Unsolicited e-mails
- Paul Robinson (2nd Mar 2015 - 18:35:49)
Is it me or has the internet gone mad in the last couple of days?
Today I have just deleted 55 unsolicited e-mails from my system and that does not include 20 or so more that my spam guard has immediately placed in my trash bin.
I have in the past, like most people I suppose, received two or three a day but this is getting ridiculous!
The problem is that I suspect none of them are what they purport to be. Far from being a discount voucher from Asda, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Halfords et al or an introduction to an Asian / Russian / Mexican babe (take your pick) or a credit card / credit check, Anglian windows, Anglian Scrappage. . . they all have one thing in common, the money value starts with\' A\'£ could this be Australian? Austrian? Is this what is known as phishing?
How can I sort this out?

We too seem to be having lots of these e mails. Not as many as you but a lot more than what you would call normal.

Paul
Phishing is when someone sends you spam that looks like it's from your bank or credit card company (or recently HMRC), trying to get you to enter your personal bank details so they can then fraudulently remove money from your account.
As regards the \A\£, this is just poorly formatted html and not an indicator of anything else.
Hope that helps

Is this a record?
This morning I opened my e-mails to discover forty two new messages of which thirty nine of them were identical offers of a shopping voucher from Morrisons Supermarket in return for completing a survey.
Each one was posted on or around 3.00am in the morning at edxactly 2 minute intervals.
Am I to assume that Morrisons are really desparate for my opinion or that a disaffected 'spammer' is working out his notice!

Just spam Paul and almost certainly nothing to do with Morrisons. I recently had over 100 emails delivered to my work email address in a 40 minute span allegedly from a pharmacy saying a prescription was ready.
Generally there will be a zip file attached that has some malicious software embedded although more recently these can be found in other file attachments as well so although its a bit of a drag, the advice to not open any emails unless you are absolutely sure of who they are from, is very sensible.
