world. Therefore, you have a responsibility to either continue to support your child, or ensure they can support themselves.

It is not the job of the hard working tax payer to pick up the pieces.

I don't even know why you would think this possible this day and age?the council won't even entertain my daughter and partner and they have a baby! Most people have to private rent!

I do agree that there are people who milk the welfare state and there is a culture of entitlement in the UK with too many people who feel the state owes them a living. However we do not know the circumstances of the individual in the original post and there are clearly members of the community that need support, understanding and housing.

The welfare state needs discussion and a radical overall and social media forums are good to debate in general terms. However I think specific individual cases probably are not best debated online

This site is full of lynch mobs and people who spend too much time reading the Daily Mail
How do you know that the posters son is not a tax payer himself?

Your heads of full of stereotypical ideas about those of us who live in Social housing. Some of us do work you know !!! and have found ourselves in need of housing due to unfortunate circumstance.
We're not all scroungers!

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Lips (12th Apr 2018 - 13:49:06)

Ian, in general I agree with you that some cases deserve help, hence my entry was in the form of a question.

But 'deserve' should go both ways.

I do NOT believe in claiming benefit under shrouds of discretion / secrecy to "protect one's dignity/privacy". If one's circumstance is quite so dire that they have decided to claim other peoples' money then those who pay deserve to know, deserve to question even if intrusively. I support entitlement over OVERT AND FAIR merit. If it's public money they claim, then it's the Publics' right to know. No blind payments, people are just not honest enough for that. We don't ask as a form of gossip, we ask to protect our money so that we do have for those who really deserve.

Hi,
I went on the council list when I was 15, had to bid for 5 years. I eventually got a place! Im now 21! It’s not easy. You need to apply on Hampshire Home choice and bid every week!

Good luck

- Lips (12th Apr 2018 - 17:04:27)

So tax-payers' money is all a game now: "not easy", "good luck" ?!?!
"found ourselves in need"? Find yourself a sponsor or own way out of the needing.

Those who do work yet awarded social housing deserve a prise for it?!? What about the rest who work, pay tax AND pay for own private housing?

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Anon (12th Apr 2018 - 19:26:33)

What a hard nosed person you are Lips .

I "found myself in need" when my husband & father to our 3 children died . I took on a few night shifts as well as my day job (almost killed me!!) to try to pay the mortgage and bills . Would you have expected me to work 24 hours a day Lips ?????

Ended up homeless yet still carried on with my job . So yes , I praise myself everyday!! I hope you never have to experience what we have as a family.

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Lips (12th Apr 2018 - 19:51:10)

The choice to become a parent should be a serious one. Provisions can and should be made for the worse eventualities that do not rely on public funds. My husband and I pay dearly for such services all our adult lives. Spending elsewhere instead of provisioning is also a choice.
The freedom to make own choices should come with with taking own responsibilities.

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Dollypops (12th Apr 2018 - 22:39:12)

Anon, you are the family who absolutely should benefit from assistance in every way and exactly why the welfare state was set up - for those who, through no fault of their own, fall on hard times for some reason.

The people who consider it their right to be housed and supported by the state for no particular reason, just deprive those who really need it.

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Jay (17th Apr 2018 - 18:15:21)

Reading this debate with interest and saddened to head Anon's story.

Like many others I pay tax, have a mortgage and children. However, I have taken additional precautions to ensure that my wife and children can be provided for in the event of anything happening to me. Most anyone can get life and critical illness insurance so you can plan for lifes unknowns.

I have just chosen to pay the premiums out of my own pocket rather than rely on the welfare of the state.

As Lips suggests, provisions can and should be made for the worse eventualities that do not rely on public funds.

Re: E.H.D.C Housing
- Lou (18th Apr 2018 - 18:57:26)

Lips!

No it’s not bloody easy! I work full time and still managed to get myself a council flat! I don’t claim any benefits I pay everything myself. Yes good luck... I wished the bloody boy good luck!

I agree Anon,...it is so easy for some to stand in "judgement "! of other's,
without knowing the full story and circumstances ,..good to be open minded, and to see the full picture, ...some are so blinkered! .

In an ideal world we'd all have a well paid job and insurances to cover our life, health, etc plus savings for our children's university on top of a mortgage and a nice holiday every year but unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world. 2 examples, a friend of mine works 60 hours a week on minimum wage but as a single mum to a teenager she sometimes struggles to pay the bills. Another friend of mine works in banking and is on around £40,000 a year but still can't afford a mortgage locally because house prices are sky high.
