If your newspaper is late this week, it is because..
- David Shillabeer. (28th Mar 2009 - 20:03:04)
I am a paper boy aged 14 and deliver newspapers in Liphook every morning from 6.30.
Today, Saturday, my nice red bike ( which I use to deliver the papers ) was stolen from the bicycle rack at Liphook Train Station between 11 am and 6pm.
Can you help? Did you see anyone with a red mountain bike with thick black tyres?
If so please let me know or the police.
regards from a now walking paper boy.

If you post the name of the shop where you work I am happy to drop in a donation towards the cost of replacing your bike.
Despite the fact that the majority of the crimes in the village seem to be committed around the station area there has been little evidence of, or at least information about, any effective action taken to mitigate the problem.
If either Streetwatch (SW), or even the police (who knows?!) took a stroll past the station occasionally we may find that the perpetrators of car break ins, other assorted thefts and serious beatings think twice before unleashing their antisocial tendencies upon the rest of us.
Like many others I have no problem with the concept of SW but, with the best will in the world, they are untrained in restraint, unskilled in negotiation with drunks or violent individuals and, with limited volunteers, unable to be everywhere.
This last point is not aimed at the laudable efforts of all who take part in SW - they are trying to help and I commend that. They do not, however, stand a chance against those who are prepared to commit violence against others or to steal or destroy property.
Even if the police were able to react immediately to an emergency call it is unlikely that the culprits would still be around and I have already mentioned that the chances of SW detaining anyone against their will are minimal. I do appreciate their possible deterrent value and also the fact that they may be able to help with identification.
These are not intended to be unhelpful criticisms but realistic comments about a volunteer force who may not realise just what they are up against.
I have no idea where the answers may lie. After all, if it is beyond the wit of Parliament to come up with solutions then we must try various solutions before perhaps finding something that works around here. I would be interested in attending the inaugural meeting of LaBIC when that happens.
In the meantime let's get that paperboy back on the road!

Hello David
I'm sorry to hear your bike was stolen, that's a nasty and pointless crime to suffer.
You haven't mentioned if the bike was secured, or how the thieves managed to break any locks / security chains? I'm wondering if your bike was an opportunistic 'steal' or if more bikes were taken at the same time?
Also, as we don't know about your personal circumstances (e.g. is the bike covered on insurance) I am not sure what your thoughts are about getting a replacement via donations as has been suggested here already?
However, I too would be more than willing to assist in one of two ways if you don't get back in the saddle promptly. I have a spare mountain-bike in excellent condition that you are more than welcome to borrow / take, or alternatively if you'd rather buy new it would be useful to know that decision plus the details of the newsagent so that soemthing could be sorted out.
I hope it gets sorted for you, but if not please do let us know?

I don not have any informationa about your stolen bike, however, I have a mountain bike I would be happy for you to have for FREE, it was dumped outside my house in Jan 09 and I now own it as no-one claimed it from the police.
If it would help you out you are welcome to it, the rear tyre needs looking at it but other than that seems in faorly good order.
If it is of no use to you and someone else would like to relief me of it then please call me and maybe we could arrange something!!
If it goes to another party then may I suggest a charitable donation?

Dear every one who replied to my request.......
Thankyou so much for your really kind offers. My Mum is really 'touched' ( apparently ). My parents have lent me the money and we bought a bike today. It's not as nice as my red one but it will do until I can save up again...for a decent one as I had before. I am not allowed to accept donations but thankyou very much.
What I really want is for the person who took my bike to return it, becasue it was my pride and joy. i really don't understand why people have the slyness to steal from someone.
Again, if anyone sees a red mountain bike I would be really grateful if they could let me know.
The police gave me a ref number and I have told them that the bike rack at the station has a CCTV on it so hopefully they can find out who took it.
