Liphook Youth club - have your say!
- Jenny Hanson (19th May 2015 - 13:34:46)

There is a meeting tonight at 7pm at the Millennium Centre to talk about the future of Liphook Youth club.

The current committee and anyone else interested will have a chance to discuss the future of the youth club or other youth provision for the young people of Liphook.

Under Youth Provision

1. Remove the present Skate park and cover that area with grass as its now a sharp edged bent lump of metal injury waiting to happen due to vandals smashing shopping trolleys on it (most nights of the week) as well as being generally in a very poor state of repair.

2. Consider a new concrete (less noise) skate park but only on condition it has CCTV covering the whole site so that when nearby residents do complain about the anti-social non-skating behaviour (most nights a week) and the police are called then the police have something to prove whom smashed the glass (Most nights a week) or was under aged drinking (most night a week) keeping children up past 11pm (most nights a week) using foul language (Most nights a week)

No CCTV no new Skate park

Now cue the cries "oh the children" or "we were all young once" or "stop being negative" etc etc etc etc…. If you don’t live within 200metres of it then you have absolutely NO idea how bad it actually is

PRESS STATEMENT

Does Liphook need a Youth Club?

Liphook Youth Club was formed in 2009, as a result of a Police Dispersal Order, to work with young people in the village, eventually meeting every Monday evening in the Millennium Centre, with additional outreach work in the local area. It provides a safe and friendly location for local young people to meet and build friendships. Many of the Youth Club’s members are dealing with challenging situations in their lives and the club offers them a non-threatening environment where they can meet their friends and have access to high quality advice and support on a wide range of topics.

The Youth Club has been supported by Hampshire County Council (HCC), East Hampshire District Council and Bramshott and Liphook Parish Council over this period and it has been very successful in helping the young people and reducing the burden on local policing.

Earlier this year the County Council stopped providing its substantial funding for the Youth Club along with other youth work in the county and this has had a significant impact upon the club’s ability to continue. Youth Club sessions have had to be cut back considerably and outreach work suspended, although the aim is to revert back to the previous levels as quickly as possible.

The Youth Club urgently needs to find new sources of funding from grants etc (the annual operating cost is about £12,500). Most importantly, the Management Committee’s membership and the number of Youth Club volunteers have dwindled over the years making it almost impossible to continue.

The club is at a crucial crossroads - requiring new funding, but most critically, more committee members and youth work volunteers. Specifically the Committee needs to replace the Treasurer and the Secretary and to appoint a Fundraiser – these roles do not need to attend the actual youth club meetings. Training for any new volunteers will be provided free of charge.

The current committee has therefore decided to call an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday 19th May at 7.00pm in the Millennium Centre to discuss the future of the Liphook Youth Club.

The questions before the meeting will be “Does Liphook need a Youth Club?” and “Do we have sufficient support to provide a Youth Club?” Any members of the community who have views on this matter are urged to attend this meeting.

Anybody interested in helping Liphook Youth Club as a volunteer or as a member of the Management Committee should contact the Committee’s Chairman, Dr John Tough on 01428-724492 or johntough@johntough.co.uk.
