Is Liphook a good place to live in future years?
- paul (9th Mar 2015 - 16:42:10)
Hi,
Many towns and villages have been given awards for best places to live, do we think Liphook should be considered?
If you were to move to the village for the first time does it not need to bring itself into the 21st century?
Run down shops and areas, few attractions and amenities.
Can we, as experienced residents, do better for our area where we live?

Having worked locally for many years, Liphook was never in my top 10 places to live. However, that all changed when we found our dream home and moved in 2 years ago. Whilst there are some areas which are run down, generally Liphook has a lot to offer, I love it and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
The problem is Liphook needs to find its niche - maybe as a gateway to the South Downs, because without people (whether visitors or residents) the village will stagnate, so we will need something (development??) to support our long term aspirations.
There is also a need to get beyond the apathy that many residents have and get some greater engagement in the village. Whilst there is a lot of love for the carnival and similar things, there is no support to organise and those who do find it increasingly difficult each year. Also I find it disheartening to see such criticism (on here mainly) for those who do step up to try and do something good for the village.
So what do we need? People to take an active role in where they live, Liphook to find its place locally and maybe an acceptance that newbies to the town can positively contribute to its long term success.

Liphook is a great place to live and bring up kids because it's relatively small, manageable size and surrounded by great countryside, people feel attached to it.
If you disagree, why are you here and not in Guildford, Portsmouth or even London, all fascinating places in their own right, much more going on, but let's not turn Liphook into yet another sprawling clone of theirs. I know some people might say "but it's boring", so move..
As for community, that's really hard to define in 21st century Britain, but there are plenty of events happening here and locally.
I agree with the original poster, we need joined up thinking and feedback to see what Liphook needs, the problem is that there's no money for it, the developers are really only interested in selling houses. How do you address that?
I'd like to see a bypass to the Square, maybe a pedestrianised zone with cafes and small shops, parking, a swimming pool, a cinema, but none of that is even on the horizon! I'm not sure what else anyone wants, maybe nightlife? But Liphook isn't a bar and club, late night drinking sort of place, so what else?
The Bohunt site seems to be about the best thing on offer, but we're totally reliant on a foreign building contractor to deliver let's face it, even Sainsbury's didn't fulfill it's promise.

As someone has said, if you don't like Liphook why live here? Perhaps it is better to move elsewhere rather than imposing more development to 'meet our aspirations'. There are few (one?) empty shops and Liphook is certainly not run down.
There is plenty to get involved in if you are interested enough. However if you are the sort of person who cannot live without cinemas, public swimming pools on the doorstep and extensive nightlife perhaps Liphook is not for you.

Surely, the best place to live is where you are happiest? there are some wondeful places to live in the uk, some like country, others coast, or a bustling town. It's unfair to move to a place and then try and change it.

i have found that people move here because of Bohunt school, still drive their children to school. The railway is also convenient for commuters, there is countryside around them, (less and less now), and the proximity of the A3.
In this age of big retailers and internet shopping, high rents for shops, it would be foolish to expect to turn it into Haslemere, which has a very elderly affluent population, like Grayshott.
Even Haslemere shops close and are replaced by charity shops. The square also has no available space for another car park. If you want to live in Haslemere, buy a house there!

Paul,
Fantastic schools, lovely walks, 2 golf courses, 2 health spa's, good pubs and restaurants, takeaways, excellent amenities including doctors surgeries, opticians, dentists and vets, shops that cater for most day to day needs, easy access to the A3, railway station.
Great community events such as Carnival, Liphook in bloom, open gardens in Bramshott, annual LIBDA bike ride,
Haslemere 5 minutes away, Petersfield 10 minutes away, Guildford 30 minutes away, The Coast 35 minutes away, 1 hour from London. South Downs National Park on our doorstep, hundreds of acres of National Trust land surrounding us.
Nice people!!
I FEEL VERY LUCKY TO LIVE IN LIPHOOK THANK YOU.

As someone who does not own a car, I still find that Liphook has everything that I need!
If there was something in particular that I needed and could not find in Liphook (very rare) then I can always pop on the bus or train and travel to the next village to find it!
I must say though, that Liphook has just about everything I need and it does me good to walk around the village to each shop to acquire whatever I might need.
I like our village and it will be a sad day when it becomes a town!

Village ? Town ? Who cares how we map to a random definition ! Maybe we should build a cathedral on Bohunt Manor !? Turn into a city in an instant.
What I do know is that moving here was the best decision I ever made and I have met some fantastic people, many I hope will be friends for life ...
But we do need a McDonalds ! And a jazz bar ! And a South African butcher ! And for Ben at the Riser to buy the Green Dragon ! And a couple more hairdressers ! And a bypass through the bowling green and tennis courts ! And a rugby club ! And for Fabulisss to return ! And volunteers to help the carnival to continue for another 100 years !...
"We can each define ambition and progress for ourselves. The goal is to work toward a world where expectations are not set by the stereotypes that hold us back, but by our personal passion, talents and interests"
-Sheryl Sandberg
Or
"Our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us ..."
-Liphook Parish Council (or could have been Oscar Wilde, I forget).
You choose (see what I've done there ...)
Cheers, Finchie
PS the astute amongst you will realise there a few "tongue-in-cheek" references in my list. The serious one is the carnival and volunteers - just to be clear !!!! Maybe the Fabulisss one too ....

I recently moved to liphook, I spent a lot time here when I was little as my grandparents lived here before moving to milland.. I wasn't so pleased about moving here but now me and my son have made new friends I'm really enjoying it. Everyone is just around the corner and the baby/toddler groups are fantastic too.
I do wish we had a little more here such as a swimming pool though

Hi having moved into the village in July 14 from Guildford which is a very busy place. It makes you appreciate less traffic and a more relaxing way of life. There are opportunities to get involved in village life here and have noticed the people are friendly. It would be a shame to over develop liphook and if people want McDonalds, wine bars, swimming pools then maybe they should travel to the nearby towns where they are available. Let\'s support our local businesses. As this is important in order for them to survive.

If you feel there is room for improvements to Liphook why not add your comments to the Parish Plan at www.liphookplan.co.uk
Your Steering Group is currently looking at how the community's wishes, derived from the Exhibition, can be turned into an Action Plan. Any suggestions on how, when and by whom along with the resources required would be greatly appreciated.

I've lived in Liphook since 1981, and my Son has grown up here, my late Mother has also lived here, and my late Father was a Liphook lad during the 1920s-30s, there have been many changes, some good, some not so good. This is my home and I would not change Liphook for the world.
